IMO he deserved his shot at a time of his choosing, and I get that this close to the Oscars with a large viewership first-time-ever live Netflix special was a way to get equal footing with that shot, but I’m not sure if it was a true mic drop, or if it will continue the outrage.
I saw it. It was ok. Didn’t make me laugh too much , but he’s the sort of artist now that he’s going to do more of a TED talk than a bunch of easy jokes.
He had me when he was talking about abortion until he started going off about “women should be allowed to kill all the babies they want.” Meh. Bad phrasing and he kept rolling with that idea.
His stuff about his daughter was interesting. Both funny and a little cringey, but ultimately sweet.
I personally liked the way he handled the Will and Jada. He just went off and rightly so.
I think Selective Outrage was a timely title. People now days are so quick to get on their soapbox and cast stones at everyone while ultimately everyone is pretty hypocritical when it comes down to it.
He’s good at putting the mirror in front of people to make them realize projecting moral superiority over others is a foolish game.
I can imagine the enormity of getting his shot coupled with a live performance knowing people were tuning in to see what he had to say made it harder than usual for a clean show. That’s a tall mountain.
I think this depends on if you think Chris Rock is your kind of comedian. I think he’s “pretty funny, but not totally amazing” and I would describe this show as one of his better ones. Still, only pretty funny and not all that amazing. I prefer it to a lot of comedy routines, but it won’t come up again on replay for me.
George Carlin did the social commentary routine so much better than anyone today and it really shows. Chris makes great points. However, he’s just not as funny and cutting as George was. George remains just untouchable.
Do you really think the story about him getting his daughter kicked out school was:
A. True?
B. Not told to them until last night when this debuted.
If you would like to hear his bit on Will Smith, it starts with about 9 minutes left in the show.
I knew he had a special dropping on Netflix yesterday but did not realize it was live. I actually logged in to watch it didn’t see it available (I now know in hindsight he hadn’t done it yet but I had assumed it dropped at midnight) so I watched a special by Brian Regan from 2021 I had somehow missed.
There are moments here and there. Jim Jefferies brief bit on guns and how it all boils down to “I like guns,” was a great moment. Shame he isn’t consistently funny or sharp. I’m sure other comedians have had a few moments, but George from about 1992-2001 or so was just in the zone in a way I’ve never seen. Every TV special he made in that range was flawless. Flawless.
Haven’t seen it yet but I heard that it was mostly recycled jokes from random comedians from the 2010s. which sounds like the most boring and banal outcome.
The act was not amazing, but the ending was really great. Chris Rock is dead right, too. Everyone was ridiculing Will Smith and Will only smacked/hit a littler guy like Rock.
I still think Will Smith’s Oscar should be taken back.
I have two thoughts. 1) Smith’s performance in that tennis movie was amazing, and 2) he should not have hit Mr. Rock. I wouldn’t take away his Oscar (and, of course, they won’t)
