Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

I’m not a Go To Rallies and Protests person.

I’m going to this one on the 14th. It’s so, so important to show up.

My wife and I were on the fence about going on June 14 due to various real life complications and concerns. Then LA. Now we’re absolutely going. YMMV.

Actually it is an official No Kings protest; while it’s publicized by (among others) the people I was thinking of, it’s sponsored by a different group.

had not even heard of this protest until this thread

Yep, First time I saw one when i was deep sea fishing in SoCal, and someone hooked one, and the deckhands said to carefully dehook and throw it back- it was strongly protected in CA.

I’m not really a Goes to Protests person either, but even if I wanted to I can’t make it, because I will be traveling that day.

Same here! There’s one half a mile from my house, at the same location as the April 5th Hands Off protests, which I also heard of from this thread.
And it’s at a good time for me to attend; I’m in town and don’t have other commitments.

On the X/Y poll, this is somewhat answering a different question: while thinking about it, I kept going back to a movie instead, the original Star Wars, Luke and Leia kissing, and then of course we discover they’re brother and sister. In that case, even the author seemed clueless. So…back to the actual question…I don’t know how to think about authorial intent, but if he’s going to swing the whole canon around with a sequel, I’ll likely go with it.

I’m probably going to wind up with both conclusion X and conclusion Y in my head; which wasn’t one of the options. Didn’t vote.

– it might also depend on how firmly I was holding conclusion X: is it really the only one I can imagine making sense, or was it just my best guess as to what would happen?

For X/Y, I voted X - X - Y. There are plenty of authors who don’t always fully plan stuff out, or write in a consistent manner, so if I’m judging it entirely on the basis of a stand alone work (the first two scenarios, even if the second has a later retcon), then I’ll go with what makes the most sense for me.

For the third scenario, well then, I’ll accept Y as the intent, and look at X as a missed opportunity that would have made more sense. But it’s fully possible in fandom that the author will support whatever side is going to give them the most future investment. And there are authors who admit later that what they ended up doing made little sense, and that they should have gone the other route.

See Rowling’s (whatever you think of her as a person being irrelevant to this particular point) regrets and back and forth about her romantic pairing of Ron and Hermione vs Harry.

@Frodo You answered Y for question 1 and X for question 2, was this deliberate?
If so I’m interested why the presence of a sequel contradicting it cements your opinion on your original thought?

No, hehe, I got totally confused and realized it too late.

You can always change your vote - there is no time limit.

Wait, you can? I thought it was fixed.
I’ll try to fix it then.

Why is the poll public in the first place?

Why is a lion yellow?

Because he’s cowardly

No, that’s why he’s yaller.

The breakfast question is structured completely wrong. I eat the same thing for breakfast most days. Except when I’m traveling, which happens a lot. Or sometimes if i have company, which is a bit less common. Or we are out of an element of it…

But it’s not as if i eat a different thing on Sundays. And does anyone have a breakfast they eat Monday& Tuesday? Who eats the same thing two days a week, regularly?

I guess when i commuted i had a regular home breakfast and a regular work breakfast. But then the would have been two regular breakfasts…

Because it’s the sort of poll where it’s interesting how people answered, and there’s nothing private about it?
