Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

We only started to need to dial the area code for local numbers quite recently – I think it was last year.

The poll did specify D&D style role-playing, but yeah, there’s overlap.

“You got your role-playing in my Porn! YOU got your porn in my role-playing!”

Heh. Of course, slightly different varieties, but sometimes not so much so.

When I moved to the Houston metro in 1997 we were already dialling all 10 digits. Where I grew up in Western PA we didn’t even have to dial all 7 digits until I was in 9th grade, ca 1983.

With sufficient immersion (and copious amounts of beer/tequila) I can converse in Mexican Spanish. Well, Spanglish. It gets the job done. I doubt a person from Seville would understand a bit of it.

I took “none of the above” to apply to all three language polls, not just to the last batch in the alphabetical order, so didn’t choose it. Somebody either took it to apply only to the last batch, or had someone translate the polls for them. Or, I suppose, can converse in written English but not in the spoken version, and took the word to mean spoken only.

ETA: I also took ‘converse reasonably well’ to mean a whole lot more French than I’ve got.

NOTA applies to all 3, as per my previous predilections there.

Aarrgghh, puzzlegal is correct.

Polls 1&2 are flawed, because they don’t include a “none of these” option. That’s super annoying if you want to see what languages other dopers speak. And also, you need to guess how many people just skipped poll 2. (This being an English language site, I’m assuming everyone who might read that thread can converse in English.)

Endorsed.

I have to use the area code for every phone call I make, plus, I have to “dial” 1 first.

I think that the Door made some great brilliant stuff over a very short band life vs the Eagles who made a lot of good stuff over IIRC much longer. So I couldnt pick. One song? Doors. Entire collection? Eagles.

I have Feelings about the Eagles as a band, even though they did produce some really catchy tunes. There’s just something so…smarmy? I’m not sure what it is, but it keeps me from thinking of them as a band I really like. I surprised myself by realizing I do like the Cars more than the Police. I really like both, but I’ll never forget seeing the Cars open for Styx and wishing they could have played longer.

We’ve just started having to always dial the area code here (I believe it dates from when the 988 suicide prevention hotline debuted, so it’s in a worthy cause). I thought it was going to be annoying to remember, but we all use cellphones now, so aside from updating one or two numbers, I’ve hardly noticed.

And, to my shame, English is the only language I can really converse in. I understand a reasonable amount of Spanish, and I can make myself understood to some extent in it, but I’ve had enough comical misunderstandings when trying to actually communicate complex thoughts that I know conversation is not an option.

A bunch of extremely skilled studio musicians put together a bunch of extremely skilled songs, and yet I can’t help thinking of them as “content“.

I also surprised myself by picking the cars over the police. That definitely wouldn’t have happened in the 80s.

I never cared for the Police for some reason. They were of my time, and I like most of the other groups that were of that genre, but I never connected with their music. Sting’s voice may have had something to do with it.

mmm

I like the first two Police albums well enough, the ones that have more of a garage-band feel. After that, I’m less than enamored of them.

Various sources (including a two-part documentary film about the band) have indicated that at least two of the band’s members – Don Henley and Glenn Frey – were raging assholes, and there was always a tremendous amount of strife going on within the band.

It being the 1970s, there was also a whole lot of drug use going on, which also likely didn’t help.

The fact that they were able to produce some exceptional music, despite all of that, is probably a testament to their collective musical talent.

Here too, entirely because of the 988 suicide prevention initiative

I have nothing against the Cars’ music, but hold a personal grudge.
I high school crush of mine was a big Cars fan. She went to a concert and engaged in some post-show groupie type activities. She was a minor at the time. Never sat right with me.

Yeah, I think that was the explanation given.

Worth it, if it helps.

Wow. I’ve had to dial the area code for decades.

I mean, I get that it is easier to just casually copy out of that list, but “Simplified” and “Traditional” Chinese are orthographic distinctions which have nothing to do with the spoken language. And spoken Chinese is not a language but about two dozen dialects which have many grammatical similarities and a few differences but enough disparity in tone and utterance that a person whose first language is Shanghai dialect will not at all be able to understand spoken Cantonese, neither of which can be understood by someone who only speaks Mandarin.
