Top sheet facing down. Mostly because, as noted, that’s mostly the side with the least exposed seam or other possible irritations. And I’m one of those who for much of the year is sleeping with just a sheet, or maybe with a throw on top for occasional late-night chills.
I generally wear a smartwatch, android in my case. Applewatches IMHO are better made, better supported, and a better bang for the buck, but most features are dependent upon having an iPhone, which I find insufficiently granular in detail control as an OS.
I don’t wear it to sleep, that’s when I normally charge it though.
I found it VERY helpful for texting or taking calls while driving in my prior non-smart vehicles (voice control only, and yes mine has a mic and speakers). Now that I can get calls, texts, and control music from my dash, that’s a lot less important. So it’s mostly used as a watch, or for subtly getting texts or other information when I’m theoretically supposed to be paying attention at long events or family gatherings.
One of my cousins and his wife used to work part time for Toyota at auto shows up and down the US west coast (or maybe it was just in California), and they would sometimes hook me up with free tickets. Didn’t always use them, but I did manage to score gift cards from another manufacturer (Ford, I think?) for signing up for email updates. Got the $50 GC, canceled the emails immediately. I like to think of myself as a car guy, but not enough to spend all day in the crowds at those shows. I like the cars, can’t stand being around that many people.
I went to the Chicago Auto Show several times when I was younger; in part due to being interested in buying a new car, and in part because I just like cars. Haven’t been back in at least 20 years however.
I went to the Home Show up in Green Bay, where I grew up, several times, but that was mostly because my mom was working for a kitchen-and-bath remodeling company at the time. There, too, I haven’t been back in decades.
Only my father called it an icebox, but he was from the midwest, in addition to being old enough to have had an actual “icebox” when he was growing up.
I’ve heard characters in old TV shows call it an “icebox”, but I can’t recall ever hearing anyone call it that in real life. And those 1950s-60s TV characters probably would have been old enough to remember actual iceboxes at that time.
As for dessert: if I’m going to a fancy restaurant as an event i often eat dessert. Generally, if i still have enough appetite to enjoy it i do. But if I’m going to the local place because we aren’t cooking that night, or I’m eating out because I’m traveling, then almost never.
My best friend’s family had an icebox next to the refrigerator. It was an antique that his parents found and cleaned up, and they used it for storage in the kitchen. It’s the only real icebox I’ve ever seen outside a museum. This was in the late 1970s.
I said “usually” for both the dessert and appetizer questions.
Dessert: Aside from the Pepperidge Farm cookies that are always in my house (and are practically a food group) I generally only have dessert when I’m out, so I like to take advantage. But sometimes there’s nothing on the dessert menu that appeals to me, and sometimes I don’t have the time and/or the room.
Appetizers: I had gastric bypass surgery five years ago and I’m currently on a GLP-1, so my appetite and stomach size are both smaller than usual. Appetizers – or kids menu options – are often “just right.” So if there’s an appetizer on the menu that appeals to me, it’s often a better bet than an entree I definitely won’t be able to finish (but I’ll feel like I need to take the leftovers home, where they’ll sit in my fridge for several weeks until I throw them away). Sometimes I’m up for an entree, though. And whether I go appetizer or entree often directly impacts whether I get dessert.
As I recall, my father used “icebox” but my mother, who was the same age as him, never did. They were born in the 1920s so probably were familiar with actual iceboxes in their youth. In fact I remember my father saying that he had a job delivering ice to houses when he was young.
My grandmothers both used the term “icebox;” both of them were born in the first decade of the 20th century, and likely grew up with actual iceboxes. I never heard my parents use the term, and we always called it a “fridge.”
“acceptable” is a funny way to ask the question. Although I rarely heard “icebox” it certainly would have been an acceptable slang. I voted “fridge” because that’s what I recall hearing the most.
The only time I ever get dessert at a restaurant is when it’s “included”, for example when I’m at a fine dining establishment with a fixed, multi-course menu, where one of the courses is dessert. Although in that case you don’t really “order” dessert, they just bring you your dessert course. Or as in the case of my recent trip to Glacier, since I’m booked the trip as a package through Amtrak Vacations, I had prepaid vouchers for dinner at the lodge each night. Each voucher included either soup or salad, a main course, and dessert. Most evenings I didn’t really want the dessert since the main course was so big, but I felt obligated to order one since it was essentially already paid for.
Appetizers, usually not, except when I’m at a Chinese restaurant. I like spring rolls, so I always get an order of spring roles at a Chinese restaurant. That’s why I picked “seldom” rather than “almost never” like I did with dessert.
