Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

Yeah. I was thinking “meh” at first but then I thought “maybe the artist deliberately wants you to not be thinking in terms of numbered pages” and then changed it to no, not all right.

If the book’s a math textbook, or a book of recipes, or even a history text, I might think differently. Though I still wouldn’t write in the library’s copy. I might write in my own.

My shower has at least a dozen streams.

???

I want to be pounded hard…by my shower

What?

@Fear_Itself: You forgot, I don’t watch Christmas movies and television specials.

I think I’ve seen a couple of them, at some point. They weren’t anything I’d want to watch repeatedly. And although our by-now-thoroughly-mixed family does, sort of, celebrate Christmas, that sort of thing has never been one of the family traditions.

Me, too.

And I’m another for "sometimes watch Christmas movies, but don’t have a custom of watching any particular Christmas movie every year. "

There needs to be an “I frakking HATE Christmas, Christmas music, Christmas movies, Christmas anything!” option.

There are no Christmas movies I watch as a tradition but there are several on there I’ve watched multiple times.

I will engage in political talk here from time to time but not in real life. I hate arguing politics with people.

I’ll discuss politics IRL with people I know and trust, an generally have about a 60-70% overlap on POV with. It’s the bits that don’t overlap which can be fun. I’ll discuss politics online with individuals that can bring facts to the party, even if I don’t agree with them, but we have to be able to agree on facts/reality to do so.

I don’t discuss politics IRL much because I don’t know and trust a ton of people, and some that I do are lost to the facts/reality portion. And I don’t -try- with new people because it’s become so polarized, and the MAGA movement is so prone to verbal and physical violence that it’s honestly scary.

When it comes to debating most subjects, I don’t consider myself particularly well qualified, and would regard doing so, even with laypeople as a disservice. The value of one’s opinions should be directly related to their expertise and experience.

Liked “There needs to be an “I frakking HATE Christmas, Christmas music, Christmas movies, Christmas anything!” option.”

I like Christmas. I like the idea of peace on Earth and good will towards others. I love traditional choral music.

I dislike Hallmark Christmas.

I voted both “I don’t avoid them” and “other” because it depends on who the discussion’s with, how the discussion’s going, and the mood I’m in. Anybody who reads P&E here knows I don’t always avoid them; and I don’t always avoid them IRL; but I often avoid them in real life and sometimes avoid them here.

Huh?

If you post on one of my threads (because of that one poll, no value judgement, at all) and don’t cotton to it, read another. You may like …NM. Read what you want.

There wasn’t an option for “sometimes i do discuss politics”.

And i haven’t timed myself holding my breath for decades. But i guess i can still go for more than a minute. I was lying still while i did it, and took a couple of deep breaths first. But i got to over a minute and wasn’t feeling desperate to breath, yet.

I used to be able to get to well over a minute.

Another ability of my youth has left me! I only managed 45 seconds.

In my youth, I could hold it for over two minutes. I would try to hold my breath while Kirk saved the whales at the end of Star Trek IV. I could also swim a full lap (50 yards) under water. And I was smoking at that point in my life!

Tonight I managed one minute eighteen seconds.

A minute 22 just now. Better than I expected.

This dude, who should know, is completely correct in his opinion: Bruce Willis officially declares that Die Hard is not a Christmas movie

For our long-running discussion of this vitally-important issue: Is "Die Hard" a Christmas Movie?

There are quite a few Christmas movies I’ve seen over the years, but there are none I’d want to watch every single year. That would be boring. Some of my favorites, though: It’s a Wonderful Life, Love Actually and A Christmas Carol (the George C. Scott version first and foremost; Michael Caine and the Muppets second).

Without taking a particularly deep breath beforehand, I timed myself and found I could hold my breath for just past a minute. When I was younger, I often swam underwater and could hold it for a good bit longer.

We almost always watch the animated Christmas specials for nostalgia’s sake, but if we missed them, it wouldn’t bother me. I can take or leave Christmas movies in general.

I just held my breath for 65 seconds. When I was a kid, I used to practice holding my breath underwater, but I’m surprised I can still go that long.

As for political debates, I’ve just lost almost all desire to talk about it. Positions are so passionate and so hardened that you can start with reasoned debate and find yourself in the middle of an acrimonious brawl in the blink of an eye.
