Do any females not find asian males distasteful?

Why would you feel bad about not liking black women? Do you also feel bad about not liking caviar / some other food?

What does taste have to do with bigotry?

How many female Asian sex symbols are there? I don’t see more than I do male… Personally, I find both Asian men and women attractive. If you want to get theoretical, though… if I <was> seeing more Asian women with Caucasians, then I would probably say it’s a mix of being with something rare, special, someone who’s more unique than a typical American, or the general physical characteristics of an Asian. Small, petite, etc. It would probably be a mix of things, and vary from male to male, just as women liking different sorts of men varies from female to female.

I feel bad because black women already get a raw deal. I’ve heard more than one complain about how black men are in demand, but black women aren’t as sought after.

It’s the same situation that Asian men find themselves in. In the case of Asian men though, the disparity is more obvious and more severe.

JThunder, I think that society has neglected to give us many Asian “heart throbs,” but some of us find them anyway. As I said before, as a teenager I thought this particular Asian actor (very obscure—not sure I remember his name now) was very dreamy. I also thought James Shigeta in “Flower Drum Song” was dreamy. As a kid I thought this. I would see James Shigeta listed in the credits of a movie on TV, and I’d squeal, “Oooh! James Shigeta!” and sometimes I’d watch the movie, just for him. I’ll bet I’m not the only one.

I remember the looks of disbelief and surprise from my Asian friends when I recognize some of these Asian actors. (I am a big movie buff anyway and kind of have a scary memory.) I just remembered them, that’s all. Soon-Tek Oh, Mako, and oh so many more contemporary ones whose names I can’t recall right now. (There’s a guy that was on parts of “24” and also “Crusade” that is very attractive, for instance.) But there need to be more, it’s true.

And every once in a while, a movie or TV show will casually have an Asian male / Caucasian female romance. One that I remember (because part of it was shot at a neighborhood mall) was Earth Angel. Dustin Nguyen was the male lead. Very cute. The nice thing about this romance was that no mention (that I recall) of race was mentioned. The sweet little romance just was what it was. And Nguyen was the male romantic lead. And he was so cute, so it was not a hard sell at all.

There are a few others I can think of, but of course, they are few and far between. Maybe if they weren’t—maybe if Hollywood would step up to the plate and do what “Earth Angel” did with such ease and casualness, people’s eyes would be opened up.

Yes, I got into a major hijack about Asian actors! Sorry! And yes, I agree with jsgoddess—Jackie Chan—there’s just “something” about him.

You’re kidding, right?

Just off the top of my head: Tia Carrere, Lucy Liu, Linda Park, Michelle Yeoh and Kristen Kreuk immediately come to mind. And that’s excluding any number of female Asian models. In contrast, most people would be hard-pressed to name even a single Asian male sex symbol.

The only one I thought of was Lucy Liu. Never heard of the others. I guess I am blind, but I swear I’m not purposefully so! chuckles Well, even still. There are more Caucasian female sex symbols than male, aren’t there? So wouldn’t that hold for <all> races? I’m not terribly cultural- I don’t watch a lot of TV, or whatnot, so I’m probably way off cue, I’m just guessing.

Maybe we can hook up these Asian dudes to the black ladies???

That’s too bad for them, but it’s not your problem, is it?

Fat people and amputees (for instance) also get a raw deal when it comes to dating, but nobody bemoans or even thinks twice about their trouble. Suddenly when race is involved, though, people get all sensitive and politically correct. The whole thing rings hollow and hypocritical. You don’t like them, it’s your taste, you can’t change it, get over it, move on. Some people (or groups of people) are just ugly. Including fat people, amputees, and (it appears from statistics) also black women and Asian men. If they weren’t ugly, they wouldn’t have so much trouble finding dates.

Hey hey, I never said I liked wooly bodies…just faces. Some chest hair is OK, but no Hasselhoff rugs, thank you.

Also, I didn’t mean those things as a fixed prerequisite; they just tend to make me look twice. I’ve been attracted to plenty of guys that don’t fit that description–for example, I find Orlando Bloom irresistible (but if I had my choice, I’d take Viggo as Aragorn, hehe).

I guess part of the reason I’m generally dismissive of skinnier guys (Asians included) is that they don’t seem to be attracted to me. I haven’t had any romantic attention from one since about 9th grade, and never from an Asian guy, so I’m just kinda conditioned not to give 'em much thought.

FTR–Jet Li’s pretty hot. And Bruce Lee, with a different haircut, would be scorching.

Bashir is also an “Asian man,” in my definition.

Garrett Wang is absolutely impossibly dreamy, as is Chow Yun Fat. These are guys I would label “heartthrobs.”

