Disney Animated Movie Madness ROUND THREE!

  1. Cinderella
    17. The Emperor’s New Groove
ENG was the movie that showed Disney could be funny after a long dry spell.
  2. 101 Dalmatians
    9. Lilo and Stitch
Not even close in my eyes.
    4. Sleeping Beauty
  3. Dumbo

5. The Little Mermaid
21. The Jungle Book
2. Beauty and the Beast
18. Robin Hood
This was a tougher decision than it should have been.

26. Fantasia
10. Pinocchio
3. Aladdin
19. Peter Pan

  1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    11. The Lion King

I’m bvery sad to see Mulan die in the last round. It would have been my personal winner.

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. 101 Dalmatians

  3. Sleeping Beauty

  4. The Little Mermaid

  5. Beauty and the Beast

  6. Fantasia

  7. Aladdin

  8. The Lion King

  1. Cinderella

  2. Lilo & Stitch

  3. Dumbo

  4. The Jungle Book

  5. Robin Hood

  6. Fantasia

  7. Peter Pan

  8. Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs

I’ll go one better and say that Pinocchio is simply the greatest animated feature film ever made.

Too bad our little woodenhead is lagging (by just a little). Go Pinoch!!

Can I one up you and say that Pinocchio is the greatest achivement in the field of animation to date? Too far?

Seriously though. People don’t give Pinocchio enough credit. It is far and away the best American animated feature made, possibly the best in the world. It is the Citizen Kane of American animation.

But it looks like it won’t make it to the final 4, and my first round prediction will come true.

Sorry, buds, Pinocchio isn’t that good. Good, very good, but not even close to the greatest.

I think I may actually want to start a CS thread about this. But in terms of pure animation, on a technical level, I don’t think Disney ever re-achived what they did in Pinocchio. And from a plot perspective, I think it is the only Disney adaptation that manages to improve on the original. (And I like the book).

Wonder if a debate about cartoons would get any traction in CS?

I am sure it would.

I’d certainly be there because while Fantasia may be ambitious, Pinocchio is simply, even modestly, perfect. It only takes a closer examination of Disney’s legacy in, say, the last half-century to illustrate how amazingly risky and unique the film actually is.

I’d like to read it. Pinocchio is one of my least favorite movies.

I think The Little Mermaid will beat The Jungle Book as well, which makes me die a little inside.

The Little Mermaid was the beginning of Disney’s renaissance in the 90’s, but, frankly, it wasn’t that well animated. I don’t fault the studio … they were still working to get their chops back. But the drawings are often stiff and feel overly-keyframed.

Compare how Ariel and her friends move in this scene with Mowgli, Kaa, and Shere Khan in this one. It’s like night and day. The Jungle Book characters have a weight and physicality that is entirely absent from the Little Mermaid characters.

Sigh.

You’d get a lot of interest from the various anime fans here, too. While there are the usual “it’s animated, it’s garbage for children” here on the Dope, we’ve got a lot higher percentage of people who view animation as a valid art form.

Ok, here it is.

  1. Cinderella

  2. 101 Dalmatians

  3. Dumbo

  4. The Jungle Book

  5. Robin Hood

  6. Fantasia

  7. Peter Pan

  8. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

  1. Cinderella
    17. The Emperor’s New Groove

If you cut the cat & mouse chase sequences from Cinderella, it’s about 10 minutes long. And Emperor is hilarious.

  1. 101 Dalmatians
    9. Lilo and Stitch

I’m not a fan of 60’s stylized animation. I don’t think anything from the 60s is going to win a matchup.
4. Sleeping Beauty
13. Dumbo

Tough one. I’ll vote for SB here because it’s my kids favorite, and Dumbo scared the crap out of my daughter.

5. The Little Mermaid
21. The Jungle Book

Absolute no-brainer. I don’t care if the animation isn’t up to snuff; the songs & screenplay are wonderful. And I hate how they emasculated Kipling.

2. Beauty and the Beast
18. Robin Hood

In a walkover.

26. Fantasia
10. Pinocchio

Pinocchio may be the pinnacle of animation art, but Fantasia is just more fun to watch. Waltz of the Flowers literally gives me chills every time.

3. Aladdin
19. Peter Pan

Like Little Mermaid, great songs, great script. Demerits to PP for “What Makes the Red Man Red”

6. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
11. The Lion King

Tough one. Going with historical import.

Whoa, Nelly, sports fans! Have we got some upsets here in Round Three!

Number one seed Cinderella was knocked off by #17 The Emperor’s New Groove.

#9 Lilo and Stitch was overtaken by #25 101 Dalmatians.

#10 Pinocchio got beat by #26 Fantasia.

Last in the upset department is #11 The Lion King over #5 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

Four upsets over eight match ups shows a lot of close competition in the trenches here. Who wins in Round Four to get to the quarter finals? Only you, the voters, can say!

Sigh. That’s what being on the road gets ya… totally forgot that Wednesday was yesterday. :smack:

Ok, I just saw this thread. Any contest in which The Emperor’s New Groove is adjudged to be better than Sleeping Beauty has lost all pretense of validity.

Or maybe you need to get your sense of humor checked, The Emperor’s New Groove is fantastic.
