Sorry I forgot to include retired.
I have rarely or never tasted most of the carbonated beverages listed. I hardly ever drink ‘em, but my favorites are root beer and ginger ale.
I, too, was sad that ginger ale didn’t make the list. It’s far and away my favorite soda.
I have a friend who used to work for a high tech firm (not in silicon valley) who said his vacation package was “take as much as you need but don’t be needy”.
My vacation is PTO - vacation and sick time combined.
Since I do not call in sick, I get 7 weeks vacation every year.
mmm
I work retail, and we accrue vacation time as we work. I think I average about 2 weeks a year? Maybe? I don’t really know because I generally just take a day or three here and there.
We get 48 hrs of sick time, renewed annually.
I’d forget where I worked in seven weeks.
Mine is negotiated. Company shuts down 8 days a year, Christmas and July 4th, so we’re forced to take those. I generally take 1-2 more weeks/year, but I don’t want to be visibly missing too much. I’m 60 and there’s super bad age discrimination in tech.
Functionally retired (actual separation date is the 31st in that I have no classes scheduled or desired in 2023).
My work as a psychotherapist was self-employed, so as much or as little vacation as I wanted.
My work as faculty had some sick accrual but one doesn’t take vacation during the term. Technically I was on for 9 months, but functionally academic breaks of about 5 weeks were fair game. Summers that I didn’t teach in were not on contract, so 3 months “off” prepping classes and working my other job.
My work as a writer is self-employed and neither especialy pays nor has vacation tme.
Semi retired, working part time, and happily my employer seems to value my expertise.
I’ve got a hard limit of 320 hours accrued for annual leave. I’ve been at the limit for a while. I can’t go over the cap so if I don’t use about 4 hours every week I lose it. I go in to the office three days a week and telework the other two. I go home a couple of hours early on my office days, just to be out in front of most of the traffic.
I’m at a point in my career where I can take pretty much as much vacation time as I want - but I rarely do, because the work is so interesting and so many people are depending on me.
I get 20 days vacation a year. There are a few other days I get off but they aren’t categorized as vacation. It’s a little misleading because I work 4 days on 4 days off so if I take 4 vacation days it’s actually 12 days off. They are “use or you get in trouble” days. We can’t carry over any vacation and you have to take them.
I posted the poll because one of the conditions of my new promotion was an extra week’s paid vacation a year. Vacation accrual is based on seniority and I’ve been around 7 years (the top tier being 10 years) and I sat down and crunched the numbers and I will now get four weeks a year not counting holidays. It is the most I’ve ever had, so I was curious how typical it was.
Other: Dr. Brown’s Ginger Ale.
I chose Vernor’s for the second poll, but I think they changed their formula quite a while back to make it less bitey. It’s sweeter than I remember from ages ago, and it makes me sad.
That’s why I chose Reeds. I miss the old Vernor’s too.
Does Canada Dry even have any ginger in it?
Re: the vacation poll; when employed, I’ve rarely had vacation time because I’ve been a contractor for years. At the beginning of the pandemic, I finally got a regular job, only to be laid off when they closed the division so they could take a pandemic tax break. Currently unemployed. Depending on the contract job, I have been able to negotiate time off but it was almost always without pay.
Prior to my promotion I was hourly and while I accrued some vacation time, many times I would just put in fewer hours and not get paid. My husband works for himself, so any time off he gets is a significant hit to our income that month. I think now that I am full time and getting full paid vacation, his time off won’t affect our bottom line as much.
“Mr Purple People Eater, what’s your line?”
He said, “Eatin’ purple people and it sure is fine!”
Because of my age, I am now at 30 days of vacation per year. In 2023 I will take a once-a-decade sabbatical of 2 months, of which only one is paid, so I will have a total of 50 paid vacation days. That’s not including sick days.
Regarding Shakshuka, I’ve never had it, and would like to try to make it, but it would probably be better if someone with more experience would make it.
I haven’t had Vernors for a long time, but I used to get one or two cans from my mother’s stash that she would bring back from Ohio. Now I rarely drink sugary beverages, but I won’t say no to a good root beer.
