I put a jackolantern out for Halloween (usually at the last minute); put a menorah in the window for Hannukah, though I don’t celebrate it otherwise; and usually put something I call a solstice bush on the dining room table on winter solstice and leave it there till New Year’s.
I’m not at all sure whether any of those count as “decorating”, so I didn’t vote.
I simply did mine on a lark since nobody had done any athletes yet (I chose 1 per major sport or league). I selected ones which during their primes were definitely in the news and did win things and got press (mainly 60’s-80’s), so no obscure scrubs or journeymen. Surprised that Senor Dropshot, Manuel Orantes, has gotten zero recognition. No F1 fans either (Clay Regazzoni). I know being a big sports buff my entire life if someone tried to duplicate my poll with equivalent personalities it is highly likely I’d ace it.
Neither hard drinks nor softdrinks, at least usually. Water, coffee, or tea.
Both hard and soft science fiction. That’s a matter of how well the individual thing is written and what mood I’m in.
Either hard-shell or soft-shell tacos. Depends on what’s in them and what mood I’m in whether I want tacos at all, not whether they’re hard or soft shell.
Didn’t vote in any of those. I did vote that clowns aren’t really scary; but actually it depends on the clown.
I’m “meh” on the names polls because I’m not into them but presumably some other people are, so why shouldn’t people post the polls they’re interested in?
I don’t display the flag at home. I do sometimes wave one at protest marches.
You guys are making me feel much better about my half-assed gestures at holiday decorating. We have houses in the neighborhood that have the whole winter wonderland thing going from mid-November to New Year’s and others that look like a spooky movie set from now until Halloween, and all I do is plop some pre-made decorations out and turn on the strip of lights (Mr Legend got all excited about a set of programmable LED lights. We got some, tacked them onto the front fascia board under the eaves on the front of the house, and all we have to do is plug them in and program the colors and pattern we want. They’re very unobtrusive when they’re not lit, so we installed them permanently.)
I’m much more willing to decorate for holidays or seasons when all it involves is digging a couple of boxes out of the closet under the stairs and setting the contents out.
I’ll just point out that the Catch-22 character’s full name is John Yossarian. I just found it slightly jarring that he was only listed by last name while the rest were all first and last name.
It’s been ages since I read the novel, but from what Wikipedia says his first name isn’t revealed until fairly late in the story. So that is an understandable mistake to make. If memory serves in the Hulu miniseries he does introduce himself as “John Yossarian” at some point, though. Or maybe my memory is just faulty.
Huh, i read metamorphosis, and it may have had a greater impact on me than any of the others, but i don’t even recognize that name when it’s source is given.
Yeah, I recognized the name “Moriarty” as Holmes’s arch enemy, but I was unsure about the first name so I didn’t pick that one. And good thing I didn’t, because I was wrong about that one.
ETA: Gregor Samsa sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t place where the character was from. I never actually read Metamorphosis, but I probably picked up the character’s name from NPR or something.
Yeah, I didn’t vote in any of those either-or polls, because my choices fell outside the dichotomy.
I was kinda jazzed to see Esa Tikananen’s name after all these years. The man you love to hate. But the who-do-you-recognize polls are boring to me. Fine for those who like them.
We haven’t had a tree for Christmas since the 80s. Our townhouse is too small, and I hate cleaning up the needles. I do miss the smell. But my money manager’s Christmas/holiday gift is a live wreath which we put on the front door, so I get a whiff as I exit and enter.
I usually just skim through the Do You Recognize polls, and rarely bother answering, but if other people like them, fine. And I would like to thank @Mean_Mr.Mustard for giving an answer key for his.
There is a neighborhood in my town where people go wild with the Christmas decorations, and everybody competes to see who can put up the most extravagant light-show. But there is one house that is completely dark, except for one window, that has lights spelling out “Bah, Humbug”.
I’m trying to up the Christmas decor a bit every year as my kid gets older. Last year we got a tree, I got some poisenettas and a holiday arrangement with pine boughs. Maybe that’s sufficient, but I do want to share a little of this cheer with my kid, so that he has happy Christmas memories. We don’t go overboard on gifts so it’s nice just to have the ambiance.
ETA: My Christmas tree is neither Christmas nor a tree. It’s somewhere between Solstice and Hanukkah, and it’s cut evergreen branches stood in water in a fancy pitcher.