That there aren’t as many Asian male heartthrobs as female isn’t surprising. Are there as many male heartthrobs of any “race” as female? Won’t the discussion end up like this:

“Oh so-and-so is definitely dreamy.” “Yeah, but he’s a martial artist and a clown, not a heartthrob.” “But how about such-and-such.” “Well, I know some women who don’t find him attractive.” Etc.

Julie

Excuse me? Do you honestly think that people don’t feel bad for these individuals, or feel bad about their troubles?

Get real.

jsgoddess has it right.

A lot of these guys are dreamy. James Shigeta, (in his day) was dreamy. So are many of the current actors (like that guy from “24” Daniel Dae Kim. (See, I looked him up! :)) Very dreamy. Some of us notice. Doesn’t mean that Hollywood is going to help out much, but we’re not blind. Jackie Chan is cute. So is Dustin Nguyen and this Kim guy. We are noticing.

Oh my. Honey, you’ve never visited the Paris/Kim Slash Party. You go to a slash convention, you’ll find women by the gross positively dribbling over their Harry.

I beg to differ. Alexander Siddig is from Sudan, which is part of Africa. Even if we were to consider him to be Asian though, his appearance is decidedly atypical of the majority of Asians.

As I said, there are people who do find them attractive… but that doesn’t seem to be how people them in general.

I haven’t noticed any such disparity.

I don’t think that’s an accurate reflection of this disparity. NOBODY expects that a sex symbol shoudl be attractive to everyone, for example.

Look, it boils down to this. There are a good number of Asian actresses who are widely and primarily recognized as sex symbols and/or romantic leading ladies. There are also a good number of Asian female models, who are objects of sexual desire practically by fiat. In contrast, there are few – if any – Asian actors who are widely and primarily regarded as sex symbols or romantic leads. Sure, there are people like you who think they’re sexy, but one seldom hears them being lauded that way in the mdeia.

I’ll grant that there are women who find Jackie Chan and Garrett Wang to be dreamy. One seldom hears them being regarded that way though, whereas the likes of Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise, Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Leo DiCaprio, James Marsters and David Boreanaz are routinely treated in that regard – and that’s just naming a few.

Heck, here on the SDMB alone, we have guys routinely swooning over Kristen Kreuk and Linda Park. When was the last time we heard the ladies going into hysterics over Garrett Wang?

What about James Shigeta? Oooh! Ooh! James Shigeta!

JThunder, I do see what you are saying, (and I am feeling a little neglected that you haven’t acknowledge my posts of late ;)) but that has something to do with Hollywood too—not just individual females.

If more Asian males were given romantic leads, given storylines where they were allowed to be “sexy” or “romantic,” then maybe they’d be on more women’s “hunk radar.”

In other word, don’t just blame the female population, blame Hollywood.

Such ugliness was both uncalled for and inappropriate(the thread was supposed to be a poll for women). I don’t give third warnings.

Did some one say Hot Asian Guy?

Where do I sign up?

Ever since I had a mere acquaintence with a young guy who was indonesian (or something, I forget, I was too busy drooling.) who was , I mean this in all things hot, simply the most gorgeous man/guy I’d ever laid eyes on, one could say I had a thing for this type.

Russell Wong is another hottie…

Mistake about Alexander Siddig noted. I don’t find him attractive, so I’ve never paid much attention.

Hysterics over Garrett Wang? I don’t know. There are lots of women who probably don’t know who he is. I do know that any time I’ve ever mentioned Ensign Kim as being attractive, I’ve met with a chorus of agreement, from women and men. The lad is smokin’.

What’s amusing to me about your list is that the names I recognize are actors I find eminently forgettable. While I admit my tastes might not be entirely commonplace, I’d also wager that Garrett Wang (to continue to pick on poor Garrett) would be considered equally attractive to many of the men on your list if he were more famous. (I can’t see a majority of women finding this guy unattractive). Admittedly, he has an advantage in some ways. Guys like Russell Crowe have some skanky reputation problems dogging them.

If I started a thread about Jeremy Northam you’d see people coming out of the woodwork to comment on his babeishness, but you don’t have any English guys (that I recognize, sorry if I’m missing someone) on your list, either. Does that mean women don’t find English men attractive?

Julie

I had forgotten James Shigeta until you mentioned him. I watched that movie innumerable times just to ogle him. “Love look awaaaay from meeeee!”

Julie

Some attractive Asian guys: Daniel Dae Kim, James Shigeta and Dustin Nguyen (obviously someone at this site thinks Dustin is a major hottie). Just a few names. These guys are cute. If they would get better parts, I am sure more people would take notice. (OK, so Shigeta is a little long in tooth now, but in his day, he was very cute!)

Damn! On preview I see you found the same link of Shigeta as I did, jsgoddess! Oh well, I don’t feel like editing this…
