I’m a scientist working in academia. Pretty much all of us dress casually – meaning jeans and a T-shirt or sweater, or maybe a button-up shirt or blouse. Once I went to an interdisciplinary conference and was surprised to see several of the humanities scholars wearing suits. I thought, “Oh, that’s cool that they still do that,” and so I’ve been wearing my suit to scientific conferences ever since, hoping to start (or revive?) a trend. So far it hasn’t worked.
Ya lucky bastidge! When our daughter announced her engagement, my husband and I were secretly hoping they’d elope and we could just give them the money we would have spent on the wedding, but no dice. I took my spouse, whose shape had changed fairly drastically since he last wore a suit, to a highly recommended tailor to buy him a good suit. We certainly paid enough for a really good suit. Perhaps I should have attended all the fittings, or maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, but that suit (with cuffed pants, no less) didn’t do a damn thing for him. But now it’s his suit, and he’ll be wearing it for every formal occasion that requires a suit, probably for the rest of his life.
I understand how a suit can fail to make a person look slimmer. But how did they manage to create a suit for a six-foot man that makes him look portly and short??
And I own four exceptionally nice dresses, but now that I don’t go to the theater any more, I’ll only be wearing them to weddings (but not funerals, since they’re all bright colors).
This made me laugh. I recently attended the wedding of a friend’s daughter. His suit struck me as being ill-fitted, but I didn’t really give it another thought.
He later mentioned that he had it custom made, and paid $1400 for just the jacket. I hope my expression didn’t give me away.
mmm
I have always called him Chick-o, probably because I knew of the Marx brothers before I ever heard of someone called Cheek-o. I imagine the reverse is true for most people these days.
I am old and pretty sure that the first person I heard of with that name was Chico Marx; but I also saw his name written well before I ever heard it spoken, and have rarely heard it spoken at all compared to the times I’ve seen it written. And, for whatever reason, when I saw it written, my mind said it was cheek-o; so that’s the way it stuck in my head.
I grew up in a town with a large Hispanic population. The words “chico” and “chica” are very common, and the Spanish “i” is always pronounced like the English “ee”. It was only recently that I learned that the Marx brother pronounced it with a “short i”.
Come to think of it – somewhere around fifth grade we supposedly had a Spanish class. I say “supposedly” because it was taught by a teacher whose only knowledge of Spanish was that she was ahead of us in the book (and maybe had heard some recordings) and the only Spanish I actually learned enough to remember it later was how to count to ten. But some other words must have been mentioned and maybe that’s where I got my pronunciation of Chico.
Or maybe I just thought that Chick - o should have been spelled Chicko and since that obviously wasn’t the Marx brother’s name it must be pronounced some other way.
Movie music:
The question says purchase from other sources but all the examples given are movies.
If all the music is from other movies if would probably not work as you would keep thinking of the other movies however if it was a bit of Bach, a bit of the Beatles, a bit of Wagner (as appropriate to what is happening in the film) it is very likely to work
Yeah, that was my issue too.
Between my father having a degree in Spanish and watching Chico and the Man in my formative years, and living in TX, there was no way I could call him Chick-o. That’s just wrong
I regret to say that I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to movie soundtracks and probably wouldn’t notice.
I listen to a LOT of movie soundtracks, and related works.
When I say related works, I mean stuff by Audiomachine, Epic North, Les Friction, and Two Steps From Hell. These are people that release tracks built as powerful, short pieces for movie trailers in general.
So yeah, if done appropriately, you could piece together one or more movie’s worth of awesome music from groups such as this, and I’d probably notice, but others likely wouldn’t.
I read a book about the Marx Brothers when I was in my early teens, so I knew it was pronounced Chick-o (because he liked the ladies).
I love black licorice and have ever since I was a kid. Red “licorice” tastes like plastic. Swedish Fish, yuck!
When I was a California State Assemblyperson (in the Youth Legislature), Ronald Reagan spoke to us. He was only the governor then, so I guess he doesn’t count. But I was less than 10 feet away from him.
When JFK was running for president, we heard his motorcade was going to drive down the nearest big street to us, so we ran the two blocks and saw his car drive by. When he was president, Clinton flew into and out of LAX, and we got stopped on the street running along the west boundary of the airport for his car/entourage to enter the gates. We actually saw him and waved. He waved back.
I like when a movie soundtrack bring together a bunch of cool classic tunes from several of my fave artists- all in one CD.
Some movie sound tracks are nothing but that. It’s been a very long time, but The Big Chill comes to mind.
If another movie stole that movie’s pop songs, maybe mixed them around, who would notice?
I have an interesting story about a forgotten birthday. This was almost twenty years ago. I had a particularly depressing birthday that year. I was single and lonely. None of my family remembered to call me. I was down in the dumps.
But exactly a week later, totally unexpectedly, I met the woman who would become my wife. We’ve been married 17 years now.
The movie soundtrack poll needs a “Who Cares” option.
Exactly. I watch movies and read the closed captions. I don’t listen to or notice the soundtrack.
What I find weird is you can win a Grammy for putting together a mix tape. Zack Braff won a Grammy for putting together the music for Garden State.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, @Karen_Lingel (and anyone else who voted in that poll)!
