My favorite part of this has only really just begun. Now that Dio’s white knights are here, the new Usual Suspects, as it were, this thread is going to turn into the vast majority of the board vs. Dio and his water carriers. Which will in turn eventually generate a wave of sympathy for Dio because poor, pitiful him has to carry the burden of being the only person in the world with the right answers, and why don’t we just lay off?
Lather. Rinse. Repeat. It’s happened so many times that it’s completely predictable.
I’ve no love for Dio and should find a thread like this entertaining, but this is destined to do nothing more than feed into his persecution complex and bolster his self-image as the lone paladin of vicitimized women and children everywhere.

His first 50,000 posts work out to 6250 per year. Since then, he’s made 961 posts over 20 days which is a rate of 17,500 per YEAR! At this rate, he’ll hit 100,000 posts before 2014!

Another Diogenes the Cynic thread? Really? Why? Look, for whatever reason, the mods have decided his behavior doesn’t deserve banning. Ok, fine, whatever. At this point he’s not even worth dealing with as a person. Just think of him like a force of nature. He builds around a low pressure system and then he huffs and puffs and blows your thread down. Arguing with him, or even pitting him, is pretty much like standing in the middle of a Kansas field and shouting at a supercell. Doing it once I can kind of understand. But at some point you should just shrug your shoulders, head into the cellar, and let it blow itself out.
My issue with Diogenes’s involvement in the thread is that the legality of the matter is utterly irrelevant to the topic of the thread. Even if we assume that his assertion is absolutely correct, the OP of the thread isn’t asking whether it is legal and if she should press charges, she’s asking how to handle the situation. If it is illegal for him to spank the child without her consent, that doesn’t prevent her from allowing him to do so, if she so chose, or perhaps deciding she’s the only one that gets to. And, conversely, even if the behavior of the boyfriend is completely legal, it doesn’t mean that he should continue to violate her wishes about how the child should be disciplined. Neither helps resolve the situation of dealing with whether spanking is appropriate, potential inconsistencies in discipline, the role of the boyfriend in the child’s life, and the meshing of their families.
The law is not the arbitor of morality, nor is it useful for handling these sorts of complicated domestic dispute. It’s fine to take her side in the discussion, I just don’t think any of that information added anything to the issue and just proceeded to complicate it and clutter the thread.
If you’re referring to me as a water-carrier, why don’t you eat shit. Far be it from me to interrupt your fantasies about Diogenes masturbating. Seems like the only thing going on the SDMB these days.
It’s simple. Whether he realizes it or not, some of Dio’s behavior is trolling. But, he does contribute sometimes, so the mods are hesitant to do anything. It’s similar to Der Trihs, who, BTW, has gotten a lot better.
And, yes, I do believe you can troll without necessarily realizing it, especially with someone like Dio who will not accept the definitions of others. It’s basically a matter of knowing that a particular posting style causes problems on this board, and not stopping it. The difference with Dio is that I think he doesn’t stop out of some pride, rather than with the intent to piss people off. In his mind, people shouldn’t be pissed off at what he says, so that’s enough to allow him to say what he wants.
The problem is, even knowing this, his actions are the same as a troll, and thus he is trolling. I’m very glad he got an admonishment to stop doing it.
But the bigger offense is that he hijacks and threadshits, to the point that what was a useful topic is now not one. Why the mods don’t just force Dio to start his own thread when this stuff happens, I’ll never know.
