But… what if we didn’t want to wish you a happy birthday?
There really should have been a “crappy birthday” option.
Seriously, happy birthday, dude.

What if someone remembers your birthday in a particularly disappointing way?
What, like if a hated enemy gives you a present that smells up your apartment?
I have definitely had that happen.
I would vote Not Guilty.
That being said, I’ve always thought that a cunning lawyer or prosecutor could slyly slip in a banned argument before the judge has time to recognize what’s going on and stop it in time - if quick enough with tongue and wit.
I voted for “not guilty” in the stricken statement poll. One, I tend to Lawful Neutral, so my feeling is against making too many extra-legal decisions, and second, well, if it comes out (and it likely will, I’m not perfect) then I just threw out the verdict and put everyone back to square one.
I tend to lean more towards the “spirit of the law” in general, but admittedly here we don’t have any idea what the crime was. The more serious the offense, and/or the penalty, the more I’ll start leaning the “letter of the law” direction.
I couldn’t pick a side in the objection poll. If I saw there was 25+ minutes remaining in the L&O episode, I’d figure a twist was coming, so probably not guilty. If -10 minutes, yeah, probably guilty, though I’d reserve judgment until the defendant melted down on the stand.
We also don’t know on what grounds the statement was rendered inadmissable.
I’m not sure what I’d do.
And IME the various shipping services all work pretty well.
Does DHL still do domestic shipping in the US? IIRC they made a big splash when came to the US by buying the old Airborne Express in the mid-aughts, tried to compete with UPS and FedEx head to head, but wasn’t successful at it and discontinued their domestic shipping services after a few years. They’re still around but I think they only do international shipping to/from the US now.
Huh, I had no idea.
mmm
If it’s something that was ruled against and the lawyer on either side purposely slipped it in before the judge could stop it then there is a good chance it would result in a mistrial and penalties against the lawyer. Judges don’t like games.
Yes but their website sucks, it only states they’ll update in 1-3 days. I frequently have my delivery before they update the page again. I’m only the receiver; B&H uses them so I get no say in the matter (unless I want to pay more)
I don’t know. I have a vague impression that I got something delivered by them, years ago; if so it arrived OK.
USPS, UPS, and FedEx all deliver here. I usually find it simplest to send by USPS, but I know there are dropoff sites for the others someplace around here.
I chose FedEx, mostly because of bad experiences with USPS and UPS. UPS, well, they’ve had their problems, past and present. USPS is the government, and they are really quite explicit in that they’ll try to get it there in the timeframes they promise, but they hold zero responsibility if it doesn’t. (This has happened to me a few times, and of them, only once was it understandable in my opinion).
With Fedex, if I absolutely had to have it there in a specific timeframe, they come through. Doesn’t mean I use them much, but for something that has to be in a specific timeframe with accountability they would be my choice.
I choose USPS, because not only is it the best , but it doesnt have objectionable politics, like UPS or FedEX.
Sending donations to the GOP, even indirectly is not a thing I wish to do- if there are alternatives.
DHL is the worst for me. I’ve only had it for international shipments, so I don’t know if they still do domestic or not. I was so aggrevated by a couple of recent shipments, that I now have them drop any packages for me at one of those free lance postal places fairly near me. I am no longer staying around the house all day waiting for a delivery and have DHL attempt no communication with me, but instead send me a text that they couldn’t access the property and they’ll try again later.
USPS is the most reliable. FEDEX talks a good game in their advertising, but they’re not any more reliable than UPS for me. ETA: UPS customer facing people are better than the FEDEX ones, as well.
UPS and FedEx have never been a problem for me - except when the last leg of the delivery is handed off to the USPS. Over the past year I have had three packages lost in Post Office Purgatory for more than a month. And regular mail frequently gets lost completely or sometimes delivered to neighbors who are nice enough to bring it to me.
USPS is definitely the worst.
I subscribe to the print versions of a local weekly and a relatively local daily paper, online access included; as well as intermittently (including at the moment) to online access only to a national paper.
I voted that I subscribe to a print paper and a national paper, because I decided that making it plural in one case wasn’t worth using the ‘other’ option instead.
I subscribed to the Sunday only print edition of my local paper strictly to receive the New York TImes crossword every week.
I recently dropped it and subscribed to the NYT online.
I now pay 50 cents a week instead of $4, get the crossword daily, and the crosswords are not 2 weeks old when I get them.
I’ve also learned to enjoy solving them online.
Now, what to do with all those pens I bought specifically for doing my crosswords?
mmm
