I mostly agree with this, except that the modern clickbait titles (and this is common to even so-called “quality” reporting often) is that I’d likely say “Oh this is worth reading” and it’s just a title plus a summary of three other previous articles with half a paragraph of “new” information. Or similar issues where it’s 80% recycled content that’s tied to a half-related “new” event which I’m interested in, but they don’t actually have much info past “it happened”.
Breaking news has been quite a scam recently for free/limited articles.
I do have a fix, but I wonder very much how soon they’ll kill it…
For over a decade (and I’ve mentioned it here before) I have used lite.cnn.com for a lot of my news reading. Because it’s very lightweight for a website, almost entirely text-based, it’s easier for me to read. Originally it was designed for people to get their news in low-bandwidth scenarios, such as after a major local disaster and I always used it for testing if you had NO internet or just SLOW internet. If this didn’t load, the answer was probably none.
But the articles/headlines don’t update as much, and they’re often a bit less detailed that the main page. But if all you want is free quick headlines, enjoy it up until CNN decides to kill it.
I think I’m safe sharing it here (for those who didn’t know) because our userbase is unlike to add enough users to make them hurry up and kill it - but who knows!
I dont like the idea of being forced to pay for a sub for a single article posted on a news aggregator. Sure, if I wanna read the NYT, (fat chance in hell, traitors) e.g. I would pay for it. But if there is gonna be a link to a single article, that should be free.
The only news I pay for (reluctantly) is the websight for the local statewide newspaper. I hate paying for it because the state of newspapers means they have very few reporters and do a poor job. Almost all of their hard hitting exposés are the result of one person sitting at a desk going through statistics. No digging for sources and finding news. But still it’s my only choice for any sort of local news since the TV is dominated by New York. I hear more about the mayor of NYC than all of my state’s government combined. The problem with paying for CNN is I do like having them as a source but I prefer to look at multiple sources across the spectrum. CNN is only one of them. I can’t pay for all of it.
I’m not sure how to reply to the latest Trump poll. What is meant by “post?” Post here or everywhere one could post? Post election regardless of the outcome I expect my interest in the P/E forum will mostly go away. I don’t post about politics anywhere else. I expect there to be little to no change as to how I post.
I don’t post much about Trump specifically, but if he gets elected, I expect I’ll be posting about what he’s doing, which will amount to posting about him. Whereas, if praise DOYC he doesn’t get elected, I hope to have little or no reason to post about anything he’s doing; at least, once we get past inauguration day.
I’m assuming the election bet poll includes some sort of coercion because I wouldn’t bet five dollars on the election.
Nate Silvers recent comments pretty much summed up how I feel about it. I think it’s 50-50. I wouldn’t be surprised with either outcome. My gut is saying it will be a Trump victory, but I certainly won’t put any money on it let alone all of my assets. That’s without any possible shenanigans.
I know what they are, but I didn’t know them by that name. My younger sister worked in L&D for years, so she would tell me stories. I think it’s kinda pathetic.
I ordered on item from Temu several years ago. It was crap, and not even worth the low low price. Never bought anything else from them.
As for CNN, I never watch them directly (might click on links I see), so I’d never pay for a subscription.
The blue/red question is a standard Prisoner’s Dilemma. It’s not iterated, so the “rational” move is to choose red; choosing blue cannot produce a better outcome for the individual, and might produce a worse outcome. But when the stakes are this high, other considerations (such as not being partially responsible for the death of billions of people) come into play.
