Dexter 11/16 - with spoilers

yeah that was the most bonehead move, unless he was setting prada up.

Video taping the killing would be a good twist. I also agree that it’s possible the lawyer and the cop hook up.

I finally got to see this last night. And I’m conflicted…

First, as to where the plot is going: I think we’re about to get some revelation about Miguel that he plays fast and loose with the rules all the time and has innocent men sent to jail just to feed his sense of justice and vengeance. That does not bode well for him following the ‘code’. So my guess as to what’s going to happen is that Miguel starts killing people on his own - and he’ll be sloppy about it and kill at least one person who is innocent. As a result, Dexter will have to turn him into fish food. That’s my guess, anyway.

But my real problem with the show is the writing and acting. The scenes with Dexter and Miguel are fine, and both actors are great. But all the supporting storylines are poorly acted and really poorly written. The romances have no chemistry whatsoever. The characters all behave in an over-the-top fashion (Batista’s phone message was ridiculously overwritten and overacted). The single female lawyer trying to get Miguel is a stereotype of an ex-hippie ‘free spirit’ lawyer. The scene in the bar where she propositioned the waiter was painfully written.

Speaking of that scene: I could swear that the way it was acted/written had serious lesbian overtones to it, which I thought was bizarre. Then I realized the acting or directing was simply poorly done and what was meant to look like female bonding just came out all wrong.

Dexter’s fiance’s ‘hormonal’ moodiness was way over the top, out of character, and borderline offensive to women.

The actress who plays Deb overacts every line she’s given. And her lines are often lame.

The worst was when Deb came out of Anton’s place at the end and looked up: “The trees are trimmed! The skinner’s been here!”. First, if the skinner was coming to kill an informant, is he really going to trim the trees while he’s at it? Second, did we really need to be told that? I think we all got the point. Third, having the character talk about a plot point to herself so the audience can hear it is the worst kind of hack writing.

So that’s my dilemma with the show. I love all the scenes with Dexter, but all the supporting stuff around Dexter is becoming increasingly annoying.

Well said.

Rita’s “I have a monster inside of me that I can’t control.” is another of those stupid lines. Every week I think “Why can’t he kill HER!?”

I’m not entirely convinced the ‘lesbian overtones’ are unintentional, and that would explain the awkward aspect in LaGuerta and the lawyer’s scenes. Deb’s just tries too hard, and that earnest desperation seems to be well enough portrayed to me. As for Batista, he’s a career cop, who has trouble expressing himself outside his working environment, and is forgiven a little stilted conversation.

In all, I think the pluses still definitely outweigh any minuses.

The tree trimmer isn’t the Skinner though, is he? Isn’t the trimmer just a lookout or watchdog for the Skinner?

I missed the first 15 minutes of this episode so that last scene with the trimmer going nuts at the mention of some guy’s name sorta lost me.

ETA: I totally agree with the hormonal Rita. Many women go through pregnancy without having mood swings and neediness. (Or cravings for odd food combinations.) The way pregnant women are portrayed on TV is one of my pet peeves, along with scenes of labor and delivery with mom screaming and threatening to kill her partner.
