But I know I tried very good quality lox on at least one occasion. Decades ago I worked for a food distributor that served high-end grocery stores and delicatessens. There was a breakfast meeting with our sales staff and our customers’ buyers and the buffet table was loaded with the best quality items that we sold, including lox and nova lox. Tasted like pure Morton’s to me.
That job did widen my food horizon a lot, though, and I am still a confirmed cheese-aholic.
There are two types of lox. One is cheaper, and does indeed taste almost entirely of salt. The other is really expensive, much less salty, and tastes primarily of salmon, with some smoked flavor.
If you had really good nova lox and still could only taste salt, you and I have very different tastebuds. Which, of course, is quite possible.
Dying: Other. Due to a problem with hydraulics the boat went deeper than it was supposed to go.
Airplane safety briefing: No. But one does pay attention when the person giving the briefing is built like a football player.
Sports: Blah. I’ll never understand why people get so excited about ball games of any variety.
#: It’s a number sign or a pound sign. I use it for the former purpose much more often.
Powerball: Lady SCAdian says we won $12.
Thanksgiving: I assume we’re going to the in-laws’, which probably means turkey.
Pets: We’ve acquired four kittens in the last year. I expect all of them to outlive me.
Heroine: Is this a misogynistic poll I should be offended by? I voted Yes.
Veteran: Wartime, but not combat, veteran – 21.5 years in the Navy. Gulf War ('91): I spent a lot of time opening and closing doors and hatches that would normally be left open. Afghanistan ('01) and Iraq ('03): We shot Tomahawks both times – for me combat consisted of sitting in Radio drinking coffee and using the laptop.
Education: High-school dropout with a GED, so I selected “diploma”.
Bagels: Cream cheese, possibly with avocado or marmalade. And, of course, sausage, egg and cheese.
My poll (#2299): Judging by the number of “Huh?” votes and the paucity of votes for “Death” and “Allosaurus”, there are very few IWC fans around here.
Regarding the bagel poll, as a good secular Jew, bagels with Lox and cream cheese are my favorite - even if I have to settle for pretty crappy lox most of the time (or none to be honest) due to cost.
Of course, it alllll depends on the bagel in question, because each sub category of flavors works better / worse with others. Asiago bagels, poppy seed, onion, garlic, these all call for different toppings than the rare cinnamon raisin bagel.
My second favorite topping, is when I’m getting fresh tomatoes from MiL’s garden - cream cheese, thin sliced super fresh tomatoes, thin sliced red onion, salt and pepper. Ambrosia. For the first week or so, it probably TOPS the CC/LOX combo, but after you’re eating 20-30 fresh tomatoes a week for a whole season, it drops off quickly. Still my second choice though.
After that, just plain cream cheese, followed by butter. Although if I’m eating a more dessert-y / sweet bagel, compound butters (apple, honey) or cream cheese options (honey, walnut, etc) quickly take over from the plain options.
I treat “lox” and “smoked salmon” as synonyms. Except i suppose there’s also hot-smoked salmon, which is a different food. It’s good, but not as good as lox, IMHO.
Oh, I also like the cinnamon crunch bagels at Panera, but they’re not really bagels at all. The person who introduced me to them is only half-Jewish, so that’s my excuse.
I don’t particularly care which president would go on a new denomination of currency.
I voted for Fillmore largely due to the persuasions of the Society for the Preservation and Enhancement of the Reputation of Millard Fillmore, Last Of the Whigs.
Regarding the Duality of Trump, I went with prosecute under the ASSUMPTION that it was a successful prosecution resulting in actual penalties. Otherwise letting him ruin the (R) is a bigger assumption, with probably longer lasting consequences for the US and world the next time a populist fascist type whips up the mob in their favor.
