Dio couldn't be assed to provide a cite

From here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=11628428&postcount=43

You know, Dio, there are some folks on these boards who are careful to set out correct facts, so that when they state a fact, I accept it, in the knowledge that if I pressed them for a cite, they would be able to come up with one. I thoroughly enjoy discussing issues with them, for although we may take opposing positions, we are able to get on with the discussions knowing that we can trust in the other to not misconstrue the facts. We debate our opinions as to where the facts take us, not whether the other has pulled facts out his or her ass.

Then there are the people who invent facts so as to try to make their argument look better. Since a good discussion is grounded on sound facts, I tend to press these people to provide solid cites for their facts. Unfortunately, that’s where things often deteriorate, for that’s when folks who are talking out their asses either get upset at being called on their falsehoods and start stomping their little hoofies hoping to kick up enough dust that their initial falsehoods are forgotten, or try to weasel out of their falsehoods by asserting that what they said really is not what they said, or simply continue to assert their falsehoods while at the same time refusing to provide any substantial proof. Folks such as these carry no weight with me, and discussion issues with them is a waste of time, for as long as they are known for inventing facts rather than making an effort to be honest, their arguments are built on sand. It’s not an issue of whether I agree or disagree with their position, it is an issue of whether or not I can trust in them to not lie. In short, without credibility, they are simply wasting space on the thread.

People who say “Can’t be assed” should turn off Larry the Cable Guy/NASCAR, put down their Milwaukee’s Best, go out to their primer-colored Trans-Am parked next to the trailer, and head off with their shiner-sporting pregnant wife waving goodbye to enroll promptly in a seminar on how not to speak like an ignorant yokel who comes in a distant second when compared with your average sufferer of Down’s or autism.

On the other hand, if you are a Brit, you need to learn to spell; also, you talk like a fag and your shit’s all retarded.

I know (hope) you are saying “can’t be assed” in a pathetic subconscious attempt to show your hipness by parroting the idioms of the underclass and underclassy. However, you have succeeded, and marvelously at that, only in proving that you are possessed of the mental horsepower of no more than three houseflies, one of which was the subject of genetic research and has a penis attached to his forehead.

Please report to the nearest facility for education in the English language or in the alternative to your nearest military recruiter where you can put your copious mental talents to work on the demanding tasks of peeling potatoes, digging holes, or serving as the less talented half of the “You draw their fire and I’ll flank them” combo.

Post Script:
Thank you so much for looking out for the health of the threads in which you participate by both explaining how meticulously you analyze the credibility of each and every post in order to save the valuable time of other readers, and then posting a whole thread in the pit devoted, apparently, solely to calling someone a liar, when in fact the easier path might have been to just provide your own cite and call it good, avoiding the entire issue that has been raised re: your status as a linguistic vulgarian, as well as doing us all the favor of avoiding what is destined to be either a self-congratulatory “You’re right” thread or some other insipid convention of the intellectual hoi polloi populating this message board.

You didn’t read the link in the OP, did you?

You’re quite the moron, aren’t you?

If you knew how hard Muffin will be laughing at this, you would know that your good deed for the day is done. You couldn’t be further away from reality unless you theorized he isn’t actually a carbon-based life form.

You didn’t answer my question.

I’m sure in the real world he is a dashing professor of astronomy who uses his spare time curing cancer, raising money for charitable causes, and fighting crime, all while uttering classy bon mots and smoking (but not inhaling from) his briar pipe and chortling merrily as he adjusts his bowtie.

However, he (or she, who the fuck knows/cares), even if using the term as a secondary and subtle (and thus meeting my approval) further insult upon Diogenes the Cynic, who is in fact a smug mouthbreathing troglodyte, must be chastised appropriately for promoting the use of such an inane and patently trashy phrase. Perhaps some quotation marks would have been a nice touch to draw attention to the possibly sarcastic use of the offending idiom.

Of course, we are all burdened with the anonymity of the internet, and so must live with the images others draw up from the rough clay of the imagination when our written word leaps across the network into their brain. Thus the utterance of “can’t be assed” must be avoided lest one’s image is forever fixed as an utter philistine.

I thought this thread was about Ronnie James Dio.

People who don’t click links to find out what they’re talking about before shooting their mouths off are smug mouthbreathing troglodytes, etc. etc. etc.

Jeez ivn1188, you shore talk purty.

Pfff. What could you possibly pit Ronnie James for? Being too awesome? Giving us the devil horns sign?

He’s been performing for over 50 years. Obviously he made a pact with the devil.

In fact, the title of the thread is a paraphrase of Dio’s response to a request for a cite, “I can’t be assed.” While I’m fairly sure that I disagree with Muffin’s view on the subject in question, I’m positively sure that Dio’s, “My post is my cite,” shtick is getting dreadfully tiresome, and I whole-heartedly support this pitting.

And if it turns into a pileon on you for being an ignoramus, I’ll be happy to support that too. You’re not as think as you smart you are.

Just lovely when people interject themselves into a Pit thread and by their very nature, make themselves the butt of it.

I’m entertained. I give this thread 3 stars. I’ll check back to see if the quality entertainment continues.

Man, you are turning into a real fucking moron on this board. Jesus, I can’t think of anyone who’s fallen further in terms of esteem.

Heh. When I was happy to join the castigation of Bush, I was a darling. When I find subjects on which I disagree with members of the clique, I’m a moron.

Is there some reason that I should always agree with Dio, or that I should at all support his style of posting, other than that I generally agree with him politically? 'Cause that’s not a good enough reason for me. If I agree, I’ll say so; if I disagree, I’ll say so. If I believe that he is the magellan01 of the left, I’ll act accordingly.

Generally agreeing with his political viewpoints does not by any means require me to support him in every post he makes on this board. If you believe it does, too bad.

Its awful how often people despise a paragon of candor and integrity, isn’t it?

While ivn has clearly shown us all what an idiotic ass (s)he is, and I know that Dio can (to his credit, self-admittedly, although he euphermistically calls it using “hyperbole”) sometimes be a bit of a troll, a link to the whole thread rather than single post might be useful to place to interaction in some kind of context.

Hentor, what about Frank’s comment bugs you so? Are you surprised that some get annoyed by the manner in which Dio posts? Or do you somehow think that ivn has not demonstrated complete ignoramity?

Besides, isn’t the expression properly said, “I can’t be arsed?”

DSeid, if you go to the original link provided, simply click on the link there that says the title of the thread. THEN you can see the entire thread.

It’s simply easier to link to the post in question, rather than make people wade through the entire thread to find it.

Meh, screw the “can’t be assed” crap. The most significant (and paradoxically, the most philosophically typical) Dio quote from the OP’s link is:
