My home made sauerkraut isn’t as aggressively sour as the store bought kind. It goes quite nicely with a lot of things. But I get that some folks just don’t like it. I was brought up with sauerkraut, ate it several times a week in some fashion or another. My grandma made sauerkraut and mashed potato filled pierogies, smothered in fried onions and butter. To die for!
If’n I do it right with enough butter under the skin it’ll get me some good turkey gravy.
Still need a freezer-beer update, butters! I’m hoping there was no 'splosion.
I hope it gets some ‘Funny’ votes from the Yelpsters.
Up from naptime. I made Asian BBQ stirfry with ‘shrooms and asparagus. I had a Sazarac earlier. Now I’m having a beer, and pondering Butters’ freezer.
I did two. Work clothes, and my black comforter(I alternate between black and red). Other than that very sloth-y day, apart from working for 12 hours.
Sweet. that’ll keep you going till I win the lottery, and hire you to build me a home bar.
N.C. State played yesterday, and beat our rival. Also, Canes won the hockey for once.
Flyboy, just wow. And I thought I had it bad when the hotel in L.A. put me in someone else’s room.
Glad you’re felling better, shoe.
Got out at quarter to two, which is excellent time for a Saturday close. Starving but almost too exhausted to eat.
Came home to a suspiciously chilly house. After a moment of wondering just how far behind on my gas bill I might be, I remembered that I switched the heat off when I let Monkey out this afternoon, since it was a relatively warm mid-50s.
Whoops.
I tossed Monkey a few treats to take the edge off his energy. Now imma go crash for as long as possible.
I’ve got leftover mashed potatoes, can buy decent sauerkraut (advantage of living in Switzerland) and am now wondering how difficult it is to make pierogies, or if there’s a decent cheat. Probably shouldn’t - I would end up having to eat all of them on my own. Might go ahead and saute some onions and then make some mashed potato pancakes. Hubby’s not a big fan of onions, so I’ll have to eat them on my own.
After a day of loafing and cleaning, we’ll follow with another day of the same. Today the new windows will get washed, and the floors will get scrubbed. This means that Christmas break will not be full of deep cleaning tasks.
My Ohioan relatives aren’t too happy this morning. Except one of my cousins who seems to be a Michigan fan. He likes to live dangerously.
Gotta clean the windows before the sun shines in, so gotta hurry.
Happy Sunday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis < snerk > 69! < snerk > Amurrkin out and rainy(ish) with a predicted high of 71 and cloudy for the day. The rain should be leavin’ us within the hour accordin’ to TWPTB. We shal see. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization. I have Verger duty this mornin’. We shall follow that with a McN.O.L. and then back to da cave for nappage and general sloth the rest of the day.
Boo glad your team won yestiddy. Here’s hopin’ for a better season next year. Next up for my Dawgs is the SEC championship game next Sattidy.
FlyBoy good review/rant! Sorry the hotel was so sucky, however.
MetalMouse have a safe trip home.
VanGo yay on the new/potential gig! Sounds like a real good thing for you.
Morty enjoy the sauerkraut. The only way I can eat sauerkraut is in a Reuben sammich.
Butters we are all concerned about the potential exploded beers. Please update us. We worry.
shoe rest well and don’t forget to eat.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, purtification for deheathenization must commence.
Happy Sunday Y’all!
Good idea - thanks!
It’s been eons since I made any, mainly because it’s labor-intensive and messy. Flour everywhere!! And apart from the mess, I always eat too many - they’re sooooo good! My grandmother’s recipe includes mint in the potatoes. FCD doesn’t like it, the heathen!! So that’s another reason I don’t make them any more. Dammit. Oddly enough, my grandmother only made the potato-filled pierogi. I’ve never had them with sauerkraut. I understand some people also make fruit-filled versions, which sounds interesting.
We received and assembled a gift for Tobias - now I need to figure out how to wrap it for him. I also got him this because you can’t have too many small pieces all over the carpet! Roxy’s getting the spirograph for littles, some drawing pads, and this from an indulgent grandpa.
