Okay; so assume it is illegal for Israel to force, assist, or strongly suggest folks move there, as things stand with international law. If folks go ahead and move in on their own, what law where is broken?
Alternatively, we are a bunch of vulnerable little flowers who will be crushed by someone expressing a contrary point of view and not even bothering to explain why!
Yikes - whatever shall we do with someone who has the temerity to not agree with us, even when we are obviously right?
I know it gets everyone’s panties in a bunch when Diogenes does this, but really, if you know you’re correct and he is clearly not bothering to listen or to argue his case very well, just walk away. It’s a message board, and it’s full of people who continue to not agree with me on economic policies, environmental issues, child-rearing practices, abortion rights, and on and on. I may be annoyed when I run across them, but in general I’m not going to be especially upset by their refusal to listen to reason, even though I am obviously right on these issues.
I’m not going to bother hunting them down and forcing them to knuckle under using the weight of majority condemnation, and I’m not going to cry for moderation or pit them every week. Not agreeing with you does not make someone a jerk, even if they choose to disagree with you with their fingers in their ears saying “la-la-la-la”.
It’s not about him not agreeing (even if he chooses to disagree with you with this fingers in his ears saying la-la-la-la), it’s about him turning every interesting thread he enters into another thread about himself. It’s annoying, it’s disruptive and causes people to loose interest. Moderating to keep a thread on track is the norm around here and Dio gets a pass on it all the time. it’s bullshit.
Can you explain how he turns every thread into one about himself?
Seems to me he expresses an opinion based on personal experience. It may or may not be accurate, but a) it’s no more about himself than anyone else’s opinion and b) it would not be possible for him to derail a thread by doing so if people weren’t on the look-out for an excuse to lose their shit in a very personal way about Diogenes. There are some posters who even tend to bring up Diogenes in separate threads that he hasn’t even participated in.
So I’m very curious to hear about how Diogenes makes every interesting thread about himself.
ETA: I get that it’s annoying for someone to come into a thread about ice cream melting who says, “That’s bullshit. I eat ice cream all the time and it never melts.” I don’t get why it’s important to pay attention to that person to get them to agree that people have actually experienced ice cream melting. The exchange should last no more than three rounds.
A: Ice cream never melts.
B: Yes, many people have experienced ice cream melting.
A: They’re crazy.
B: …
This is really for lawyers, but one test is that after the legislature has decreed a particular law binding upon those subject, if someone perceives a violation a complaint is sworn and a judge ( with or without a jury assisting ) declares whether the action is in accordance with the law or if it breaks that law…
In the case of the Occupied Territories; the International Court of Justice, the Geneva Convention and the UN General Assembly — all of whom to which Israel subscribes — have declared Israel’s acts there illegal.
Less importantly, outside bodies such as America and the EU hold that position as well: of even less import a number of NGO’s concerned with human rights etc. also agree.
Naturally there are dissenters, as well as, say, the esteemed Professor Dershowitz, according to Wiki: ’ …though the Anti-Defamation League has argued that they are legal. Two legal scholars (prominent international law expert Julius Stone, and Eugene Rostow, Dean of Yale Law School) have argued that the settlements are legal under international law, on a number of different grounds.’ I am not competent to assume what factors may influence these last’s arguments, but their dissent however honourable cannot mitigate the decisions reached by the tribunals established internationally.
All of which means squat if the decisions are unenforceable; and, as for all recorded history and future history, Conquest and Possession determines use, and not Resolutions or Agreements.
Personally, I have no opinion on Israel’s actions — other than being glad I am not Palestinian — because a/ it’s none of my business, and b/ the world will do what it will do regardless of anything I think. But law is law.
Because the crazy never stops. It happens repeatedly. And what’s worse, it’s assertive. If it were one post it would be easy to ignore. Instead it keeps coming until it can no longer be ignored, and then it’s off and running to another 5-page trainwreck.
Dude has almost 50,000 posts. If we take away the crazy ones he’d have about 5.
But it does last more than three rounds. I have no control over others rising to the bait. He feels he needs to re-assert his craziness to every poster in the thread, over and over and over.
Honestly you’ve been here a while, if you are going to pretend his posts are not disruptive - fine. But it’s really easy to check. Further, I think it’s a little silly to suggest we all change our posting habits rather than have a mod nudge him into stopping the hijack.
Perhaps, but sparring requires two people to step into the ring.
I think you’ve hit on something here. Diogenes is dogmatic and assertive in his comments. That seems to pull something from a whole lot of other people. But that’s more about them than it is him. You ought to be able to resist responding to someone who tells you that ice cream doesn’t melt, even if they do not add “in my opinion” to the beginning or end of their assertion.
That’s hyperbole, of course, and particularly untrue regarding Diogenes. I used to say that people got pissed most because he’s always right. I don’t say that anymore because he has made a bunch of half-cocked assertions that are off the beam lately, but he still has been a more productive contributor to the boards than most anyone else in his time here, including myself.
