Does anybody know any truck drivers? If these signs are out there, they’re the people who would know. If you know someone who’s been a truck driver for years, they could probably also tell us how long these signs have been around. I’m tempted to drive out to the nearest truck stop and start asking around, but I’m scared that someone will misunderstand and think that I’m the DEA and freak out on me for taunting them about choking off the drug supply!
I now have four different friends that I asked who say they’ve seen these signs with their own eyes. They all give the same description of an all black sign with white lettering that says “Do you think it’s dry now wait until…” From there, different accounts are “next month” “next year” and “November”. A few said that there was a large green marijuana leaf against the black background, so that might explain why it wasn’t noticed by all viewers.
As I’ve said up-thread, I believe these signs exist. I remember seeing a similar sign from 6 to 12 months ago, so my memory is obviously hazy. Also, I don’t think it’s far-fetched to believe that the DEA or some other agency would put up a sign like this.
I suspect that they put up these signs whenever there has been a big bust in the area. The bigger the bust, the more asset-forfeitures, the more signs. That way the money doesn’t come out of their budget. The government also currently has a deal with advertisers of all types where the government pays for one anti-drug ad and the advertiser matches it with a free ad. This is a good deal for advertisers, since they get to play the commercials or put up the signs etc. whenever they have an empty slot.
BTW, I understand that some people get all worked-up when they don’t believe something is true, but they can’t prove a negative. I understand that the burden of proof is on the people who claim something to be true. Obviously, until there’s definitive proof either way, everything ANYONE says is either unverified personal observations, hearsay, or speculation. That said, let’s all try to keep an open and logical mind as we discuss the issue.
Achernar: Good effort on calling the DEA (you wouldn’t have caught me doing that!) but I’m not convinced that the person you talked to knew what the heck you were talking about. They probably just wanted to get you off the phone like any other government agency that you call. Thanks for the effort though!
BTW, this is what I asked my friends, all of whom Itrust:
“Was it you that told me about that billboard from the DEA about marijuana being “dry?”” (I still can’t remember who it was who recently told me about seeing one right before I read this thread)
They would all say no, they weren’t the one who told me recently, but they ALL had seen these signs with their own eyes within the past year or so. I asked them all to tell me what the sign said and they all told me exactly the same thing with minor differences. (see above)
These are people I trust. None of them said anything about “hearing about” a sign like this, they were all very clear and very sure that they had seen this sign with their own eyes. I know that doesn’t mean anything to anybody else, but that, along with my own vague recollection, convinces me 99.99%
The other .01% will come when there is definitive proof…
FWIW, I think some of the recent, vaguely Biblical signage I’ve seen might be causing folks to “remember” seeing these signs. Most of these are white lettering on a black background. Many of them have a preachy moral standpoint.
In fact, I bet this is the sign people are misremembering:
"If you think it’s hot now, just wait.
--God"
Very similar wording, same design, and I’ve actually seen these up on Route 8 in CT, over this past summer. Anyone care to ask those who’ve claimed sightings if this is what they’re thinking of?
Yeah, but I’ve heard accounts of people saying that they’d seen the “If You Think It’s Dry Now Wait Till _______.” for over ten years now, which is longer than the billboards “from God” have been around.
It does no good trying to pound it into a knucklehead, but I’ve also seen a similar sign as is being discussed here on southbound I-75 in Detroit in September. It said: “If you think it’s dry now, wait until October.” My best friend also saw it.
You’ve got the knucklehead part backwards. If you’ve seen the sign, and even know exactly where it’s located, then why don’t you go take a picture and prove it? I personally think it’s a load of crap until I see proof. That’s not knuckleheaded.
This story is complete and utter bs. I spent 2 whole days trying to track down and take a picture of one of the 3 signs that was supposedly in the Rockford, IL area. They simply were not there. How about this? If you’re claiming to have seen one of these signs, post up an exact location, please. Make it more specific than I saw it on 35W or it’s downtown, near the police station. Maybe then someone can get a picture. Not that it’s going to happen, but stranger things have occurred.
Disruptive Entity!!! Welcome to the boards! Good to have another to add to our Teeming!
I too have heard rumors of these billboards. I heard there was one near the Ohio/Michigan border on 75. I heard there was one in Downtown Toledo itself, but I’ll be bebillydammed if I can find it.
Our billboards however, have been attributed to someone who was running for some type of public office. Don’t you just love a creative mind?
My thought when I heard this stuff was that is was BS to begin with. If it was true, it seemed to me that the DEA sure was taking alot of credit for our bad drought. Damn thems some mighty powerfull Feds. We better watch out for them, they might just ruin next years crop with no rain too.
Maybe these mysterious billboards are actually public service announcements by the Department of Environmental Awareness warning about upcoming droughts.
Okay, quick recap here. Supposed locations of these mythical signs specifically mentioned in this thread:
SW Ohio
Detroit (mentioned twice)
I95 near Philly
I95 near DC
University Ave in Lafayette, LA
South Florida
45 near Houston
35W in Minnesota
The Ohio/Michigan border on 75
Downtown Toledo
Rockford, IL
All of these diverse places and not one picture yet? Come on, I can find a picture of a quadrapelegic midget lesbian sucking off a raccoon in a sombrero in less than a minute on the net.
If these signs were for real, they would be part of a major DEA campaign, no? Especially in all of the locations noted. Well their website, http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/ has no mention of it at all. Lots of news on other anti-drug campaigns, but none on these signs. Better yet, try this link http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/pressrel/marijuana_index.html
It specifically deals with marijuana related news releases. Magically, no mention of it there either and they go back to 4/19/95.
Alright true believers, explain why no one who has set out to photograph one of these elusive signs has found one. Are we just too stupid? Wait, maybe the signs have chameleonic powers. You know, when they’re in danger of being photographed they can change colors in order to better blend into their surroundings. Almost 2 months later, it’s time to put up or shut up.
p.s.- Thanks for the greets telcontarstorm.
I cannot believe there are people that still think these things exist. Poor Justin. I mean, honestly. Every page you visit, someone says, “Well, I checked out where one was suppoed to be in downtown XXXX and couldn’t find it, but they’re really supposed to be all over in XXXX.”