We were making our Christmas plans yesterday. SIL’s mom will be going to Alabama, so that makes our scheduling easier. We’ll host a Christmas Eve brunch so the in-laws can watch the kids open their gifts. Daughter’s house is too small, else we’d have done it there, plus there’s no way FIL could get in there unless someone carried him (steps, yanno…) Anyway, I guess I need to set up my little tree.
Then on Christmas Day, we’ll go to my bro’s (in Baltimore) for the usual insanity with my side of the family. We’ll do the white elephant goofy gift exchange and eat too much, as usual. I’ve already been directed to make the deviled eggs, including the Bloody Mary deviled eggs that my sister lurves. Looks like all I need to do is work out the brunch menu.
I have some mushy 'nanners, so I’m thinking I’ll bake some 'nanner bread today. Or muffins - they’re easier for the in-laws to manage. It’s supposed to start raining any time now - good excuse to hibernate! I do have to empty the dishwasher and start refilling it, but mostly it’ll be a day of chillage. I hope.
Happy Sunday!!
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. It’s raining. I see a nap after cleaning and handegg(or perhaps during the 3rd quarter, the way the Panthers have been playing).
I’ve made those. They’re da bomb.
Butters, have you checked your freezer for beer this morning?
morty, as Mooooom said earlier, pierogi are very labor intensive to make (like anything stuffed). I’ve never made them with kraut (I usually go with potato and cheese, mushroom or pork filling). My grandmother always kept a crock or two of kraut going. I’m not really big on it, but most of Dad’s family love the stuff.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. We’re supposed to continue the rain on and off all day, so it will be an indoor, Cat in the Hat kind of day.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Even though I bought and roasted a small, boneless leg of lamb on Thanksgiving day, we had quite a bit of leftover roast to eat.
Yesterday I went and bought some torpedo-shaped “bolillos” at the local Mexican panaderia. These are the best sandwich rolls in town, flaky and crisp. Then I made some rich beef and onion dipping stock from Better Than Bouillon. I toasted the rolls, thinly sliced up the leftover lamb, dunked the slices into hot dipping stock, and piled the dripping meat onto the toasted rolls. Voila, lamb French dip sandwiches. We had them for dinner last night, and they were topnotch.
I have to remember to buy those bolillos more often. I bet they’d make superb garlic bread.
Morning. Happy to report no beer explosions. I only had the two as I wasn’t in a beer drinking mood. It was an exciting day of football though. And there’s more football today. I love football.
I’m awake but still abed. I did get up to take Buddy out and it’s foggy which I don’t see often. I may go back to sleep for a bit.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s 10c/50f with no predicted change today. Weather app says “I’m not going to lie. This day is fucking fine, but I’ll be happier with 15% fewer clowns.”
We are back in Largs after a night in Edinburgh and two nights in Troon so I am all socialised out for now! The music festival was fab, saw lots of great bands and caught up with friends. I am definitely ready for an early night!
The catsitter has been keeping us updated on the cats, Ophelia has not been very well so we will probably be having a serious conversation with the vet when we get back. Hopefully it’s just old age and nothing more serious but I want to talk to the vet anyway.
Good morning everyone.
It’s 43 degrees and foggy with an expected high of 45 degrees and a bit of rain throughout the day. We had lowland snow in the forecast overnight, tomorrow and Wednesday, but those days have now shifted closer to the weekend.
I grew up on sauerkraut too; my mother is from Germany and we also lived there for a bit. I don’t remember her making it from scratch, she mostly picked up jars from the German deli and then would cook it all day with pork or ham hocks. She would also add potatoes and caraway seeds on occasion. It always smelled like farts in the house when it cooked, but cooking that way took that wildly sour and sharp taste out of it the kraut. I don’t really make it now. I am a fan of pierogies but have never made any from scratch. I also grew up on potato and bread dumplings and Panni was my mother’s go-to for potato dumplings. She wasn’t much for cooking from scratch, but my Oma cooked her dumplings from scratch. The Panni dumplings were pretty good though. My mother often put a bread cube in the center.
I did some stuff out in the garage yesterday and emptied a cupboard that contained dishes I never use. I have boxed them up and will put them on the free table at work tomorrow morning. I can now store a lot of my coffee implements in there, along with the dishes the grandkids use. The top shelf has some serving dishes and my gravy boat.
I don’t have much on the agenda for today; some laundry and trash TV always. I may pull out the tree and start decorating it,
I hope you all have a terrific day.
