Yeah, I’m not sure how I feel about that either because the results are so skewed. I’ve had 4 jobs since graduating college, which averages to 6 years. But two of the jobs were a year long, and the other two 11 years each.
As for the Santo and Johnny song, I picked it makes me nostalgic but I didn’t hear it until years later, but given it makes me nostalgic about movies set then from decades later during my own childhood or teen years (like Meremaids in 1990) I’m not sure that’s the sort of nostalgia the question is looking for.
As someone who has spent the majority of her career contracting, I can’t even count the number of jobs I have had. Project is out of funding, time to move on.
I’ve only been drunk about three times and didn’t like the feeling so I’ve almost always been careful with alcohol consumption.
Cities ride popularity roller coasters just like people do. It was good to see that others also think of Baltimore and some others underrated. I’d go back and vote Tampa as overrated, but I don’t care enough about Tampa to bother.
I’ve done 12 years at Safeway, about 2 years as a locksmith, a bunch of little 2-3 month gigs, and my current job where I just passed 14 years and expect to retire from in 20-ish years, knock on wood.
For over/underrated cities, I only voted on places I’d been over 5 total days.
I’ve actually been quite a few places, but very few places I’ve been are in either category, generally they’re pretty balanced with expectations vs flaws.
Las Vegas (NV) was absolutely overrated, but that was mentioned upthread. I also reported Albuquerque as underrated, as most people have an undereducated opinion of what NM has to offer. And with 2ish years in Alb. it has a lot more to offer than one would expect. I still prefer Cruces, but I spend over 10 years there, and while it’s an amazing city for it’s size, Alb. has so many more options. But I will agree that El Paso is a hellhole, but that doesn’t make it overrated - people know it’s a hellhole.
On Colorado Springs, as a resident, I feel we’re neither over nor underrated. It’s hard to NOT know this place is hugely conservative (taking baby steps forward, but still) and packed full of churches, and yet it’s surrounded by natural beauty. Then again, locals don’t see how the town is pictured by outsiders, maybe all they see are views of the scenery, the summer/winter sports, and don’t see anything else.
For that matter, I was amazed to see us in the 30s (barely) for population! Probably because CS has been growing the whole time I’ve been here, and that a lot of other metro areas are ‘smaller’ than expected - because only the direct city population was counted, and the contiguous metro areas weren’t included. And of course, no matter how much town grows, it’s dwarfed by Denver so it always feels small by comparison.
I didn’t recognize the song. I voted “before my time, not nostalgic”, but it wasn’t much before my time. I probably heard it as a kid and just didn’t take any notice of it.
I think of “under-rated” as meaning better than most people think it is and “over-rated” as not as good as most people think it is. By that standard, the poll is pretty difficult to answer.
We ate at one restaurant where we both ordered the seafood linguine because it was a melange of everything, and it was served with a whole scallop, it its shell, sitting on top. That was darn awesome. You never really get to see/eat a whole scallop, especially not in its shell.
I recognized it immediately because a local band apparently covers it. I always thought they wrote the song. They do it as an extended play thing, with each band member soloing for a bit. More of a jazz cover than anything. Cool!
I know the song pretty well, but couldn’t tell you from when or where…I have a suspicion that it might be the grocery store I worked at for many years, which piped in instrumentals all day and night. It doesn’t really evoke any feelings for me.
I chose crab simply because it’s what I eat the most of. While I like shrimp very much and love scallops, they are both occasional treats, and giving them up wouldn’t affect me too much. But I eat dishes with crab in them quite often, and would like to continue doing so.
I regretfully admit that I saw Highlander 2…on its opening night in theaters, in fact. A group of us, who had all loved the original film, went to see it together. By the end, we were all saying, “what the hell did I just watch?” We were also convinced that the sudden, stupid death of the Ramirez character, partway through the film, was due to Sean Connery saying, “To hell with this! I quit, write my character out.”
9 & 1 for the movies.
I thought that I was 9 & 0 and wished for an option for “none of them”, then saw Staying Alive on the list. All I remember about it was that I saw it and it was boring.
And for the shellfish poll, my fave is lobster, but I eat it maybe twice a year. So I voted for shrimp, my next favorite, which I eat a few times a month, so I would miss it more.
