Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

We usually get apps at Chinese and Indian, and i get them at Japanese. We usually don’t get them with European food, unless, again, the meal is an event in and of itself. Then i usually order an appetizer.

Dinner at home is served as one course, with a bunch of food on the table. It almost never ends with dessert unless it’s someone’s birthday and there’s cake. Or for Thanksgiving or the Seder.

It varies.

Ice delivery was a good way to keep in shape between Football seasons in High School, was the way I heard it. Refrigerators were expensive, so Ice delivery didn’t go away completely for a long time, in poor areas and especially Apartments. 50 pound blocks carried up 8 flights of stairs, that kind of thing.

My parents were born in the 1920s, so they had grown up using real iceboxes, and they used the term well into the 1980s.

Appetizers and desserts: I eat out often enough to need a category in between “seldom” and “50/50”.

My wristwatch is a Casio Databank.

Generally if one is a senior, yes, or if one adult orders a full meal.

I’m amazed by the “dessert” and “appetizer” results. So few of you commonly order dessert! So many of you never or almost never do! Wow. I’m around 50/50 now, but for most of my life I was “almost always,” and nearly everyone around me was/is the same.

Appetizers, as well! I mean, not from McDonald’s, sure…but from a real restaurant? I’d say about 70% of the time, usually shared (one or two appetizer plates among two or three people). Yet so many of you rarely or never order appetizers.

Astounding. The last time I was blown away by something like this was a year ago, when I discovered (via some national poll or other) that a majority of Americans rarely eat breakfast! I’ve lived half a century, in dozens of places across this country and world, and everyone in my life usually eats breakfast. Of course they do! It’s freakin’ breakfast! Who ARE these people?

(Oh, and here’s the kicker: According to that poll, a large percentage of those who don’t usually eat breakfast…wished that they *did* eat breakfast!

Couldn’t you try,you know…work with me here…eating breakfast?

Maybe I’m being elitist? All these millions of people can’t afford breakfast? Or do they have jobs that require them to leave the house at a certain hour…but their sleep needs/habits make it impossible (?) to squeeze ten extra minutes into their morning..?)

It takes me more than 10 minutes to assemble and eat my breakfast. And if you aren’t a morning person, mornings can be challenging. (I do eat breakfast, and have mixed feelings about doing so, but my husband talked me into it and it’s become a habit.)

I very rarely eat breakfast, maybe once or twice a month, if that.

I’m just not hungry in the morning, it’s no more complicated than that.

mmm

Very often, when I’m finished with my meal I’m too full for dessert, or at least too full for it to be worth the extra expense and calories.

Maybe it’s a matter of what country you’re in or what kind of restaurants you frequent. It’s often observed how large the portion sizes tend to be in American restaurants. I can eat quite a bit, and I usually finish my meal, but I usually find I get plenty of food just from my main meal, without adding on appetizers or desserts.

I tend not to order appetizers or desserts to minimize the number of times I have to speak with the waiters, I’m shy and talking with strangers interferes with my enjoyment of the meal.
Sometimes, if I’m particularly interested in the appetizers/desserts of a particular restaurant I’ll do it, sometimes I won’t bother.

:raised_hand:

I love breakfast food, but not in the morning: for whatever reason, no matter how early I wake up if I eat before lunchtime it tends to upset my stomach. It’s something I first noticed ~40 years ago, when I was in in high school. Roughly a decade ago I finally started having a protein shake for “breakfast” each morning. Docs/nutritionists still wish that I’d eat actual food, but they grudgingly agree that a shake is better than nothing.

I never had a huge sweet tooth to start with, but I was diagnosed with diabetes over 20 years ago, so dessert is now fundamentally off the menu.

If I’m at a restaurant with others who are having dessert, I’ll usually order coffee, so I have something while they’re enjoying dessert.

Some of us just don’t like sweets very much. As for appetizers - if a salad counts, then yes. Otherwise the only time we get anything before the main course is when we really fine dine and the kitchen sends out an amuse-bouche.

Getting appetizers isn’t an individual decision in my circle. There needs to be some consensus among the diners, especially when splitting the check equal ways. We lean toward trying new or interesting apps… or Brussel sprouts; it seems like every restaurant has a different take on that dish.

Mostly I say fridge but still often say icebox even though I never saw one in use. My parents and most other older relatives all used it and it just stuck with me. I’ve heard lots of people say Frigidaire regardless of the actual brand name. My father sometimes called it a “frigid-later”.

I’ve never heard of The Green Lantern Corps, or their oath.

If I’m eating in a restaurant that means it’s a special occasion and will usually get both an appetizer and a dessert, often split with others at the table.

I don’t THINK I am eligible to be president / head of state of a non-US country but I could be wrong.

Theoretically the entire population of earth is part of the line to the UK throne, but genealogies only go back so far and I don’t know what would happen if the entire known Royal family was wiped out.

I also am not sure if any countries do not require citizenship to be eligible. If the only requirement to stand for president of “Elbonia” is to be over 18, then there is a country I am eligible to be head of state.

I’m not sure about my eligibility for non-US countries, but I know that @Elendil_s_Heir is eligible to be king of Gondor.

I’m eligible to be President of the USA and also Prime Minister of Canada (though probably not at the same time: conflict of interest). Neither of those things is going to happen, of course.

I’m eligible to be president of the US, but trust me, no one wants that. Not even me.
