Thanks everybody, but I think it must be one of the sounds that I just can’t “hear” due to how I learned to speak.
Mary=Mayhr-ree like “mayor”
Marry=Mah-ree like “magic”
Merry=Meh-ree like Lisa Simpson’s expression of boredom
Marie=Muh-ree like “muddy”
Good on you. I even suspect I know which part of the track you reached that speed on. I love Mid-O.
I got a Ferrari up to 140mph on Thruxton circuit in the UK. I would never do that speed on the open road because there are too many risks involved. Fastest I did on the open road was 115, but on a road I knew well, in a car I knew well, during a time when I knew there would be an unlikelyhood of cops, rush hour traffic, farm traffic, etc. And once was enough because open roads offer far more unexpected risks than a closed race course.
Hairy rhymes with carry
Same thing; no vowel difference in those for me.
Believe it or not, I don’t know what that sounds like.
Now that one matches.
Yup. And with Mary and marry
Not where i come from !
Do you think those words rhyme with Barry, Carré, Gary, Harry and tarry (as in being late, not “like tar”)?,
I do…
What about lairy, fairy, dairy or bear E, (5th bear in an exhibit)?
Probably not Carré, unless I’d be pronouncing that wrong; my first syllable of that would rhyme with “tar”. But all the rest of them, yes.
– OK, Discourse is bound and determined to mess up the quote. Sorry about that, and hope everybody can figure it out anyway.
Yup. Must be my Texas twang

Mary=Mayhr-ree like “mayor”
Marry=Mah-ree like “magic”
I don’t pronounce either the way you indicated. The Mary example sounds forced and artificial to my ear. The Marry example sounds nothing I’ve ever heard. For me, the first three are all pronounced the same as your Lisa Simpson example.
The only one close to my pronunciation is the last one…if the (slight) stress is on the last syllable.
I’m not saying they’re wrong. I’m not saying they don’t exist. I just either don’t hear them or don’t use them.
On driving fast: When they first opened the 105 fwy it was like my private freeway. It was heaven! It was new, smooth, and empty. I had a 40 mile commute, and I’d regularly get to work in less than 25 minutes. Once, I was on the way home, and I was in a bit of a hurry, I figured I was probably driving a bit faster than I should be, so I glanced at my speedometer. I was doing 115 mph. It felt like 70 or 75.
Thanks, @puzzlegal. I was trying to use the quote function, and when Discourse wiped the whole quote out because it does that I tried using the “quote whole post” button, which resulted in the mess that you fixed. At which point I gave up.
As a dumb teenager, I once went over 90 in a not-great car on a straight and empty country road by moonlight - the car started shimmying and I knew I’d better slow down.
Once as a dumb teenager I got on the freeway late at night in my 1988 Buick. With not too many cars around, I decided to push the accelerator to the floor and see how fast it would go. The speedometer on that car only went up to 85 mph, but I had the needle pegged all the way to the right, so I would guess I was going 90 or so.

I figured I was probably driving a bit faster than I should be, so I glanced at my speedometer. I was doing 115 mph. It felt like 70 or 75.
I once got a Chrysler 300 as a rental car in the early 2000s. It was so smooth and quiet and powerful compared to the Saturn I had at the time, I was constantly going way faster than I should on the freeway without realizing it until I looked at the speedometer.
Regarding the sketch comedy show poll, I would choose SCTV.
The poll about if you had Monday off left off an obvious choice. I was off because it was scheduled off not because of any holiday. Not everyone works Monday to Friday.
It also left off being self-employed; in which case, while theoretically you can take off any day that you want (at least in some lines of work), in practice you may not have any days off.
Also regarding the Monday off poll, I was the one who took a vacation day that day. But it was because Columbus Day just happened to coincide with my planned vacation. I didn’t take Monday off specifically because it was Columbus Day.

Regarding the sketch comedy show poll, I would choose SCTV.
Ditto.
