There is a measure of prejudice against men that I think Der Trihs feels is unfair. Witness the recent airline who moved single men away from unaccompanied minors. The women who took the men’s seats were thanked as if they were heroes, and the men moved as if they were convicted pedophiles. I don’t think that’s right so I think DT has a point sometimes
I’ve warmed up to Der Trihs over the years. I don’t agree with him all the time, but certainly most of the time.
I like him, because he doesn’t play games. He says what he believes, right up front, but he does not engage in weird manipulative rhetorical debate techniques. He doesn’t alter other people’s quotes, or quote out of context, or most of the other modes printed up in Hell’s own book of tricks.
I’m the female poster involved in the original exchange and I really didn’t feel as if Der Trihs was attacking me because his assertion was so absurdly preposterous that I couldn’t take it seriously.
I did find myself cataloging all the men I come in contact with regularly and I can honestly say I’ve never ever ever thought of any of them as potential rapists.
Sure, some of them are sexists but I’d bet the farm that none of them are rapists-even the ones that tell really bad jokes about women.
I don’t know enough Der Trihs well enough to speculate on his social or sexual interactions with women IRL. He does remind me of a certain kind of liberal male type that I’ve run into before albeit rarely.
They were the guys who just were unable to see it when they were doing or saying something sexist or racist. Instead they got really really angry if you pointed that out to them because it contradicted the smugly comfortable liberal identity that they had created for themselves.
Now I’m about as bleeding heart liberal as they get-I normally describe my politics as left of lunatic fringe.
However I’m also a white person and I know that I’ve had negative thoughts about brown and black people that were solely based on unconscious bias.
An example: I realized that when I was describing people that pissed me off while I was driving, I would only use race as a descriptor when it wasn’t a white person that made me mad.
“A Mexican asshole cut me off” or “A black guy nearly hit me cutting across three lanes.”
Using race to describe someone is useful when it is relevant-if you’d never meet my friend Gail and you needed to know what she looked like I’d probably say “She’s a short black woman about 125 pounds.”
However, in my experience shitty drivers come from all across the racial spectrum. Adding race to my descriptions of bad drivers was racist unless I identified every driver that way. “ A white woman just cut me off at the stop sign.” “A white guy nearly hit me when he ran that light”.
If my whole existence was wrapped up in my perception of myself as defender of the downtrodden, the poor, and the oppressed I might get angry when it was pointed out to me that I was acting in a racist manner. I don’t think I’d assume that every person of color thought I was a one white woman lynch mob as Der Trihs assumes every American woman thinks he’s a monster. I’d just realize that maybe I wasn’t quite as enlightened as I thought.

Well, he’s directly responsible for the deaths of a couple hundred thousand Iraqis at least.

Der Trihs is a fraud. He plays around like he is an intellectual, but he’s not. As stated in the other pitting of him, he throws out more and more hyperbolic garbage trying to prove a point, but as soon as someone asks for a cite, he disappears. He is well spoken, and seems fairly well read.
But he is also a liar, and a fraud.
Ideally, he should be placed under a kanicbird like restriction on posting in political or religious threads, but that won’t happen because he is liked enough by mods. He is bulletproof. If a new person here said some of the things he has said over and over again for a decade, he would be warned, suspended, and banned in short order. der Trihs seems to be above all that.
It’s also pointless to Pit him, because his fronting only carries him to the point where he is taken to task for his lies and deceit, then he runs away, claiming some sort of special rights due to being an Aspy (self diagnosed, I believe, though I may be wrong) and having been bullied. Like that makes him special.
His vitriol and dishonesty lessen the board, imo.
The fact that Saddam himself was a ruthless, sadistic, cold-blooded dictator may also have been a factor.
Among the reasons I admire Der Trihs is his excellent judgment in keeping out of all the pittings he attracts, mainly from people he has frustrated in debate. “Oh, yeah, well, you SUCK, oops can’t say that here, can I? Oh, well, I’ll open up a Pit thread where I can reveal my frustration and my thwarted argumentation and my irritibility and general unpleasantness…yeah, that’s the ticket.” It must be tempting to come into the Pit and get a couple of shots in return, but he refuses to participate. Good on him.

So you agree with the quote in the OP? You may think of it as an excuse to attack him for his more “popular” political and religious views, but I’m actually looking at that particular quote.

I think that sums it up. I once wanted to open up a Pit thread (even went so far as tabbing bookmarks in Favorites - 1, 2, 3) but I’m not good at Pitting. If I had done it, though, I think that would be exactly what I was trying to say.
