Glad that everyone seems to be weathering Hanna pretty well.
Hope the weather is treating Mahna well.
OK…taped and caulked the top of the outside wall’s baseboard. First coat of primer is on the trim around the window. I hate painting over wood, but it’s not in good shape and would need to be replaced to look good. (There are lots of little holes from previous window treatments and the window sill has obviously been wet more than once, so the grain is all raised and the wood is grey.)
Now, for a change of pace - since the weather is so nice and it actually rained last night - I’m going to go outside and weed and prune stuff.
But first…NOL. What should I have? Tomatoes, basil and fresh mozarella are a given. Not sure what else to have with them, though.
Mama Tigs if SnowBunny won’t measure her foot for you, I’ll measure mine.
GT, I say you have the makings for a fine lunch. Just sprinkle some French or Italian bread with olive oil, apply tomato, basil and mozzerela. That sounds like the yum to me. Thinking of lunch, I should probably have something in addition to the ice cream…White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Hagan Daaz. Nom Nom Nom.
Pie, I almost asked someone in person for a cite a few weeks ago. She was telling me that it’s bad to put any kind of plastic in the microwave because it releases (name of offending chemical).
Mom and Aunt left Illinois at 6 this morning, they are making good time as they travel through Ohio. I talked to my Aunt earlier, and if they run into Hanna, their plan is to pull over to the side of the road and wait for her to pass. :smack: I can only hope that they don’t get washed off the road with all that rain.
All things considered, Hanna has been a brat more than a bitch. We went to breakfast and to Lowe’s, then ran over to the marina to check on the boat. It was blowing like crazy, but no rain for the moment when we arrived. Ours was doing just fine, but there were a couple others that were not secured well at all. As we stood there trying to figure out how to keep one idiot’s boat from destroying one that was tied up properly, the wind really picked up and the rain started. There was another man there, and he and FCD worked together and secured 2 that were the worst off. It didn’t take long before we were all soaked to the skin and dripping.
Daughter and I went back to the car while **FCD **helped the marina manager secure another boat. Lenny asked him to stay and help out, but, thankfully, he declined. We squished our way home, changed, and went to work in the basement. The closet light is now installed, the mudding in the living room is done, and it looks like the worst of the storm has passed us. We shall see.
And that’s all the news that’s fit to share for now…
But…but…we want the news that’s not fit to share!!!
I’ve done some cleaning in the garage and am now pruning cactus. I have two that are way out of control. It always goes slowly because I have to hold part of it with needlenose pliers while I disconnect it from the rest of the plant. One of my neighbors wants some so that she can have her own, so I’m potting some up as well as other perennials that I’d like to move, divide or whatever…
I’m feeling like I could use a nap, but I need at least to get the cactus paddles in dirt…
Anyone want to come over and help me out in the garden? I would feed you. ::Looks pathetically at gathered Mumpers:: Pleeeeeease?
You can prune cactus? Yeesh. You’re brave.
I’m making cheese bread and wondering when “Early Afternoon” is if you’ve got a whimsical European laid-back sense of time, because that’s when a friend (with that sense of time) is supposed to come visit. Mr. lissar’s off at his pre-grading for his second-degree black in Kobudo, and Nat’s been asleep for an hour.
Good to hear Hannah is not causin’ too many problems. Sounds like Fay here. Just lots of wind and rain. The rain was welcomed. Ike, however, who the heck knows what he’s doin’!
Had a nice afternoon at the pool. BioRosie I had two Mike’s Hard Pomegranate Lemonades and two Mike’s Cranberry Lemonades. Friends brought a case of Mike’s over with original Lemon, Lime, Pomegranate and Cranberry. They were iced down and tasted soooooo good! Plus, they’re takin’ us out for an early dindin at a local fish/seafood place. NUM!!! We’re goin’ at 4:30 P.M. which will be good since brekkies was around nine and we didn’t do NOL. If hunger sets in a little later, there’s ice cream to be had.
That Death Chicken recipe does sound very good - thanks, Rigs; I think we’re going to try that sometime next week.
Well, we lost partial power - yes such a thing is possible - around 11 am and didn’t get it back until a little bit ago. So Hanna was a bit of a bitch here. At least IMNSHO! The power loss affected my fridge, the bathroom and the bedrooms, so I couldn’t get in my bed and watch tv or read - not a happy camper! Also, I was worried about the food in the fridge, but I think it’s all okay; the freezer is fairly full.
My Safeway deli sometimes has this Greek Orzo salad, which is mostly orzo with feta and tomatoes with greek spices. It’s really good, though, and I got nearly a full pound of it yesterday. I also have plenty of coldcuts and onion rolls. Yeah, I was prepared in case we did lose power.
Ah well, I just finished watching “The Big Country” (great Western, btw - with Gregory Peck and Charleton Heston) on TCM, I think it’s time to go lay down for a bit.
Yes, you CAN, indeed MUST, prune cactus. Unless you want it to take over completely. It’s way invasive. I took pictures of the after of the smaller one and before of the larger one (which will be pruned tomorrow. It has a bonus forsythia growing inside it (My main forsythia used to be next to it.) Hopefully, I’ll be able to liberate the forsythia and move it out back. (It’s not a great forsythia, but it can hide along the back fence.)
Pulled a bunch of weeds. Millions to go. Exhausted. Shower, then nap. Parentheses invading. Pronouns disappearing. Bye.
