Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

We got one of those plastic dachshund skeleton figures from Target. We hang it with fishing line above our front door, so that it’s hanging in front of a dark brown wooden fascia board under the porch light.

It really looks like it’s floating there. We always get lots of comments on it.

We decorate for Halloween and Christmas, but nothing really over the top. Christmas is a string of colored lights along the front porch and a decorated tree and sometimes a small nativity scene inside. Because one of my kids went through a semi-goth phase and also enjoys end-of-season sales at craft stores, we’ve assembled an impressive collection of Halloween decorations, but I’m pretty lazy, so we just set them out on the porch - hanging spiders, a couple of ghouls, various skulls (lit and unlit), and raven figurines. The most elaborate decoration we do is a life-size witch we make by stuffing an old black t-shirt and leggings with newspaper, pinning a styrofoam head on top and old black slippers at the bottom, and covering it with a big witch hat and long cloak. It looks very impressive sitting in a chair by the door.

Lots of Christmas decorations in the house (including two Christmas trees), but nothing outside. Part of the issue is that we have an older house, which doesn’t have any electrical outlets on the exterior. In past years, I had strung some colored Christmas lights along the fence on the side of the house (plugged into an outlet in the detached garage), but last year, squirrels chewed the wires apart – apparently, many newer outdoor lights are made using a soy-based plastic, which squirrels find to be delicious. I’m not sure that I want to invest in a new set of lights, only to have the little beasts chew on them again.

We don’t really do any decorating for any other holidays beyond Christmas.

I had to change my answer to the football question after doing some googling. Apparently, NFL teams score a touchdown from a first-and-goal situation over 60% of the time. So statistically it’s better to be the team with the ball.

We have a skeleton we hang on the front door for Halloween and that’s it. We do minimal decorating for Christmas; a small fake tree and a door wreath - but that counts as “inside and out.” No other holidays.

Our Band’s biggest fundraiser by far is the flag subscription program. For $50/yr, we’ll install a flag in front of your house from dawn to dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans’ Day.

Over my objections, we sometimes have a christmas tree. Maybe every other year or so. (if the grandchildren are coming over, my wife wants a tree :frowning: )

Other than that, no holiday decorations. I have a really anti-holiday type of personality. In my view the effort vastly exceeds the reward. Vastly. (I’m looking at you, Thanksgiving dinner).

DS9 is my favorite Trek, but I have to say Strange New Worlds is making a run for it.

Of the names on the most recent list:

  • Zola Budd: barefoot Olympic distance runner, most famous here in the U.S. for colliding with Mary Decker during the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
  • Lev Parnas: Ukrainian/American businessman, associate of Rudy Giuliani.
  • Richard Kiel: Tall, threatening-looking actor, played the metal-toothed henchman “Jaws” in several James Bond movies
  • Ai Weiwei: Chinese artist and dissident

I haven’t known a single person on a single one of those lists.

Thanks. That name was familiar, but i didn’t vote for her because i couldn’t place who she was.

My current residence isn’t very conducive to decorating for the holidays. We are planning to relocate in a year or so and I hope it will be better suited to being decorated.

Same here. But I just don’t pay attention to names. For example, I’ve watched every episode of Modern Family (multiple times for most) and couldn’t name a single caset member.

Re: John_DiFool’s poll on sports figures (which is only single-choice), I recognize:

  • Burt Hooton (baseball pitcher)
  • Ingemar Stenmark (downhill skiier)
  • Franz Beckenbauer (football (soccer) player)
  • Danny Ongais (Indycar race driver)
  • Harry Gant (NASCAR race driver)
  • Jake Scott (football defensive back)

The only holiday we decorate for is xmas, since we host a party. Each year we decorate a bit less. We used to do a tree, but stopped that. Now it’s just some spotlights outside and various shiny things indoors.

The only remaining people whose eye color I know are my spouse, my sister, and myself. I just never really notice eye color, unless it’s brought up in conversation, and wouldn’t remember the color in a day or two.

We put a skeleton thingy on the front door for Halloween, mostly to advertise to trick-or-treaters (along with the porch light being on).

There is a cornucopia centerpiece for Thanksgiving, and a turkey-shaped crystal candy bowl in the living room.

We also put out a pumpkin or three (not carved jack-o’lanterns) and a couple of large potted mums as a general Fall display on the front porch. The pumpkins get tossed after Thanksgiving, but the mums are left in place until after Christmas. I usually plant them in the back yard sometime in January, but they never survive through the summer heat for a second Fall season

For Christmas I put white lights on several large bushes on the front and side of the house(corner lot). Inside we have a tree - artificial the last several years, and a small Nativity scene. My SO does red or green tablecloths and napkins in the dining room and kitchen, more candles than normal, and puts a lot of knick-knacky things around the house.

@John_DiFool You need to allow for more than one answer because I recognized several names but was only able to pick the name I’ve known since childhood: Danny Ongais.

Memory is funny. I did remember her as a South African distance runner, but I had forgotten about the Mary Decker incident. And yet, that’s probably the only reason I knew about her.

rrrrrrr redoing…

Without meaning to provoke any sort of quarrel, I do want to know what the motive is behind all these “list 20 obscure names and see if people recognize any” polls, that are quite repetitive.

Each to their own. I mean I find your polls uninteresting and repetitive and I don’t think I’ve ever voted in one.
