Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

The key question is whether one commonly flew overseas. If yes, they probably have flown a wide variety of wide-body jets. If not, domestic US flights are virtually all narrow-body nowadays.

Lufthansa loved (still loves?) 747s for US-Germany flights, and I’ve been on plenty of those going back to the 70s. The rows at the back had like 13 seats each.

I’ve been on 5 747s, across two trips. The first was when my former employer sent me to India. San Francisco - Frankfurt - Bangalore, and Bangalore - Frankfurt were all on Lufthansa 747-400s. There would have been a fourth 747 flight in there, but the return flight was late and I missed my connecting flight, so I ended up on a United 777 instead.

The other two were LAX-SYD and back on Qantas.

I’m surprised someone picked “I don’t know” for the Concorde poll. How could you not know you were on a Concorde? It was the world’s only supersonic airliner, so I’m pretty sure you’d know if you were on one. And I’m pretty sure you had to specifically book the Concorde flight as opposed to the regular subsonic flight.

On a different subject, seriously, you guys voted to give up backup cameras? As I said before, they’re a safety feature. Like seat belts, you might not think you need them… until you do. People have run over children because they couldn’t see them playing in the driveway behind their car. Those are the kinds of accidents backup cameras are meant to prevent. I never expected to use this phrase, but think of the children.

I did NOT vote to give up backup cameras. That would have been the last feature of have kept, much as I like my intermittent wipers.

We’re not actually giving up back up cameras. It’s just a poll. We’re saying perhaps we value other features more on a day to day basis.

Me either.

I know that, obviously. But I was a little surprised that the plurality of voters in the poll apparently value convenience more than safety. Which made me wonder if there might be some misunderstanding as to why backup cameras exist.

Some of us don’t have backup cameras to give up

Maybe they were very young?

Yeah, I guess I took a vote for backup cameras as meaning you wouldn’t want one on a new car if you don’t have one now.

Some of my happiest early childhood memories are of the 747. I actually once cried at age 4 or 5 because I did not want to get off the plane. My father had to carry me out on his shoulders. This was after a United Airlines flight from Taipei to San Francisco.

I don’t; but I presumed I was voting, not on what I actually had, but on what I’d have if given the choice.

I wonder whether that affected the vote, though.

Whereas i had to make an emergency exit (down the slides!) of a 747 when i was twelve. I didn’t love the plane before that, and it made me uncomfortable after that. I will not mourn it.

This is how I feel, and the stark choices in the poll prevented me from choosing anything.

Since I’m retired, I rarely wear makeup anymore. But I never went to work without light foundation, blush, eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick – all applied with a light hand. It took me a while, but I finally got used to my naked face. I even go out in public!

I voted Yes for the “airbags deployed” option, even though they didn’t. They hadn’t been invented yet! I also voted Yes for the “Boat” option. Although I wasn’t technically on the boat when it sank, I was wearing a vest when I hit the water.

There was an earthquake in the DC area about 10 years ago. I was at work at the time. Had to evacuate the building. It took way longer than it should have for people to realize what was happening. There wasn’t any damage even though the building has a lot of glass.

We had to evacuate our building during the 2001 (or 2002) earthquake in the Puget Sound area. (but that’s just prudent behavior. The building was undamaged) I once had to evacuate a building in D.C. (near the White House) due to a bomb scare (not a drill, but not a real threat–in retrospect)

My recruiter tried very hard to convince me to wear makeup for the interview. I said i wasn’t willing to wear it to work, so if they didn’t want a women with a naked face, they may as well turn me down at the interview.

I voted “none” in the evacuation poll, but I have evacuated buildings at times that were not drills, but turned out to be false alarms, including a few hoax bomb threats in high school. But I don’t think that’s what was meant by “not a drill”.

I had the same sort of experience – in '94, I hit a deer in my car while doing about 50mph. Airbags existed back then, but my older car didn’t have them (but if it had, they definitely would have gone off).
