Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I enjoy Scottish bagpipes, but not as much as I enjoy Irish uilleann pipes.

TBH, “Amazing Grace” has never, ever worked for me, bagpipes or otherwise.

I don’t mind bagpipes but I don’t seek them out as over here in the U.S., we mainly only hear two tunes out of them and one is the dreadful Amazing Grace, the other is a marching tattoo that I never bothered to learn the name of. Please, players, play a different tune!

It worked in Star Trek II, mostly because it immediately followed Kirk almost breaking down in his eulogy and Sulu’s voice breaking when he called everyone to attention.

I once heard a bagpipe (band? brigade?) do “What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor?” It was fricken hilarious.

That’s like my fav bit of audacity: the Tubadours playing the theme song from The Magnificent Seven.

I like the pipes; and there’s a local band which I hear occasionally; but they’re not a huge part of my life. There didn’t seem to be an option for “I like them OK, especially outdoors and played skillfully”; so I didn’t vote.

Yeah, bagpipes are fun in moderate dosages. I have recordings of “Scotland the Brave” and “Mull of Kintyre” that I pull up every now and then when I’m in the mood.

“Amazing Grace,” however, is treacly religious glurge and I hate it.

You just won the thread. That is all kinds of awesome.

I like the bagpipes in moderation, although I do think “Amazing Grace” has unfortunately become a funeral cliche.

Well this is annoying. Apparently there’s no way to view the results of a “number rating” poll without voting in it, so I can’t see the results of my own polls for the streaming services I don’t subscribe to. And I don’t want to throw off the average by voting it them. Or is it just because no one has voted in them yet? Maybe I’ll be able to see the results once someone actually votes.

ETA: Ah, ok, now that people have voted I can view the results.

I’m not going to do the “How many shows on Netflix etc.” series because I’d rather push one of those elevator buttons and go to a nice floor, maybe the penthouse on the 49th.

I think I recognize some of the names; but I strongly suspect that, for instance, I’m thinking of the wrong Sutton. Anything to do with Sutton’s Spoons?

Didn’t vote.

Names I recognize, without having to look up any additional info:

  • Greg Landry: quarterback for the Detroit Lions in the 1970s
  • Gerry Cheevers: hockey player, might have played for the Boston Bruins
  • Ian Anderson: singer/flautist for the rock band Jethro Tull
  • Norris McWhirter: longtime co-editor, with his twin brother, of the Guinness Book of World Records
  • Robert Wadlow: one-time “world’s tallest man”

Didn’t recognize a single name.

Ian Anderson, Greg Landry, Franklin W. Dixon.

Surprised that more people did not know Dixon.

I recognised :-
Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull person.
R. Dean Taylor - house ghost person.
Robert Wadlow - tall person.
Norris McWhirter - guiness record book person.

For the record, that list of names is comprised of folks who had some meaning to Young Master Mustard.

And psst, @pjd, you are incorrect about R. Dean Taylor.

mmm

ETA:

I should have included a “none of them” option, sorry.

In my case, it’s because I don’t think I ever read a Hardy Boys book.

Another FYI, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that 96-year-old Phyllis Coates is alive and (presumably) well.

mmm

Actor who played Sargeant Carter on Gomer Pyle.

My favorite of the poop/movie title thread was not listed in the poll.
A Christmas Story

I don’t know why but that’s just funny.

Was I the only person who recognized Hugh Brannum as the real name of Mr. green Jeans from Captain Kangaroo?