Dishwasher has been emptied and refilled. I’m showered and dressed, as is FCD. I made his breakfast because I’m nice, dammit! And the rain has started. I think it’s recliner time.
Speaking of Moooommm! levels of laundry, I’ll have to wash my Packers rug I have in front my room, since somebody peed on it last night. [The Dude]That rug really tied the room together[/The Dude]
My maternal grandma(Polish, hospital lunch lady) made pierogies all the time. My mom, not so much(she was more into Hamburger Helper[)
Howdy, all! It is overcast and rainy and blah, which means it’s a perfect day to stay home with the doggy and do very little. I did have to put some sheets in the washer this morning, but other than eventually transferring them to the dryer my only plans involve finishing S1 of Wednesday (thanks again, swampy!).
Yesterday I finally decided what to do with the remaining decorations, and was able to put all of the empty boxes and unused stuff back in the two big Rubbermaid containers and stick them back in the third bedroom until New Year’s. It’s a small house, and having things “out” can quickly make the place feel cluttered…and I’m a little OCD* about clutter, so two days was about all I could take. Anyway, I decided not to bother putting lights on the crepe myrtle out front. No particular reason, I just don’t feel compelled to do it this year. But I went ahead and put my Doctor Who “Weeping Angel” topper on the snowflake tree – after a couple days of looking at it with just the star it came with – and re-positioned the mini spotlights I use to light the snowflakes at night.
The lights look a little ugly directly under the tree like that, but they light the snowflakes better from there than when they’re at the table corners. Still, I might wind up moving them a few more times this season. I’m also still futzing with a good location for the black metal snowflake, but I put batteries in the remaining battery-powered things and am now officially done decorating.
Here is one more picture, just because! This was “plan B” for the snowflakes, but it wound up being perfect for my ornaments:
I like that there is room for a few more, but I also like that the picture of my mom (at the top) is kind of “featured” at the moment. Another ornament is actually on the way: I’d forgotten that I bought one celebrating the Nationals’ 2019 World Series win, and I can’t have a Nationals ornament and no Yankees ornament! The latter should arrive on Saturday. I plan to put it where the small silver star is now (the one under the gold G-clef/next to the motorcycle): that’s the only ornament that doesn’t have any meaning, plus I already have a nicer silver star (bottom center) that was a gift. The small one is only there right now to fill that spot (did I mention having a touch of OCD*?).
*I know that the joke is to write “CDO” – like OCD, but with the letters in alphabetical order as they should be – and I started off with that in both places, but I’m a professional writer/editor and it turns out that I’m also OCD about acronyms!
I’m still deciding what to do when the inevitable “rate our service” request arrives. I generally skip reviews, and my understanding is that anything less than 5 stars could get the service rep in trouble, but this guy/experience might deserve some frank feedback.
No doubt in my mind!
Wanna write a dealership review?
I’ve never been a sauerkraut fan, but those sound really good!
The sacrifices we make… *sigh*
whew!
Keeping my fingers crossed for both you and the kitty…
Those are great!
Time for Christmas decorations in the hizzle. Q’itih had to investigate.
Were they nihilists?
Your decorations are beautiful!
I really need some groceries. I really don’t feel like getting off my ass. Don’t judge; last night kicked my butt and I gotta close again tonight.
I considered trying Wally or Meijer delivery service, but … I’m picky about certain things. What if I order crunchy P.B. and they sub smooth? Huh? Huh? What am I supposed to do with smooth peanut butter, eat it like some kind of peasant?
But I know chunky has been hard to get lately (that’s why it’s on my list! couldn’t get it last few trips) and I don’t want random substitutions.
Now, the Chewy order I tried for the 1st time, finally, a couple weeks ago after hearing so many good things for so long?
Yeah, definitely doing that again. Matter of fact, gettin’ low on litter so may have to indulge in letting someone else schlep the heavy stuff.
Damn leaf blowers have been going nonstop for hours again. WAIT NO OMG my retired old neighbor has a RIDING LEAF BLOWER Y’ALL I just saw (and heard!) him. Holy bananas, is there a noisier and more wasteful waste of fossil fuels? Grrrr.
Man, I’m cranky.
