Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

That makes sense. I can never get a precise point on a touchscreen, and half the time do something entirely different than what I meant to do.

But I do the erase-all-the-characters thing on a desktop, also. And I’m entirely capable of either hitting the back arrow or getting the right insertion point with the mouse.

I do too, sometimes, but not always, so I didn’t vote. And I’m honestly not sure what the exact determining factors are.

I do not. I isolate the error and correct it, not obliterate the entire sentence, because I am not a psychpath.

All those poor words and punctuation that deserved to live… washed away, like tears in rain.

For me it depends on the interface, how far I’ve gotten past the error and which neurons decided to fire at that moment

I miss the Bon.

But they had their minds uploaded into their duplicates! Didn’t you know?

I don’t know who Harris is going to pick, and think more than one of those choices is quite possible.

I’m pretty sure she has to choose just one, but I like the thought… Shapiro and Kelly for co-VP!

Not what I meant – I meant that while I think some of those choices are more likely than others, there are several that I think are individually quite possible.

But that would be an interesting idea! – I’m now trying to think of how to word the language for the constitution of a society with one president and multiple vices. They’d have to have an order of succession . . .

I have no idea whom she will pick. But if Shapiro helps her take Pennsylvania, that would be my choice.

My thoughts exactly.

mmm

I am getting close to retirement but have stayed on due to extreme staffing issues in my agency. This is without any increase in pay!

If they offered me such an increase I might stay for another year lol.
That would be if my health is stable and able to withstand the stress of another added year.

Same. Either way, he puts the lid down, as do I.

My parents find it strange that I put the lid down - I didn’t get the habit from them.

Regarding working another year (or two or …), it depends on many factors. If I were to retire due to health reasons, I wouldn’t work a day more. But if I were to retire just because I’m some magic age, I would definitely be willing to work a year or two. But not too much longer, as I want to be healthy and young enough to enjoy my retirement.

I could not care less which state a candidate for president/VP is from. I’d rather a candidate who represents my views, from any state, than a Texan candidate whom I disagree with.

I recently retired. I would have stayed another year if I was able to change my shift. I couldn’t so I left. If I was getting 4x more to stay I would have been willing to move in there.

If the typo is on the same line (or only a dozen or so characters back), I’ll delete all the characters back to the error and fix it. If I’ve been typing for a while, I’ll use spell correct on the highlighted words.

One of the reasons I backspace to a typo is that about half the time I end up rewording the phrase I backspaced over.

I think the the “home state advantage” of a vice presidential candidate is exaggerated. This study seems to back it up:

Presidential Versus Vice Presidential Home State Advantage: A Comparative Analysis of Electoral Significance, Causes, and Processes, 1884-2008

Abstract: This study compares the electoral significance, causes, and processes associated with presidential versus vice presidential home state advantages. Our analysis of presidential election returns from 1884 through 2008 demonstrates that presidential candidates generally receive a large, statistically significant home state advantage. However, vice presidential home state advantages are statistically negligible and conditioned on the interactive effect of political experience and state population. Furthermore, the results indicate that the mobilization of new voters primarily accounts for presidential home state advantage, while vice presidential home state advantage is mainly due to the conversion of existing voters. Although home state advantages do occur in presidential elections, according to our analysis a presidential or vice presidential home state advantage has not changed the outcome of any presidential election since 1884.

Given the polling trends, I’d bet that the Harris campaign is looking for a candidate that won’t interfere with the current positive perception of Harris, not some potential single state help.

Regarding the retirement thread: I am, pretty much, facing this exact question right now.

A year ago, I resigned from the ad agency where I’d been working, to take a different job at a smaller agency. That new job turned out to not be what was promised, and they eliminated my job this past June.

Two weeks ago, former colleagues at my previous job reached out to me, asking me if I’d be interested in coming back, to work on my previous client (the clients loved me, and apparently still talk about me in “we really miss Kenobi” terms). I’ve agreed to do so, and now it’s a question of “for how long.” My financial planner tells me that, if I can work for two more years, I can very comfortably retire, so my plan for how long I’ll stay once I start back at my old agency is “no more than two years.”

It’s the “4X your salary” bit that sold me. I’m contemplating retirement, and have enough years in that I can do it any time. If 3rd period pisses me off one day, I’m out the door! But wave 4 times my salary under my nose and I’ll put up with just about anything. That kind of dosh kicks my retirement plans to a whole different level. Reup for 3 years easy.

It’s a purely hypothetical question for me. And, as a hypothetical, I couldn’t answer it without some additional information—things like, in this hypothetical situation, how much do I enjoy (or at least not mind) my job, and how much do I need/want the extra money?

With my keyboard, all the backspaced-over characters go back into the keyboard’s storage area where they take their turn waiting to be typed again. Or, that’s what I tell myself so I don’t feel bad. :hugs:
