Defiance (new SyFy series/game/something) - any chance this is going to be good?

I saw that and said they same thing, it was like Toonces was driving.:cool:

The protagonist is too Tough Guy, there are too many alien species, and that interbreeding thing they alluded to.
But Mrs. Plant (v.3.0) likes it, so we will continue to watch it. Peradventure it shall come to pass that it will get better.

And he wasn’t watching the road.

Part Terra Nova, part Outcasts, part BSG New Caprica, a tiny part Eureka = no originality, complete predictability, no risk-taking. It needs a Whedonesque final polish to make it decent, and that ain’t gonna happen.

I’ll give it a chance, but I don’t hold out much hope.

I’d watch that show.

Judging by the promos for next week, they’re “mining” the rubble of St. Louis.

I liked the last scene, reminded me of Fallout.

I don’t like the makeup they use for whatever type of alien main guy’s daughter is. She looks bad. Also don’t really care for the goth aliens. Did like those ones like the doctor and the traitorous mayor’s assistant.

I, an old broad, went out to lunch with a couple of old broad buddies a week or so ago, and they are sci-fi geeks and were telling me they were looking forward to this. I watched about half an hour of the first episode but thought the main character’s alien daughter looked stupid ugly and star-trekky. (So I switched over to something more in my demographic, like QVC!:p)

It has been renewed for a second season.

They’ll cancel Alphas, but renew this dreck? Pfaugh. :smack:

Well, I figured it had at least as much staying power as Terra Nova. Now to see if it can beat Dollhouse.

They have too much invested to just cancel it after one season.

Color me surprised.

I tried to give the show a chance by watching another episode. Pure dreck, and this is coming from a science fiction fan, and you know we have somewhat of a tolerance for dreck.

The daughter looks more like a Star Trek character with each episode. I wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few former makeup artists from TNG and DS9 were now working on Defiance.

With this past episode, you can add “part Firefly” to the list of shows this show borrows from. Still watching though.

I actually like it. The story and the characters are coming along nicely. Sure it has it’s problems, but it’s still finding it’s legs. Like every sci-fi show I’ve ever liked, the first season is about slinging shit at the wall to see what sticks. The list of genre shows with wobbly first seasons is a mile long, including TNG, X-Files, Buffy and Farscape. Of course, if you don’t like it you shouldn’t waste valuable time torturing yourself. But, I am willing to see where it goes.

The Firefly influence has been obvious from the first episode. Hell, from the commercials *before *the first episode.

While there’s a lot I don’t like about the show, there are a few things I like that are enough to keep me watching. Jaime Murray’s character–Datak’s wife–has been a high point as the seemingly gentle and subserviant spouse who is actually more conniving and ruthless than her husband. Unfortunately, she wasn’t in this latest episode.

It’s quite wobbly, but I agree that it is good and will find its legs.

I’ve found it engaging to date. I am surprised to be saying so. If they can find a way to bring out the alienness of the new Earth residents without relying merely on makeup and the odd definining character trait (them red haired aliens sure are impulsive!) I think they might have something.

They can’t even be consistent about how damaged the arch is. Does it have some huge gap partway through or is it a full arch with just some rough looking patches so that Marilyn Manson can run a radio station at the top?

And why isn’t the arch underground with the rest of St. Louis, anyway?

That has been consistent, as far as I’ve seen, and I’ve been paying attention whenever they show it. There are places where the “skin” is missing, but the internal framework is still there so that there are no empty gaps. It’s been like that in every episode.

Actually in some of the promo posters there does indeed appear to be an empty gap in the arch, which is stupid, but I don’t think it’s ever looked like that in the show itself.
