Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

We have a lot of books, but I’d say I’ve read about 70% of them. As for knowing them well, cut that by about half, so say 35%, because I haven’t read a bunch of them in a while.

We have two cats; if they don’t show up shortly after I walk in the door, I’ll go looking for them. They aren’t allowed out of the house (and they have shown zero interest in ever trying to go outside) – if they don’t make themselves visible right away, it’s because we had the neighbors coming over to feed them while we were out of town, and they are still feeling a little spooky over that. But, once they hear our voices, they usually come out of hiding.

Thanks @Elendil_s_Heir ! I’m feeling better physically, but I’m in the worst of moods, irritable and gloomy. At least I see on Google that it’s one of many COVID symptoms.

Our dogs greet me as if I’ve been gone a week when I run to the store and am gone 20 minutes. They’ve never not greeted me.

“Get a shovel and dig a grave” wasn’t an option.

100% agree. I try to read traffic and have always been willing to take the exit because most roads near a highway can get you back to the highway at some point. It was more fun before electronic navigation tools existed because exploring is cool but it could also take much longer.

Jughead really? I remember him as a jerk.

I’ve been happy with my college experience but if I go back for more schooling, it will be in a different field, because I love to learn.

Restaurants. I adore cheap Vietnamese. So many other good choices, too.

My cat almost always comes to the door to greet me. When he doesn’t it’s usually when I’ve been away for a nonstandard interval and he’s asleep. If he doesn’t come say hi, I always immediately go find him - I’ve always lived in fairly small apartments, so it’s not too big a task - I’m simply too anxious to let his whereabouts be unknown. If I haven’t seen/heard him in an unusually long time, I go find him when I’m home.

Superman definitely has the advantage on strength, etc, but he’s a fully nice guy. Batman is a survivor and a planner. He’ll be thinking 20 different ways to take down Superman, and 20 more that are in direct response to what he thinks Superman will do.

All that said, my favorite is Green Arrow.

Having just reread The Dark Knight Returns, I have to say that the answer is clearly that Batman wins. Especially if Green Arrow helps.

Green Arrow is very good at tipping the balance.

I remember them as all being jerks, but Jughead as slightly less of one than the others, and Betty as less of one than Veronica. What any of them have been up to lately I have no idea.

I have no preference between Superman and Batman. And I don’t know what they’ve been up to lately, either. Are they even supposed to be the same people any longer? – but I don’t see any way that Batman beats Superman unless Batman’s carrying kryptonite and can get it next to or into Superman before Superman clobbers him.

The dog is left in the house if I’m going somewhere, because dogs can get into kinds of trouble that cats are unlikely to; and also this particular dog is still being trained about No Don’t Bounce Around In Front Of Moving Cars! The current dog still chews the wrong things if given too much chance, so he still gets left in his crate. If he’s not in there when I get home, and isn’t bouncing at me as I come in the door, I’m going to look for him immediately. The previous dog would have been left loose in the house; during most of her life I’d have given her long enough for me to put the cold stuff away and for her to try to get off the couch in the far room without my having to notice she was on it. When she was old and ill she’d have been checked on immediately.

As far as the cats it’s highly variable. An old and/or sick cat would have been left in the house and I’d be checking on them immediately. A young healthy cat who moved in after surviving a winter fending for himself on this hillside might have been left outside and if it was still the middle of the day I might not start calling for him till close to dusk; but if it was getting late in the day and he wasn’t right there to greet me I’d start calling him on the way into the house, because I shut them all inside at night. A cat who was in the house when I left and who I wasn’t expecting to be ill I’d expect to see at some point while I was putting things away and if I hadn’t I’d look for them after things were away and I’d been through the bathroom; though in how much of a hurry would depend on the cat.

As there was no option for ‘it depends on the cat and the time of day’ I didn’t vote in that poll.

Reggie could definitely be a jerk, a schemer and a bully. Veronica was often snooty and selfish. I liked all the others, but Jughead was my favorite, with the running gags of his love of food, distrust of women and stalwart loyalty to Archie.

Our dog Dewey, a lovable yellow Lab, used to come meet us at the door every time we came home, but he’s slowed down quite a bit. These days he’s more likely to stay on the couch and wag when we enter the room.

Superman is so vastly overpowered, he’d wipe the floor with Batman far more often than not. That said, I think Batman is the more interesting character.

Hope you’re doing even better today, gkster!

I couldn’t think of how to answer the pets poll because it’s really dependent on many factors. Our younger cat, who loves me best, will greet me at the door, sprawling on the floor in my way, if he’s awake when I come in. If it’s between noon and about 4, he’ll be asleep on a bed or cat tree upstairs. The older cat is generally in evidence during that time unless I already took her outside. If it’s anywhere near 6 pm, I expect to see both cats immediately, since that’s dinnertime. When we had a dog, it would have been strange for him not to greet me the instant I got home, and when he got old and deaf, he would be asleep downstairs where I could see him.

I’d go for the B&W picture, since the floodwaters and grey skies would look more newsworthy in that format.

Jeez. You save the damned president.

Not an option provided.

And I truly believe my B&W pic would be the one people would recall decades later.

Yeah, I wasn’t fully sure if the journalism question was tongue in cheek when my sister told it to me. I’m assuming it was, but given that it was a 2005 era joke, not 1965, many reporters might seriously entertain the “I won’t save.” It was also when Bush Jr. was president, and he wasn’t a popular guy.

I want to document events, not help shape them!

Yeah, gonna have to Kobayashi Maru this one and save him.

Nope, I reject the answers, which don’t match the question stem.

Me, too.

I mean, in real life, i try to save the president. But this is far from the only poll in this thread where my real answer isn’t one given, and here i felt i had a strong preference between the answers.

(I skipped favorite between Superman and Batman, however, because I’m not really wild about either of them. I’ve always had a soft spot for spiderman, though.)
