I love going to a bar for Halloween and trying to guess who is not in costume, but just dressed oddly
I’ve generally just heard it called Halloween. (Either that, or I’m wrong about thinking that I do know what @Loach is talking about.)
Mischief night or devils night is the day before Halloween. I never heard of it until I was into advanced adulthood.
I heard of it from The Crow.
OK, thanks. I don’t know whether I should change my vote; I’d heard or more likely seen somewhere a couple of the terms, but had misunderstood what they meant.
Same here. Which is played at my house almost ever 10/30 that rolls around.
We had “cabbage night” when i was a kid. But it wasn’t as destructive as some of the versions I’ve heard of since. Mostly, kids took toilet paper and threw it into trees, and similar.
I don’t need or want caffeine in the morning, unless (very rarely) I’m having breakfast in a diner, in which case I’ll have some coffee, please, with plenty of sugar.
My wife and I split our household laundry duties pretty much 50-50. I don’t mind ironing my dress shirts, although I do regularly send some out for dry cleaning, and my suits and sport coats, when needed.
I really could take or leave asparagus. I used to hate it with a passion; now I’ll eat it if it’s presented to me. And what the hell, it’s good for me: Top 7 Health Benefits of Asparagus
I invariably use blue ink pens, and I particularly like Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens. A beautiful color and it feels good in my hand as the ink takes to the page.
I’ll vote for Biden because I’m a loyal Democrat and because he’s 'waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than any Republican likely to get the GOP nomination next year. I can’t say I’m filled with enthusiasm, though. He’s done some great things in his first term, but he’s very old and doesn’t seem all that sharp mentally anymore. I also think Kamala Harris has the potential to be a good President if, God forbid, he dies in his second term.
Maybe i should have voted “depends on the brand of yogurt”, rather than “depends on the kind”. I like most plain, unsweetened, whole milk yogurt. But only a few brands do that. I also like some of the flavored & sweetened stuff, but some is too sweet, some of too gooey, and there i do look at the brand. So, dunno.
Mostly, i eat the stuff my husband makes.
I like regular yogurt. I don’t like the Greek, the texture seems wrong to me. I like plain, vanilla, and coffee; I would like fruit flavors but they’re just about always too sweet for me, whatever brand they are, so I make my own by mixing fruit into vanilla yogurt. I prefer full-fat cream on top but will eat other versions as far as that factor goes. I don’t want extra crap in there – give me no artificial sweeteners and no artificial flavors and no extra thickeners, artificial or otherwise. Yogurt ought to thicken from the cultures, not from mixing additional stuff in there.
I eat quite a bit of the stuff; but that seemed to come under “Depends on the kind.” I do favor some brands but there’s several of them and I’m happy to try a new local brand, they’re usually good.
I voted take it or leave it for Halloween. Yes, I kinda like the day itself- i put on a sorta costume (Indy this year) and hand out treats. We decorate. Fun, but of a mild sort, as Twain once put it.
But it is the run-up to Halloween I DESPISE,
I hate hate hate modern Horror films, and during October I am constantly bombarded by ads and FB posts about them.
I ate a fair bit of yogurt in my, uh, salad days and developed a decided preference for one brand over the other. The Yami brand was pre-stirred which made it disgustingly homogenous. The other brand, which I think was sort of local, had stuff on the bottom of the carton, which you had to stir into the yogurt, giving it a much nicer marbled quality.
For yogurt I’m torn. The types I enjoy I tend to avoid, because it’s got a solid bit of calories - full fat, mildly sweet, made with real fruit. It’s a dessert, and I treat it as such, but there are other desserts with just as many calories that I like more.
The various low fat, low sugar, low carb, low XYZ options generally taste of all the stuff they put in to compensate, so they’re not much of an advantage.
So mostly I use full fat plain yogurt as a cooking medium - add lemon juice and Tandoori spices and marinate chicken. Add mint, garlic, cucumber and lemon juice, and marinate pork for a tzatziki-flavored kabob. Mix with smoked paprika, garlic, onion and hot-sauce, marinate chicken, and press the chicken in crushed cornflakes or panko, spritz with olive oil, and toss in air fryer for semi-fried chicken.

So mostly I use full fat plain yogurt as a cooking medium…
That is my fave, with blueberries., but to eat not cook with Or that overpriced Oui.
However, that recipe sounds delicious.
Generally, you only need about one two cups worth or so for most of the options I mentioned above. Sure, it’s also added calories, but so are various oil based marinades or FSM forbid, marinating / simmering sauces, with a lot less stuff and a whole lot less sugar!
But the results taste great! And even at current prices, a 32oz container of full fat plain yogurt is maybe the cost of a single bottle of such pre-made sauces. And I’ll get at least 3 such preps out of one container. It would be MORE of course, but sometimes I’ll make additional tandoori or tzatziki sauce for serving as was as marinating.
And a yogurt marinade does a damn good job in my experience of tenderizing as well - so helps flavor, tenderize and moisten dryer cuts of pork like the lower fat loins / half loins I see on sale.
Despite all of that though, yeah, calories and fat. So depending upon your diet, dinner beware!
I am very surprised that more than half of those voting do not know of a name for the day before Halloween. It was inspired by a local article that said most of the state calls it Mischief Night but there are small pockets call it Goosey Night or Cabbage Night. I had never heard those terms before. The rest of the list came from the Wikipedia article that lists names from other parts of the country.
Mischief Night is the night before Halloween when kids (who don’t have good parental supervision) go out and prank random strangers and perform various acts of vandalism and criminal mischief. It used to be just about the busiest day to be a cop but around my area it has died down. Everyone still knows what it is.
Yogurt WAS a staple of mine, for many years, with fruit and granola/cereal mixed in. Say what you will about Publix, but up until I moved from Florida they would regularly have buy one/get one free sales, maybe about once a month, would always stock up. Since I’ve moved to Ohio tho I haven’t found a chain that does that-at best I can hope for maybe a dollar, dollar and a half off a pack of four for c. $4.75 - $1.50 = $3.25, and they have proved to be much fewer and farther between. So switched to lowfat lactose-free milk for my dairy fix-I can get a dozen bowls of cereal out of one half-gallon.

I’ve never lived anywhere where there was anything special about the day before Halloween. I’m mildly surprised to discover that there is. Halloween itself is a “day before”, after all – it’s right there in the name.
“There’s an old man sittin’ next to me, makin’ love to his tonic and gin”
I think this is a great line, from a great song.
“When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray”
One of my favorite lines.
