I too played a LOT of Stratego as a kid. Where did you typically place your flag and bombs?
Back row - either in a corner like this:
BS
FB
or somewhere in the middle:
SBS
BFB
where B is a Bomb, S is a Sergeant (to take out any Miners who get that far) and F is the Flag.
And you?
I actually used ChatGPT to make the “how old are you?” poll. It wouldn’t put the damned "* " before each choice though but search replace would
I have heard the term before. Since it’s derogatory towards a behavior I wouldn’t have a problem with an employee using it away from customers but it’s not professional to use it in front of them.
I realized there just aren’t that many board games I enjoy! Scrabble is about it for me, although I used to be really good at Trivial Pursuit, I suspect that wouldn’t be as true with a newer edition. I played a game called Codenames with my daughter and son-in-law, and that was fun.
The pie chart is kind of fun, but given the average age of the people responding, it needs to be bigger and have better contrast.
Agreed, but Discourse does what it does, so I did the Bar and Pie versions of the quiz
My ideal indoor temp is different night vs. day. I like it cooler to sleep.
I knew the Dope skewed older, so not really surprised by this poll, but damn this board needs new blood. NOBODY under 34?!
Maybe the young’uns haven’t rolled out of bed yet.
But it was just my machination

Agreeing. It also depends on what I’m doing. I voted according to what’s more or less the average; but what I really like, in the winter, is to be able to come sit next to the wood stove if I’m cold, but go into a cooler room when I start getting too hot; and in both summer and winter I like it a good bit cooler to sleep.
I recognize the word “machination”, but have only run into it in written form, and am not sure how I’d pronounce it.
I would generally correct the misspelled word and have it removed from the board; and voted that way – but I just noticed the “something else” option, and on consideration have changed my vote. Whether the person would then lose their turn would depend on house rules of wherever I was playing scrabble; and, if in my house, would depend on who I was playing with.
And I used to play with a friend, some years ago, who developed dementia, and took to making up her own rules. I didn’t argue with her about it, because she was no longer up to understanding the argument. She was still a pretty good scrabble player, though. – I wouldn’t have insisted on removing a word she misspelled, either, though I might have said ‘are you sure it’s spelled that way?’
There is now. Apparently only one so far, though; although of course not everybody votes in these polls.
More specifically, I ask “Is that a word!?”
Forgot the option: Depends, am I winning?
The heating and cooling question was a bit difficult for me. I don’t “keep” my house at a certain temperature. It varies. If I feel like it, I’ll crank up the AC and enjoy a cool house. Another day I might open the windows and deal with 80 degree weather. Same for winter, although we probably don’t have too wide a range.
ETA: it helps that we don’t live in a place where it stays in the 90s or above in the summer. Even our hottest days have cool nights and mornings.
Yeah, this is why I couldn’t find an option to vote for. If it’s too warm, I turn on a fan. On especially cold nights, we’ll turn on a space heater while we’re awake and watching TV/reading/etc. I never use a space heater when I go to bed, even if it’s really cold (for here).
Basically, I don’t do anything. At most, open/close a window.
I put ‘warmer than I’d like it during the summer’ because I’ve got one window air conditioner in a seven-room two-story leaky old house and it’s nowhere near up to the job when it’s hot. But even in summer the answer should be “other” (not an option given) because I also use the old-fashioned air conditioning: when the weather’s hot, close all the windows in the morning, open them all at night; and if the next day’s supposed to be hot but the night is chilly the house will start off the day colder than I like it, in an attempt to keep it from being hotter than I like it later on.
And I didn’t select anything for the winter options, because parts of the house will be kept quite cold and others will be quite warm. Some of the rooms get shut off if not in use, and some get more heat from the wood stove than others, and next to the wood stove it’s hot.
My wife and kids like it cooler, with the A/C on, than I do in the summer. I don’t think I should have to put on a sweatshirt when I’m indoors on a hot day… but sometimes I must, when I’m outvoted. I’m almost always the last person to want to turn on the A/C, when I think we could all be just as comfortable opening up a window.
In the wintertime, it’s easier for us to reach a consensus. Everyone in our house knows to put on a sweater or lined slippers if you’re a bit too chilly then.
If somebody mentions “New York,” without more, and lacking any additional context, I assume they mean NYC. Otherwise I’d expect them to say Albany, or Buffalo, or the Finger Lakes, or whatever.
I’m surprised The King’s Speech is leading the poll for the Best Picture Oscar Winner Most Seen By Dopers.
And Tolkien junkie that I am, I didn’t include Return of the King in my Top Three favorites of the 2000s. I think Fellowship is a better film.
Both excellent games. Those are what my family calls “Low Brain Games” - perfect palate cleansers between other games that take a lot more thought. Have you heard of/played “The Island of Doctor Lucky”? It’s one that I enjoy quite a bit.
I think we may need to talk about this at the get together on the 15th. Hubby’s been wanting to find like-minded gamer people. Sadly, he’ll still be in New Jersey on that day, but I’m good at being an information gatherer.
This is a favorite of mine. I’ve got 2nd and 3rd edition and many of the expansions. The only problem is that our table isn’t big enough to play and have room for our character stuff all the time.
We keep our temperature pretty stable all year round, more at Hubby’s insistence than mine. I can’t say I’m not happy with it, but I would probably set it a bit different and open windows more often.
As for the New York question… I grew up Upstate. New York will never mean just NYC. If I’m talking about NYC, I just say “the City”.
I had this in mind too when I made the poll. I went to college near Buffalo and will always see “New York” as being the overall state of NY and not just the big city.
