I was just thinking that if we dug a pit, and put Rand Rover and Diogenes the Cynic in it, then covered it with a device to turn self-centered, illogical arguments into energy…
Well, let’s just say we’d have a shitload of energy.
I appreciate your honesty here. And I know you’re not alone in this. I suggest you print this out and tape it to your wall. Then when you find yourself getting into an “Is” vs “Is not” battle, read it. I don’t expect it wold give you pause in every instance, nor should it, but it might prevent the most ridiculous fights, which would improve things for everyone. And you mainly.
I think as some people (not all) get older they get somewhat more fixed in their world views, and are less willing to concede opposing views on issues very dear to them. I have a few hot buttons like this, and will usually just walk away if it’s clear the rhetorical ship is heading into “Does So-Does Not” territory, as repeatedly arguing over opinions vs facts is kind of pointless and (honestly) I’m rarely, if ever, personally invested enough in an any online discussion for it to be the rhetorical hill I want to die on.
Diogenes has a fair number of hot buttons, and he is not willing to walk away or simply agree to disagree, or take nuanced postions on things. He will die on hill after hill. This is a great attribute for a crusader, but in casual arguments and discussions it makes people cross the street if they see you coming. If two debate or discussion participants are at pointless loggerheads in an online discussion it’s usually polite to step off the dance floor. Diogenes will not do this, and it makes for ponderous discussions and debates.
He’s not breaking any rules, he’s just making arguments difficult with his black/white binary approach to debate. As people get older they often either take a more nuanced and relativistic position on things based on life experiences or they become more rigid. He’s made the latter choice and it’s a pity because he has a fine mind.
I browse around here more than I post, but I decided that Dio had issues when I saw a thread about when parents, who are otherwise good people, make the horrible mistake of forgetting that they have a child in the back seat and the baby gets cooked to death. Someone posted a link to an in depth article that went into a couple case studies where it was clear that in these cases, the parents are average everyday parents. The end conclusion was the typical ‘It can happen to anyone and that problem does not discriminate with regard to age, gender, social status, income, intelligence, and just about every other factor.’
To which Dio’s response was ‘I’m better than that’ and his reasoning for this ‘factual’ statement was essentially ‘because I say so’.
I have to admit finding some entertainment value in seeing how many warnings Dio is willing to rack up on a matter of principle, or seeing him try to get really really close to the warning line on a matter of principle, or really anything on a matter of principle because his principles are amusing in a small-scale disaster kind of way, like a train crashing through a stalled 18-wheeler carrying chickens, scattering feathers everywhere.
Diogenes is obviously a precious little flower who must be publicly protected from us nasty imperfects by the moderators here. He is truly too perfect for this world.
