Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

The magnets hold up all of my upcoming appointments which are written on different colored note cards with black magic marker.

The best pie crust I ever made was with broken-up pretzels. It went perfectly with the peanutbutter chiffon filling.

Ah, but are those notes Pulitzer material?

Not currently but I could work on that…notecards are small and abbreviations can somethings be hysterically funny especially when written with a black magic marker.

Depends on how you make your pies. My pie crusts are weighted by their contents; I don’t bake them separately.

Yikes!

It’s possible that if I’d actually tasted that I would have liked it. Going by the description, however, I’m pretty dubious.

It probably doesn’t help that I don’t much like pretzels.

The category I think I’d have the best chance of winning wasn’t one of the options:

Great Long Complicated Lists.

Pretty sure my self-published book about franchises will not win a Pulitzer, but it should.

It was sugar, butter and small broken pieces of pretzels (not crushed to a powder, that would be wrong), a unique balance of sweet and salty, and an excellent contrast to the delicate creaminess of the filling. Everyone who tried it was impressed (it originally came from a Birdseye recipe, many decades ago).

That’s not a flavor profile i would choose, either. But it does sound like the crust should go really well with the filling.

Despite frequently baking pies (there’s a fresh strawberry rhubarb pie in the fridge) and having the equipment, i almost never use pie weights. I’ve recently started using convection for the first 10 minutes of baking, and that seems to help crisp up the bottom. I’m thinking if upgrading from glass to steel pie plates, but probably won’t bother.

There are no magnets on my refrigerator because they don’t stick. But I really hate the cluttered look of stuff all over the outside of refrigerators, so I wouldn’t have any even if they could stick.

I’ve never done that for a pie crust, but I find coarsely crushed, slightly stale Snyder sourdough pretzels make an amazing replacement for panko (or other coarse) breadcrumbs on a lot of fried foods.

I briefly dated a Pulitzer prize winning

…& I’ve cooked pullet surprise

NOTA. I’ve never seen the movie, but vampires are right there in the trailer.

Was completely surprised at the FDTD plot switch.

I only caught it on cable, having never seen the trailer, so I was rather surprised to see bloodsuckers leaping about. While a fun romp, it has zero dramatic depth (ok, aside from getting the preacher to get his holy mojo back), and I have often wondered if it could have successfully gone in a more realistic direction.

I voted ) in the Grrr poll for obvious reasons.

If I’m baking homemade macaroni and cheese, then it will be an entree. If I’m doing a quick box of Annie’s, then it’ll be a side dish.

If I’m making m&c, it’ll be the meal, but I’ll put stuff in it. Heat up some frozen veggies, tear up a few pieces of sliced turkey, toss in something to give it some spiciness. I don’t do that often and haven’t for years, but it would be mainly for the sake of throwing something together easily if I’m willing to go to a bit more effort than just throwing a package of something in the microwave.

Most of the time when I have it, it’s a side dish.

I’m not making mac and cheese, either as a side dish or a main dish. No way. I do not like macaroni; texture issue. These days I can usually get a bit down without gagging if somebody else feeds it to me, but there’s no way I’m making it for myself.

That didn’t seem to be an option in the poll, which appears to assume that everybody makes mac and cheese.

I’ll note that when I’ve seen it on menus it very often appears to be a side dish; I’d say more often than a main dish.

I’m not exactly sure what “Macaroni and cheese” is, I assume is some kind of pasta with just cheese.
I voted “10%” because in the rare occasions we made pasta and put only cheese on it (something my wife considers sacrilegious, if she’s going to make pasta she’s also going to prepare some sauce to put in it as God intended!) we generally eat it as a main dish, because if we reached that extreme we must be in an absolute hurry and preparing food just to fuel up. But!, rarely we already have something to eat but it’s not enough and in those cases we may prepare some pasta to complete the meal.
