I do think this is a teaching tool, but very likely not in the way you do. Perhaps if you weren’t so drawn to group-think and prone to making justifications based on what the majority of people think or feel, you’d be better able to evaluate the appropriateness of individual actions.
I can’t recall Diogenes ever taking a cheap-shot personal swipe at someone’s family. At least, that’s what we all thought at the weekly Diogenes Defenders meeting last night.
How was it a swipe at his family? That one day his daughters will be attractive is a “swipe”? Isn’t it more accurate to describe it as a swipe at Dio himself and his expressed hang-ups and hypocrisies?
And this isn’t some bullshit rationalization, I honestly think you missed my point. But I won’t belabor it.
I find myself turning into “crotchety ol’ guy” as I get older (my family just rolled their eyes when I proclaimed, in the middle of Gran Torino, that THERE was my role model! Hey, Clint does tell people to get off his lawn, too).
What to do about it? I’ve often typed out a response to a GD or Pit thread, then before** I hit Submit**, I go get a refreshing ice-cold beverage, pet the dogs, then return to the discussion and see if I really want to keep blowing my own vuvuzela.
My other trick is to keep reminding myself of a couple of basic premises:
Experience Does Not Equal Evidence;
If everyone thinks you’re being a jerk, you just might be one, even though you know you’re just trying to make a point;
And, that we’re here to fight Ignorance, not each other.
I’ll be watching this thread, because any advice for Dio is advice for me – and many of us.
And I sometimes make my not-that-well-thought-out comments IRL!
(actually lost a best friend with a witty-but-he-took-it-wrong comment… and the sad thing is, it was so hilarious that I’d do it all over again)
Actually, in point of fact - a court ruling is only significant if the court in involved has jurisdiction over the persons at issue.
The original statement was that the settler, a poster, was a criminal. Whatever the rights and wrongs of being a settler, this is legally silly, because the settler is not subject to rulings of international law - that only binds nations, not individuals.
The extent to which a nation is truly 'bound" by international law, lacking a sovereign to enforce it, is another issue - one that can be debated seperately - but it is irrelevant here; as it stands, a settler is not a “criminal”, unless what they are doing is illegal under some local laws, because they are not as persons subject to the court’s jurisdiction. Such laws do exist in Israel, as there are “illegal settlements” (that is, ones lacking the relevant permits).
Now as to the point on disability - true, a court ruling does not in atself establish whether something is or is not a “disability”. It is persuasive evidence, nothing more. However, the WHO also defines “disability” as consisting of things such as infertility. The weight of the evidence suggests that it is, in fact, a “disability” and considered as such by the relevant authorities. There is no evidence so far posted on the other side, save bald allegation.
Or, if you are a troll like Diockless there, just slip in a few “No its not” or “Thats not what I said” style posts, keeps those plates spinning nicely.
I’m just trying to figure out how you two planned this, and how long it took to manipulate the entire board to set up the perfect thread, and the perfect setup…
If I wasn’t capable of using some discretion and anticipating how my post would be received, I might say something along the lines of, “Well, that oughta make them total sluts.” But I wouldn’t say that, because even though I am technically allowed to say it, it would be jerkish.
For what it’s worth, Bryan, I laughed at your joke (and got why you made it).
When I saw this thread my first impulse was to make a snarky comment like “Dio is being pitted again? Why don’t we just have a sticky thread?”. Then I started reading the thread and thought about posting something agreeing with the OP but I thought that would be futile.
Then I decided to have a sandwich instead, and it was good. So to anyone thinking of posting here, have a sandwich.
That’s not making fun. That’s tormenting. What an asshole. He did “what any guy would do.” Bull fucking shit.
This is the same guy who claims he would get on a school bus to confront the kids who were picking on his daughter, and yet he does arguably worse shit to someone else’s daughter.
I used to love the guy but he has turned into a real fucking prick know-it-all jerk. He really thinks that he can tell if a phobia is real or imagined? Just because it seems silly to him? As if phobias are supposed to make sense? He has a serious superman complex going on.
He takes swipes at lots of people and lots of families. Should it matter whether or not it’s someone who can answer back or can be recognized by something as anonymous as a screen name?
