Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I wouldn’t unless the company encouraged me too. I would want to take the time to get used to the idea of this big change. And, I’m a project-oriented worker, and like to finish tasks or take the time to explain what I’m leaving to be finished to my coworkers. But the company would only get two weeks notice.

I know it’s an absurd amount of money, but I wouldn’t be comfortable until I had paid off the house. Also, I’m not letting anyone know, so this way no one’s going to be suspicious

You’re assuming everybody has the kind of job that they’re doing only for the money.

– really old farmers’ joke: what did the farmer say who won the lottery? “Guess I’ll just keep farming till it’s all gone.”

That’s also a point. If it’s one of the lotteries that lets winners stay anonymous, why wouldn’t you? and presuming that you were trying to, quitting immediately after ‘somebody in this area won a huge lottery!’ might indeed make people wonder if it was you.

I could afford to retire, and i haven’t. I’m working part time. (And if they figure out a way to keep it part time, I’ll stay. But that’s for another thread.) I like the work. I like the social interaction. I like doing something well. I like being appreciated.

If i won $100m, i would probably look for a job that helped the world a little more than my job as an actuary does. But i don’t think I’d find that immediately.

I like my work, and I’d be planning to give most of the money away.

I might just quit over the phone without ever going in.

Yep. I own the business and I wouldn’t even go in. With 100 million (or whatever is left after taxes) I’d need every one of my remaining days to work at spending it all.

This is me, too. I’d get bored awfully fast if I quit, even if I could afford to do so.

This used to be me, but now I’ve hit the age of 62 and have health problems. I wouldn’t be bored, I’d be working on bettering my health. But I’d still give a courtesy 2-week notice.

I have a question about one of the recent polls on pronunciation, by @Elendil_s_Heir IIRC. It was “do you pronounce Mary and marry” the same way.

I said yes because I can’t even imagine how they’d be pronounced differently. Is there somewhere with audio that I can go to try to hear the difference?

Mary rhymes with hairy
Marry rhymes with carry.

Nope. All four sound the same to me. But thanks anyway.

ETA: is this a British vs. American English thing?

Probably !

Yes, although there are regional differences in the U.S., too. I say them the same, but I have heard “marry” pronounced with a noticeably flatter “a” than “Mary.”

I guess I’ve never noticed it, and it’s usually something I do – i.e. minor differences like this.

Mary: Mehree
Marry: Mahree

I think I say Mary like you (and I) say marry.

“Marie” I say differently; there’s a difference in which syllable is stressed, but also in the vowel.

The Mary/Marry/Merry distinction (or not) is a classic isogloss (linguistic usage, vocabulary, or pronunciation boundary).

Chose 110 for the auto speed poll, tho that was on a racetrack with my road car. [Mid-Ohio]

I chose 120. I was stationed in Germany. I got my Dodge Shadow up to 120mph on the autobahn. The engine was fine but the rest of the car told me it didn’t like it there. It cruised just fine at 105.
