Demons Souls on PS3 anyone?

Anyone playing this? Just picked it up. It’s strangely compelling. Not sure what the hell I’m actually doing yet.

Can we team up or anything?

Hooray! Someone to share my frustration with! To definitively answer your questions:

Yes, you can team up.
No, I have absolutely zero idea how to do that.

I haven’t had tons of time to play, but may a few weeks from now. If you can figure it out by then, I’m in. I don’t think you can do it until you’ve beaten Phalanx and gotten to the hub world.

What the fuck is Phalanx?

This game is hard as shit. I’ve died like 15 times in a row and, of course, keep losing my souls (?) so I keep going back to get them. I’ve found that a magician is the best guy to use as he can attack from a distance but I don’t seem to be able to find any magic power potions or whatever the fuck to recharge my magic. One of the keys is to parry and riposte, which works well most of the time. Don’t try it when there are multiple zombies around though or you’ll take it in the fudge pipe.

Yeah, we need to team up or something.

Phalanx is the boss of level 1-1. Yeah, patience is the key for this game. Magician is good, but I’ve seen Royal listed as the best character for new players. Either way, there are tons and tons of FAQs out there to explain what in the world is going on. Personally, I just watched a bunch of YouTube video walkthroughs to get me through 1-1. I don’t feel the least bit bad about it - I’d do it again.

Isn’t it bizarre how this game keeps you coming back? It’s incredibly difficult, no doubt there. But the combat is fun and the exploration aspect keeps you coming back for more. It never tells you where to go and will fuck you up and take all of your XP in the blink of an eye but for some reason it doesn’t infuriate me. I keep getting a little bit further into the level each time I start over. I wish it pointed me in a direction a LITTLE better than it does as it doesn’t feel like much of a narrative as it is but the atmosphere Is great and so is the combat.

Glad you like it - that’s exactly the impression I got when I started playing. While (constantly) losing experience is frustrating, when you get a chance to actually level up it’s worth it. The other nice thing is that you don’t lose equipment when you die, so you can continue to stockpile health/energy if you hit a tough spot.

And as you may have figured, it really does pay off to really try to recover your lost souls when you die. (Though that’s not as useful to you right now, since you can’t level up yet.)

Have you gotten to the top of the rampart yet, with the badass knight that kicks your ass all the way to Tuesday? Once you figure out how to kill him consistently you’re ready to really push for Phalanx.

From what I’ve read online there is no way for you to partner with a specific person, only random players, so I don’t know if we will be able to.

I got on top of that wall where the catapults are if that’s what your asking and I can beat all those guys. If I go right I end up staring down some red eyed knight who I haven’t fought yet. Maybe I should?

I’m still confused about magic though. It seems as though you have X amount of magic and when it’s gone it’s gone and doesn’t regenerate. Once I ran out of the magic potions I never found any more.

I’m tempted to get this game…I have a bunch of money in Amazon gift cards, so I was thinknig of getting a couple PS3 games, since I finished two out of the three tha I have (though to be fair, the one I have left is the God of War collection, so it’s really two games…)

I played 3-D Dot Game Heroes, which is made by the same developer, and in another internet forum I go to, a lot of the discussion of that game would seque into Demon Souls, and how painstakingly hard it was, but still fun and rewarding.

Well, it looks like there’s a formula involving character levels, stones, timing, and location. But it’s doable. It isn’t via friend list, which makes it hard. The way you do it is to arrange a (very) specific location on the map in which to meet which makes it possible. When I get a chance, I’ll do more investigating.

Finally beat the Phalanx. I have like 5k souls but can’t figure out how to upgrade my guy’s stats?

This game is fun and I enjoy the high difficulty, but they could have at least put one or 2 checkpoints in the levels so you don’t have to repeat so much each time. I lost 3000 souls because I died a 2nd time right next to my bloodstain.

Oh, BTW, I started a Royal and it’s MUCH MUCH easier. Unlimited magic right from the start and it’s powerful enough to 1hit kill almost everything you encounter. Kind of makes all other classes less appealing to be honest.

There are “checkpoints”, some gates stay open once you get past them making return trips a lot easier. This game is tough but incredibly rewarding, you can feel yourself getting better at it and it is very satisfying.

Have you been to the hub world yet? Talk to the chick with the really tall staff.

You don’t regenerate mana unless you have an item that allows that.

That’s why the noble class is best, they have magic as well and start off with the “fragrent ring”, with that on you regen mana.

Later on you can get or make a “Cresent weapon” … holding that will also make you regen mana which stacks with the ring.
