Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Re: “fungi”

In my head, I pronounce it FUN-gee, but I say FUN-guy aloud.

I’m a bit surprised that so far everyone has either been to the ocean or is Aquaman. I figured there would be a couple of people who were landlocked and didn’t have any desire to go.

I can’t remember ever hearing “fungi” pronounced “fun-gee.” The g may be hard or soft, but the i is a long i.

Of course it’s pronounced fun-guy. The joke wouldn’t make sense if it wasn’t.

I have seen Coneheads (which as admitted upthread, get’s grating extremely fast) and Wayne’s World 2. I also voted for Blues Brothers 2000, but mostly for the parts of the cast that were NOT Ackroyd. John Goodman, while far from perfect, showed a lot of love. And I enjoy Joe Morton in most of the things I’ve seen him in. We do not speak of child sidekicks in my house however.

Despite a mediocre plot and recycled gags though, it’s got fun, wonderful music. So while I don’t own a DVD of the movie, I do have a CD of the soundtrack. Which pushes it into the win category for me. Even if it’s a forced technicality.

…but the Atlantic wasn’t romantic…

I counted the Bosphorus as “Black Sea”, as it was close enough.

Yep. Although I did like Coneheads enough not to mind choosing it for #3. Wayne’s World 2 was very uneven, although it contains my favorite Charlton Heston role of all time.

Conversely I couldn’t make it through either Blues Brothers 2000 (despite the quality of the music) or Macgruber.

Yeah, I’m over the flash-bang-boom of fireworks, particularly as the quality of drone shows goes up and up. And they’re much less likely to traumatize housepets and any vets with PTSD.

Plus the Sea of Marmara! I’ve dipped my tootsies in that as well.

No Billy Ocean either.

“fung-guy”

As a kid I swam a few times every summer in the Atlantic from Maryland, Virginia, or Delaware beaches.

I spend a couple hundred hours every year wade-fishing the surf in the Gulf of Mexico, but I never swim in it. Usually it’s about waist deep, but I often shuffle through a chest deep gut to get from the second sand bar to the third, though none of that counts for the poll. My qualification for the poll is that I occasionally fish from my kayak in deeper water on very calm days. And once took my small outboard-powered jonboat through the breakers at the mouth of the Colorado River and fished about a half-mile offshore.

Exactly!

There are plenty of good movies with SNL alums (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Talladega Nights and Trading Places, first and foremost IMHO), but precious few good movies based on SNL sketches. I felt a little dirty having to pick three, frankly.

I am not now, nor have I ever been, either Aquaman or Sub-Mariner.

Nor am I, despite repeated testing when I drink a glass of water.

Fun - ji. Long i, soft g.

And I checked 10-50 in the flying poll, because I’m pretty sure it’s been more than ten times, and probably somewhere in the low teens; but it’s possible it was only 9. There were some places that I went to which sometimes I’d drive and sometimes I’d fly, and I no longer remember how many times I did which.

I always thought of Animal House and Caddyshack as SNL movies.

If you have been in, or sailed on, Billy Ocean, that may be worth its own thread.

Ditto

Agreed. And Animal House would have received a vote from me.

I think of them as being sort of SNL-adjacent, at least as far as type of humor, and that they both featured SNL stars. Animal House owed far more to National Lampoon: not only was it branded as a National Lampoon project, but two of the three film’s writers were on the Lampoon staff.

My ears used to be pierced, until they started getting enflamed. I’m allergic to most metals. On skin contact, my skin gets a bit red and itchy. But if it’s through the skin… not as bad as childbirth, but horribly painful anyway. It was really bad when I had the staples in for my first C-Secton.
