I have strong memories of my mother putting Mercurochrome on various minor cuts and scrapes when I was a kid. I remember the little glass vial and especially that weird little glass dipper thing that was used to put a drop of that bright red liquid on your wound.
Plates - I have one of the state issued plates, with no specialty numbers, but it’s considered a premium/specialty plate. I got the EV variant, because my PHEV qualifies by state standards. My wife has a state issued general plate though. Was only about $15 surcharge.
I’m still looking for a decal to put on either of my “fuel” doors. My wife has a white Rav4 Prime with black trim, and I got her a TIE Interceptor decal for her EV charging door. Yes, you may boo me for the joke on the Twin ion Engine, but I have nerdy tastes.
My Prius PHEV is the dark gray that overlaps with a number of Tesla’s, so for the moment I call it Dagoth Ur, the Car echoing the characters coloration and the meme about Dagoth Ur (the building). But I haven’t found a decal that matches the name, the meme or the dual power system yet.
I have a University of Michigan alumni license plate frame.
I have a standard plate.
I have a plate in the front that is Storm from the X-Men. It’s badly faded and needs replacing.
A personalized plate (a Star Wars reference, of course) on a standard Illinois license plate design.
Green Bay Packers license plate frames on both front and back: the front commemorates their last Super Bowl victory; the rear indicates that I am a Packers shareholder.
My father, the neighborhood doctor, didn’t believe in putting antiseptics on cuts and scrapes. He said it killed the cells that would heal the wound, and my family just used soap and water. But most of the other parents used Mercurochrome, and i certainly saw it.
They used to slather Mercurochrome on me, so much I developed a slight allergy to it. It is not good stuff, btw.
My mother certainly used it on me. God knows how old that vial was when it finally got thrown out.
I haven’t been living under a rock so of course I know what OnlyFans is. What I’ll never understand is why some people will pay so much for what is available for free. I know the question was asked because the owner of the site recently died at a very young age and it’s in the news. I seem to recall that when I first heard about it the site was promoted as a platform for influencers and content creators to sell exclusive content to their fans. Pretty soon it became all porn all the time. I’m not sure if the shift happened after the newly deceased owner took over.
Auto license plate:
The daily driver is a Bolt so as an EV it gets the Alternative Fuel plate. The number on it is not personalized but I kept a personalized AF plate off a CNG Honda that was scrapped years ago (SALUQI). Once a sequence is issued it’s not available forever but once the ad valorum fees are off I will take it to the DMV and see if they will reactivate it.
I chucked the dealer frame as soon as I got home with it and put on a plain, black frame.
The only other mark on it is a Ukranian tryzub in black and white.
I hadn’t heard of Murcurochrome but a google revealed you can still get “Murcurochrome” but it is actually Murbromin. I think it is a French brand name.
What the obituary said is that when the guy purchased a controlling share of the OnlyFans platform it was a tiny porn site, doing about $2m of business annually. He expanded it, in part by attracting influencers and content creators and celebrities to join. He also added a little non-porn (maybe to get more of those influencers) but the site has always been about porn. It was growing steadily, but its growth exploded during the pandemic, when a lot is live sex work shut down. Its annual revenue is now $7B.
He died a rich man.
Since we’re talking about license plates & bumper stickers PLEASE HELP me find something I saw on another car & want. It’s a clear piece of S-shaped Lucite, the height of a license plate with two holes in it. It mounts to the car behind the license plate on one side (so top & bottom screws) & essentially allows you to put a square / round bumper sticker right next to your license plate without it being affixed to the car. The S-shape is two 90° bends so that you can use it on a car with a recessed license plate. My GoogleFu is failing me because it is not a license plate frame & I don’t exactly know what it is called to search for one. I would have thought someone maybe 3D printed it but I didn’t think you could print clear.
Something like this?
mmm
That’s the general idea; however, the one I saw was both clear & because of the two 90° bends stuck out from (in front of/ further from the front of the the car than) the license plate. The car I want to put it on has a tight license plate indentation & the one you linked to won’t work because there’s not enough room to the side of the license plate for it to fit.
Re: old people — we already have something equivalent, but starting at 80, though it doesn’t include a road test. Senior drivers - Province of British Columbia
I think ALL drivers should be retested every 10 years. At least an eye test and a written exam. Road testing that many people would be a nightmare in more densely populated states.
Am shocked at my OnlyFans poll-nope, never heard of it myself, but 89% have?
My mom once tried to put that mercurochrome stuff on me when I had a bad scrape. The blood-red color immediately made me faint when she applied it. I was c. 5 years old or so. She soon switched to colorless Bactine.
When I was a kid I remember Mercurochrome being used, but it seemed less effective than Iodine and Merthiolate because they burned more. ![]()
Until today, I wasn’t aware that mercurochrome (and merthiolate) had been banned. I just thought they went away because more effective things were available.
In my career I have had to fill out the form to get older drivers retested several times. I always hated to do it but every time I did it was because of dangerous actions that required it in my mind. I’m not against retesting elderly drivers. I know it’s nearly impossible for most to admit they can no longer drive. We are about to go through that with the in-laws. I just don’t know how the logistics will work with that many tests. It’s already a nightmare getting new drivers tested.
I would favor a system that would trigger a mandatory driving test in the event of certain incidents, such as moving violations or accidents.
While I realize this might fail to identify all unsafe drivers, requiring testing based solely on one’s age seems unnecessarily intrusive.
