Ontopic: I think Der’s big problem is he speaks in absolutes. If you mentally include a (some) into his statements, they are all pretty reasonable.

Oddly, Der Trihs actually does have a sense of humor. He’s the only guy I’ve encountered who can be both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious. Most people are one, the other or most commonly neither. Not both. In fact, I’ve never even heard of somebody combining both traits: maybe this is some sort of historical first. I knew you could do it Der: congratulations.
Well yes. There are leaders far, far worse than Saddam in the world. And who possess inferior weaponry. We didn’t fight Iraq because Saddam was evil.
I read the beginning of the linked thread, and then I got bored and wandered away. Like many of his viewpoints, I agree with the essence, while being unconvinced on the scope. I do certainly agree that some - probably even many - and maybe even most - American women are fearful that any man could be a rapist. I don’t think that’s quite the same thing as being fearful that every man is a rapist. And I think it was certainly a perfectly cromulent point to make* in a thread about rape-culture assumptions of modern feminism*.
So he hates women, he hates Christians, he hates Jewish people, he hates pagans and he really, really hates Republicans. The hates Conservatives and “right-wingers”. He hates Americans, he hates anyone in the armed services or armed service support. He hates “pair-bonding”, he hates families, he hates children loving their parents (although “affection” is okay.)
OK, sure, he might like John Lennon. But the list of people he hates is pretty inclusive.

No, but it sure as heck helped that he was. Had Saddam not been such a scumbag, it wouldn’t have been as easy to make a war over deposing him. It’s a LOT harder to convince people that somebody has to be taken down if they aren’t as evil as Saddam. That was all I was saying.
I wasn’t saying that America was all in the right, or that we did not have our own motives for heading into Iraq. We ALWAYS have our own motives in anything we do. Just because somebody approves of Saddam being taken out of power does not mean they are a gung-ho, pro-everything-the-USA-does-airhead. Or a man. Or use birth control. Actually, come to think of it, why DID you think I would use birth control? Shouldn’t I consider that a sin, if I fit the sterotype you tried to paint me as?
These kinds of blatant assumptions are what I’ve noticed from Der Trihs time and time again. I fail to see how anyone can think that kind of behavior can add anything to a disscusion. You don’t get anywhere insulting people who disagree with you and painting them all with a broad brush of hyperbole. It just pisses them off, and leads to pittings such as these. If one isn’t looking to add to the discussion, that’s one thing. But if they are, acting like Der Trihs will get nothing fit for anything but the Pit.
There’s such a thing in life as considering the degree of something. Der Trihs is a man - a white man, I believe - in a First World country. He is, as someone once put it, playing the video game of life on its lowest difficulty setting.
All in all, the relatively low likelihood of a minor slight of the sort you mentioned doesn’t quite outweigh the advantages.
Well, because he also goes around talking about how everyone else is misogynistic. All Christians are, for example. It’s news because he actually talks like he thinks misogyny is wrong. Thus, perhaps this might actually get through to him, unlike every other pit thread.

George Bush killed because of HIS beliefs, Der Trihs has managed NOT to kill hundreds of thousands. This makes him infinitely less bad than GWB. Hope that clears that up for you.
That would work, if he actually debated, with facts and citations. He doesn’t. An example from the past:

Me: My brother just got back from his 2nd trip to Iraq. He says it’s bad, but it’s getting better. Lot’s of work to get the lights back on and the structure of society going again.

No facts. Just opinions. And when asked for facts, he runs and hides, probably crying to himself that we are picking on him.
He’s a detriment to the board, and the causes he purports to support.
There’s also a huge difference between saying that men occasionally encounter some discrimination, which no would deny, and claiming that most American women were extremely prejudiced against men and view men as rapists and monsters.
Frankly, I’m surprised at the number of people here defending him.
I wonder how many of them would be defending him if he’d made such comments about blacks.
I doubt he’s remotely as open about his beliefs IRL as his internet persona is. The ability of the internet to allow someone to express themselves anonymously with little if any consequence can bring out the worst in us all.
I should add that there have been plenty of times when I can be included in that.

I don’t think that gets him off the hook. A grumpy old fuck who hates people for being people is a misanthrope. But someone who hates women for being manipulative and deceitful, Americans for being greedy and sadistic, Christians for being hateful and stupid, members of the military for being whatever the fuck he hates about them etc etc is not a misanthrope, they are just an over-achieving bigot.
And I don’t even know what the fuck he means by the passage quoted in the OP. What on earth is “treating every passing male as a potential rapist”? I mean, when I lock my car doors at the mall, am I treating every mall goer as a potential thief? When I keep an eye on my baby at a craft fair and don’t just leave him in the stroller in the center while I wander around out of eyesight, am I treating everyone there as a potential kidnapper? When I don’t pet the strange dog running up to me in the park, am I treating every dog as a potential biter? It sounds like in his world, a girl that doesn’t get shit-faced drunk at a frat party because she doesn’t know the guys there and doesn’t want to pass out in a back room of a house full of drunk strangers is some how wounding men everywhere with her suspicious ways; a woman who doesn’t let a strange man pick her up at home for a blind date is doing his psyche harm with her unspoken accusation; anyone who has ever wondered, even for a second, why does that man with no children like to hang out at the playground for a couple hours each day is grinding away at the dignity of his entire sex.
This is a guy who thinks it’s just plain sense to tape every sexual encounter because it’s reasonable to assume a woman will cry rape at random, but is angry every single day that a woman might suspect something of him. It’s madness.
That is what I can’t stand the most about him. He cowardly refuses to participate in pittings of him. If he did so because he objects to the tone of the pit I would have no problem with it. But he joins in on pittings of others. That’s just cowardice. Par for the course for an Internet tough guy.
John Mace challenged me to read this thread to see people defending Der Trihs. I did, and the folks who are actually defending him are like a who’s who of Dopers I have no time for, it’s kind of cool. (Well, liberal Dopers I have no time for; it’s not like Clothahump will come to DT’s defense).
And then there’s Manda Jo showing her customary awesomeness. That last sentence I quoted, that’s some wisdom right there.
