Disproportionate number of Ireland-based dopers?

Don’t mean to rain on your parade, but as the G’Dope numbers man I should point out that there are about 50 “registered” Aussies on SDMB, plus almost that many again who haven’t registered.

Of course that doesn’t mean these dopers are currently active, nor a comment on quality v quantity.

OK, my parade is rained on.

How did you find that out?

Lots of reading profiles and locally themed OPs. Keeping an eye out for phrases showing antipodean credentials, throw away lines about a dopers’s childhood in Quambatook etc.

Sending out e:mail invitations to likely prospects. Dropping a link in a post to those who don’t display their e:mail addy.

Chipping away at the task for about 2 years.

I categorise “registered” as having signed up to G’Dope.

Heck, the Aussies have more trolls than the Irish have members.

Just kiddin’.

The strong Irish presence doesn’t surprise me. When I was first on the internet a few years ago, I found that the smaller places seemed to always have a strong online community. In any given Yahoo chatroom of forty-odd people, I’d rarely be the only Australian. Usually there’d be at least two others. Of those, for some reason, there was more often than not a Tasmanian. New Zealand and Ireland always featured strongly.
From memory, the “How Did You Find the SDMB?” threads tended to indicate a lot of us came to this board from Google, via a Straight Dope Classic column, rather than being long-term readers of the SD in print. This would account for the fact that the board population isn’t as overwhelmingly American as one might expect.

jjim…after 'Hello Godot" I am still your fan forever. (I will try not to stalk you.)

But from my experience with the Irish, I would imagine that after a night at the pub, and after a quick visit to the porno site, the typical Irish gentleman would be happy to get into a conversation…and where else but here?

Thanks for the mention, its the first time I’ve seen my name in a thread that I had nothing to do with, I am a bit of a lurker, how the hell did you remember me?

Thanks anyway

If there aren’t any major setbacks within the next 12 months, I “should” be living in Wexford.

Does that count or do I have to sign on when I get there?

Sign on - at a labour exchange?

No, as a Doper. Or is there some sort of arcane ritual that Culchies have to undergo?

Wait a sec…
As a U.S. born spouse of an Irish citizen who will be living in Wexford, will I be a Culchie or a Blow In?

The Wexford Hurlers changed their jerseys, so I will most definitely not be a Yellowbelly.

You’ll be a blow in to the culchies, and a culchie blow in to the jackeens.