And we’re done for the day. **FCD **and I are all showered and clean at last - I even scrubbed the shower because it was getting ick. You should be impressed because it’s about my least favorite chore evah!!
Daughter is enroute to the Branch Ave metro station to pick up her Brit friend who’ll be spending a week with us. SIL just got off work and he’s going to stop and get me some brown sugar so I can make the peach french toast casserole for breakfast tomorrow. Dunno what we’ll do for supper since Brit friend is a veggie. Pizza perhaps??
I’ve got the 3rd load of laundry in the dryer and the fourth in the washer. Two more to go - gotta do the whites tonight, I think. The jeans can wait till tomorrow.
The rain appears to have stopped and it’s not very windy at all. According to the weather radar, Hanna appears to be in Delaware, and we’re done with the rain. So much for all the pre-storm panic. My daughter’s class was all wound up, certain they were facing the end of life as they know it. But after teacher pointed out that she’d lived thru 5 hurricanes personally, they seemed to mellow a bit.
Anyway, it’s chill time. I’ve got a load of towels to fold and I really should empty the dishwasher. Oh, and I ran the vacuum earlier. I swear, Bernie has shed so much, I can’t believe she’s not bald!! Stoopit dog.
I felt great all day and now have a splitting headache and the chills. Why? Soccer game was good. I saw an old friend and we talked. He’s originally from Scotland and a lot of fun.
have to go get #1 son from work. Made cookies this afternoon. Exchanged exercise bras at Target. Wasted time. a good Saturday, but for my head (methinks it’s sinus–gah).
I’m glad you all like the death chicken recipe. It’s one of my favs from the Sweet Potato Queen’s books.
Back from early dindin. What? I said it was gonna be early! GRRRRRR… I thought we were goin’ to Blackbeard’s but we went to Dead Lobster cause of the endless shrimp thing they got goin’ on. No offense to those of you who like the place, but Dead Lobster just does not do much for me. As per usual, the service sucked and it took waaaaaay longer than it should have for food to arrive. Still it didn’t cost me nuttin’ so there is that.
I’m glad Hannah didn’t cause problems for y’all. Let’s hope for the same thing with Ike. It looks like Josephine has all but fizzled out.
That bitch Hanna blew on out, and we have a loverly sunny evening.
I lost a single truckload of limbs from the peecan tree, about a week’s worth of nuts if it was pickin’ season, and I have to fix about 100 square feet of tin roof on the open barn. I haven’t checked on the apples yet, but the overloaded tree is still overloaded.
We got off light.
In other news, the housekeeper is in drug rehab up in Richmond, and fired. She took her monthly fee, then skipped out on us. Sayonara, bitch. We wanted to help, but we’re not suckers either. The door’s open when you get to that part of 12 step, but it ain’t gonna be fun for you.
Sorry for the headache, rigs. Hope it clears up quickly.
Mmmmmmm, free dinner. I’m not a big Dead Lobster fan either, swampy, but I’d definitely enjoy it if someone else was buying :D.
Glad to hear the damage wasn’t too bad, Bobbio.
OK…that’s better. Slept for 1 1/2 hours or so. Now I need to get back to the painting. Big fun!
I’m thinking of having baked French toast for dinner tomorrow. I’ll be out most of the day, so being able to come home and throw dinner in the oven sounds appealing. For now, though, I need to figure out what to have for dinner tonight. I’ve already had lots of triple ginger cookies. (Ginger has medicinal value, you know.) But I want something else. Maybe a couple of quesadillas.
Do you really think that cleaning bitch would have the nerve to show her face to you and your wife again, Bobbio? You’re way nicer than I would have been, because I would have had her ass tossed in jail. I cannot abide thieves and liars.
I’m sorry about your headache, **rigs. ** Hope it clears up soon.
I’m with you swampy. I do not like, I say, I do not like, Dead Lobster. As you have already mentioned, the service almost always sucks, and frankly, their food is not all that great.
**Mr. Taters **decided he wanted to bake bread and make ice cream today. So, we currently have bread going in the bread machine, and simple vanilla ice cream going in the ice cream machine. In about 40 minutes or so, I’ll start the the Death Chicken. As the bread takes three hours, I’d like to time the chicken to be done about the same time as the bread.
That’s about it for my all exciting day. I need to pick my daughter up from work at 11:00 pm tonight. I hate having to do that, but I dont want her walking home that late for safety reasons. We live in a fairly nice area, but you never know who or what you’re going to run into.
I actually saw sunset tonight. And the moon is peeking thru a few tattered clouds. Tomorrow will be sunny and hot - with luck, my car will dry out quickly.
Last load is in the dryer, and I need to build breakfast. I don’t want to, but I know I’ll be glad in the morning, so off to the kitchen I go.
Not much to add, but did you know that you can now see who is checking out your profile? And I responded to the friends’ requests: burn in hell, ALL of you! I delete you from my sight!!!
(just kidding).*
*definitely need to go to sleep. Was posted in spirit of silly fun. Hope it reads that way…
Dead Lobster lost its appeal to me years ago. Apparently, though, they have gone beyond deep fat fried seafood, though, so that’s all good. Glad Hannah turned out to be more bark than bite. I think god needs to stop playing swirlies with the Atlantic ocean about now, kay?
Taters–report back re the chicken please. I want to know what you think.
