Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 2)

I saw it 30 years ago and all I remember is that Herman Munster was the judge, the smoking gun was grits, and Marisa Tomei was hot.

And somehow she was supposed to be in love with Joe Pesci.

Who was presumably a just-passed-the-bar lawyer in his 30s(?), played by an actor who was almost 50.

I saw the My Cousin Vinny in the early 1990s and do not remember a thing about it. All I remember is renting it from a video store when my in laws came for a visit.

I saw it, but don’t remember anything about it.

What…is a yoot?

mmm

There were no other bad guys in My Cousin Vinny. The closest was the I’ll kick your ass guy but that was so minor a part it doesn’t really matter. That’s one of the reason it works. No one is evil. Just ordinary people who came to the wrong but understandable conclusion that the defendants were guilty. If Vinny was fighting against evil it would have been a lot less funny. The movie is a remote drop. I’ve seen it many times at least part of the way through.

I’d say all 3 discredited witnesses were recklessly endangering the defendants by testifying to something they couldn’t have seen, only grits guy can be given much benefit of the doubt. The sheriff at best is wilfully oblivious to context and the auto expert should have been able to spot the discrepancy himself. They’re not evil but they’re not great.

I’ve probably seen My Cousin Vinny at least four times (maybe more), and I laugh every time. It’s a feel good movie with humor, what’s not to like?

Also, IIRC Legal Eagle says most of the courtroom stuff was fairly accurate.

I’ve had several conversations with lawyers recently about My Cousin Vinny and that’s their take on it, too: it’s much closer to how trials actually work than most “courtroom dramas.”

I was a little disappointed to not see Marvin Lee Aday’s name in the celebrity name poll.

(you may know him as Mr. Loaf)

mmm

I have a few more quasi-unknown names, but it may be best to save them for the next poll.

I’ve got dozens more myself, but figured 20 was enough for one poll. If you want to post your own follow-up list, feel free!

@psychonaut, you may want to spoilerize who they are in yours, as I am for mine:

Frances Gumm - Judy Garland
Allan Stewart Konigsberg - Woody Allen
Natalia Nikolaevena Zakharenko - Natalie Wood
Stevland Hardaway Judkins - Stevie Wonder
Neta-Lee Herschlag - Natalie Portman
Lucille Fay LeSueur - Joan Crawford (gotcha if you were thinking Lucille Ball)
Brian Warner - Marilyn Manson
Michael Douglas - Michael Keaton
Albert Einstein - Albert Brooks
David Robert Jones - David Bowie (vs. the Monkee)
Margarita Carmen Cansino - Rita Hayworth
Marion Robert Morrison - John Wayne
Betty Joan Perske - Lauren Bacall (vs. Betty Grable or Joan Crawford)
James Newell Osterberg Jr. - Iggy Pop
Mark Sinclair - Vin Diesel
Dana Elaine Owens - Queen Latifah

What are we supposed to do with your poll? It’s set up so we can only choose one.

You might want to edit your poll. You can only vote for one. (I only knew one, so that was okay.)

AARRGGHH. I was focused so hard on making sure the names matched AND that I didn’t duplicate what psychonaut used that in my usual fashion that setting completely slipped my mind.

You duplicated Maurice Joseph Micklewhite !

He’s worth duplicating!

SCREAM.

Proof that I shouldn’t be doing such things near bedtime, esp. after spending several hours on a personal project which absolutely demands such rigorous attention to detail…

Am disappointed that a certain female gothic post-punker got zero recognition tho.
