Four. A rare quad-post.
I put away the Kershaw I own after it opened in my pocket one too many times. Still carry and use my Leatherman Wave, even though it’s a bit heavy. I told my wife I want one of these for Xmas. I don’t think I’ll get it.
I have a cheap store brand (Ace Hardware) that I carry every day. It’s hard to keep a decent edge on it. On special occasions I carry my grandfather’s mother-of-pearl penknife. He carried it all the time I was growing up, and gave it to me just before he died.
When I went in for Federal Jury in Wilmington, I had my pocket ulu on me - they kindly checked it, along with my cell phone, gave me nice reciept, and at the end of the day (I wasn’t selected), handed me back my property without so much as a blink. But these were Federal Marshals, probably already carrying much ‘nicer’ knives themselves.
Yup. Nice blade, bad habit of opening at the wrong moment. Can’t have that.
I also have one of these. I wear it every time I go camping. it’s just in case I run into a ‘bar that needs killin’.
I carry a pocket knife on my keychain. Nothing fancy, no brand, 2-1/4" blade that locks, stainless steel finish, and a sappy sweet inscription that means I’d have to find something else to run across my wrists…
Anyone else consider that keeping a carabiner as the centerpiece of your key collection means you have a makeshift flail, as soon as you remove your belt? If there is a blade amoungst the keys, so much the better.
An interesting side note is that this morning’s Today Show on NBC reported that 2,600 people PER DAY have pocketknives confiscated in airport security.
Are there really that many people who don’t know you can’t take a knife on an airplane anymore?
More than you think. You ought to look up the lists of conficated items sometime. People think they can carry grenades and guns on a plane, too. TSA then sells the legal confiscated items back to the public, via proxy.
My various hobbies include sailing, gardening, woodworking, and ordering far too much crap over the internet that comes in hard-to-open boxes. All of these things require having a knife or two handy. Because of the last hobby on the list, I’ve kind of overdone it, so I have a selection of Spyderco and CRKT knives. The Spyderco knives are quite nice, but expensive. The CRKT knives have cool designs, but the steel is only so-so, however they’re cheap enough so that my heart won’t be broken if one gets dropped overboard or mislaid.
Probably my most useful knife is a Tekna Xtra-Edge – it’s maybe an inch and a half long, but the plastic sheath makes it incredibly accessible. (Unfortunately, the sheath isn’t designed perfectly so the knife will occasionally fall out and get lost, so I’m hoping that they’ll put the knife back into production one of these days so I can stock up on replacements.)
My little keychain Swiss army knife went into a local theme park with me several times after they installed metal detectors. Each time I put my keys in the little basket so I could step through the detector, but no one pointed out the knife. Last time I went the guy did notice the knife and said they would have to confiscate it until the end of the day. I told him I’d been in several times with it and never even thought about it.
As if I could do much with a little 2 or 3 inch blade anyway.
Yes, I always have a small Tiffany sterling-silver pocket knife (the blades and workings are by Victorinox) in my pocket. It was a gift from my wife, and has our wedding date engraved on it. I once forgot I had it with me when I went through airport security in Norfolk, Va. I left the line, went back to a gift shop, bought a greeting card and mailed it home to myself!
Daily since I was 8.
That was a long time ago.
have a buck 110 on the belt I’ve had since the days in the Corps, and the leatherman is in the “briefcase” with the laptop, just because.
Yes, I have one of these on my keyring. It’s small, but very handy.
I also have a Swiss Army Camper model, but I don’t carry it with me on a daily basis.
I’ve carried a knife with me every day since I was probably 6. Not only could I carry one to school I was able to make one in shop class that was probably a foot long. It was made of tool steel, solid brass fittings and a walnut handle.
While I have a collection of various knives I carry a lightweight Spyderco to work. If I’m wearing heavier clothing I carry a SOG flash-1. If I want to carry a larger knife I have a 3 1/2 Benchmade.
Small Victorinox SAK on my car keychain. I like having some basic tools on me, specially in case I have to deal with packaging. Of course, I gotta be continuously remembering to take the other keychain if I have to get on an airplane, I already lost one at Boston airport…
I have a cheapo Swiss Army knockoff I carry around sometimes for ultility, but so far all I’ve needed was the corkscrew. I used to have a nice Leatherman I carried everywhere, but it’s long been misplaced. I liked it so much I gave all the guys in my wedding party engraved Leathermans…or Leathermen, whichever.
I’ve been thinking about getting an Emerson Commander based on the glowing reviews of a guy I know, but they’re pretty pricey.
