Well, we had a bigger turnout this time! A 66% increase over last week’s attendance. pldennison and Montfort showed up, bringing this week’s total to 5. We’re growing!
We all hung out at Loeb’s Deli for sandwiches and the conversation wandered all over the place, as usual. I lost the tip of my pinky in a soda can but SqrlCub sewed it back on, so I can still use the right shift key with no problem.
We all got an international greeting from Anniz via Montfort’s cell phone e-mail. I got plenty of trashing for not going to RTFirefly’s Halloween party on Sunday. Gosh, if I’d have known about this last year I would have gotten married after my birthday.
SqrlCub suggested we make this a semi-regular kind of thing and I’m all for it! We figure out how often we want to do this and we’ll warn the rest of you DC Dopers so you can make plans.
That’s all I can think of for now - will let the others check in and add to it.
DAMN! I thought of doing this (saying ‘hi’ to y’all via PLD’s cellphone) to up the number of DC Dopers participating, and then decided not too…<poodoo>
Oh, by the way, Montfort, if I came across as too brusque about you and Anniz I really apologize. I’m happy for the both of you, but also jealous that you’re hanging with a Swedish woman. Some guys get all the luck!
As his first year wedding anniversary present, Olentzero requested, and got, a kiss on the cheek from Sqrlcub.
Maybe for next year’s present, Falcon will help you change.
Falcon, if you come, I’ll bring the good tequila! As you know, alcohol is the source of – and answer to – all of life’s problems.
I thought the best thing about lunch was that nobody ordered the tongue sandwich. And it was fun to hear Sqrl and Olentzero discussing how to say “I like coffee” in Welsh.

Montfort, I realized I have one of those Steven Pinker books I mentioned to you, “Words & Rules.” I’ll bring it to RT’s, if you want to borrow it.
P.S. I already know this is a double post. I tried to stop it, but it was too late.
As for you, Montfort, I never did get to recommend which titles I thought would be good for learning Swedish, if you’re so inclined. If you still wanna hear it, let me know.
Ah, grasshoppa, this is indeed an auspicious beginning. You have chosen wisely. I have this very book myself.
I’ve always recommended the “Teach Yourself” series. They’re very, very good. Although I think it would be worth your while to cough up for a better dictionary, if you’re going to go with more than a tourist’s knowledge of Swedish. PRISMA puts out an abridged dictionary (its full dictionary is two volumes) that I find most useful.
Back when I was trying to learn Czech, I got the Teach Yourself Czech book, and I learned a lot (well, enough to make sure I survived a week in Prague and didn’t eat anything non-vegetarian).
I know I need a better dictionary; sometimes Anniz and I have a little trouble talking because her English isn’t 100% fluent yet. I’m not really pleased with the dictionaries I’ve found here in the States, simply because there are so few of them to choose from.
When I’m in Stockholm, I intend to go dictionary shopping there.
