Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 3)

My brain kept bouncing back and forth on scrolling “up” or “down.”

My first instinct—since my finger is moving upward—was “scroll up.” But since I’m moving down the page, I reconsidered.

I finally settled on scrolling down, since that’s how it’s commonly described; if I see “scroll down for more text,” for instance, I know that means to slide my finger up, as counterintuitive as that sounds.

In addition, if I’m on a computer using a mouse, “down” is pretty unambiguous.

The question didn’t make sense to me as I use a mousewheel (does anyone use a mousewheel anymore?), and if I want to scroll “up” (to material above the current view) I likewise scroll up with the mousewheel, same if going down. So I didn’t vote since there is full concordance between my physical movements and where I am scrolling to.

Coke to Wheelz.

When I answered that poll I ignored the part about which direction you’re moving your finger or cursor or mouse wheel or whatever interface you’re using. To me that’s irrelevant. If you’re scrolling to look at something that’s lower on the screen, then you’re scrolling down.

Didn’t see the long discussion of mouse usage in the Pit THINKING thread until just now.

I don’t see the point (heh) of the poll question, then.

Exactly, what matters is in which direction the viewport is moving, if you are looking for things that are downwards you scroll down, if upwards you scroll up.

My wife and me have a similar discussion because she thinks completely obvious that “the first drawer” means the top one, while to me it could be the top one or the bottom one so you need to specify.
Me being myself she’s probably right and 90% of humanity understands that, but I usually need more detailed instructions.

Now ask your wife which is the first floor of a building.

We are going down a rabbit hole, because here the first floor is the second one from bottom to top (the street level floor is called “Planta Baja”), while I understand in the U.S. the first floor is the one at street level.

I got a cryptic note from myself today:

“Budgeted financials by program for additional grants.”

I mean it’s a fairly detailed note but I still don’t know what it means.

Pleased to see that, as least in this instance, I’m the less weird one for calling it “scrolling down”.

Yup. In the U.S., “first floor” is generally synonymous with “ground floor;” I learned that, in many other countries, “first floor” is what we’d call “second floor” here.

I learned this after running a pre-written Dungeons & Dragons adventure, in which it described that a non-player character had suffered a significant injury after jumping out of a “first-floor window.” I thought to myself, “wow, how much of a klutz were they?” And, then, I discovered that the author of the adventure was English, and was using the British definition of “first floor.”

Coffee Yes

Coffee linked to slower brain ageing in study of 130,000 people

Beer Yes
Whiskey Yes

I love blue cheese and mushrooms, and I am fine with cilantro. Beer & Whiskey are a very occasional thing for me.

I still dont know why these have to be public??

Anchovies: Wasn’t quite sure how to answer because I don’t think I’ve ever had them before. I thought about just not answering the question, but went with neutral just because I think of that as my default position for anything I haven’t tried.

Coffee: Black, no. With cream and sugar, yes.

Beer: In general, yes, but I’ve never really cared for most IPAs.

Whiskey: Maybe not my favorite spirit (that would be brandy), but still a yes.

If my screen and thumb moves up, I’m scrolling up. If my screen and thumb moves down, I’m scrolling down. Don’t blame me, blame the form function.

My programmer’s soul is warmed by calling the ground level floor “Floor 0” and then “Floor 1”, “Floor 2”, etc.

If you put anchovies in tomato sauce and they just kind of disolve and add some deeper notes, they’re fine, but I voted “no!” because I don’t want them on my pizza or in my salad (though if they’re invisibly in my Caesar dressing, that’s fine with me).

D’oh! I have made homemade Caesar dressing, which of course contains anchovies. I don’t know how I forgot that (maybe lack of coffee). But I’ve still never had whole ones, like on a pizza or in a salad.

Not a fan of many of the things mentioned in the foods-and-drinks poll. But I do like anchovies.

I don’t like anchovies on my pizza and I’m neutral on their use in salads, but if you visit the Mediterranean, they are served fried as appetizers. Very tasty, but very salty.

Depends on the beer. Depends on the whisky.

Depends a lot on the particular beer.
