Do you ever watch just excerpts of your favorite movies?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this…Sometimes I’ll put in a tape or DVD and fast-forward to a certain scene or part of it that I want to see, without watching all the rest of it.

Ladyhawke: the scene where Philippe nearly escapes from the guards, then is nearly killed, then rescued by Navarre–love the action; and the part where Philippe and Isabeau save the wolf-Navarre from drowning in the ice, as well as the morning aftermath. Very moving.

Ed Wood: The confrontation between Ed and Dolores when she finds out he gave away her part in one of his rotten movies to another gal. Hilarious exchange between Depp and Parker.

Master and Commander: the dinner scene with the “weevils” joke at the end, because I’m a sucker for bad puns.

The Door in the Floor: the whole sequence with Ted running from Mrs. Vaughn while Eddie takes Ruth into town to kill time. Amusing, yet sad.

A Clockwork Orange: the whole opening with the zoom-out from the gang and the start of Alex’s narration. Creepy, creepy.

There are many more, but this thread is for everyone.

I knew a guy who had an entire summer off work and he made a 6 hour video tape of key movie scenes. It was quite cool. Just pop it in and watch some of the best scenes of some of the best movies ever. I doubt it could be done without violating the various copyright protection features of DVDs these day. This was back before DVD had hit the market.

I’m more likely to do this with a movie I catch channel surfing. I’ll keep surfing but kinda time it to where I’ll know when The Scene I Have to Watch™ is coming up. The other day I saw that Cat Ballou was on and like a vampire with the grains of salt I have to see the scene where Lee Marvin as Kid Shelleen goes through a Training Montage™ (as a mariachi band plays) and transforms in about three minutes from a fat, washed up, washed out old drunk in filthy clothes to his slick former dashing polished steel eyed gunfighter self in black leather and studded garters. Then I have to watch the following scene where, as Stubby Kaye & Nat King Cole serenade whores in Wolf City, Shelleen goes to face down his nemesis, Kid Strawn (who you learn is his brother).

No desire to see the whole movie, but I have to watch that scene everytime (and then might as well hang around to see the horse leaning against the building).

Other scenes I have to watch (and have watched on DVD)

The christening scene and the Italian diner (with Turk/Salazzo) in The Godfather

The Shake Ya Ass scene from About a Boy

The “Here… hit Ouiser!” scene from Steel Magnolias (I am so brokeback it’s pitiful sometimes)

Latifah’s number (When You’re Good to Mama) from Chicago

The ending of Rosemary’s Baby

I’ll often put in a movie late at night while I’m reading. I’ll only pay attention when it gets to part that I know I want to see.

So brokeback is our new adjective of choice, eh? I could get used to that.

I like to skip to songs in musicals when I’m in the mood, including but not limited to:

the dance at the gym and “America” in West Side Story
“The Lees of Old Virginia” and “He Plays the Violin” in 1776
“All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango” in Chicago

Of course, I usually end up watching the whole thing anyway because they’re all excellent movies, but those are the starting points.

At first glance I thought that you were saying that you skipped past those songs and I was aghast. Those, along with “Cool, Cool, Considerate Men” are my favorite places to make a quick jump to in that movie.

I also love to jump to the last scene in The Lion in Winter, “You know, I hope we never die!”, and the scene in A Man for All Seasons where Thomas More and William Roper are arguing about giving the benefit of law to the wicked, “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?”

Whenever My Cousin Vinnie comes on I have to watch all of Marisa Tomei’s scenes again. I can take or leave the rest of the movie.

The final big number from Moulin Rouge
The performance of “Romeo and Juliet” from Shakespeare in Love
The various musical numbers from Can’t Stop the Music
Miss Coco Peru’s Big Scene from Trick
The party scene from Parting Glances
The scenes featuring the porn star I used to sleep with from his various movies

I’ll pop in Heat for the first robbery.

There was a scene with the final fight of Elle’s brother Dias in the Shadow Skill TV series that I’d throw in just to watch.

Watching Twin Peaks I’ll fast-forward through a lot of stuff to keep on the particular subplots that I enjoy more.

**Contact ** during the first contact scene. “Hey, is anybody awake in there!?”

After a particularly frustrating night at my last and only Real Job, I used to come home, pop Tootsie in the VCR, and jump to the scene where Michael is arguing with his agent about not being sent up for parts. I really identified with his frustration.

“They can’t all be idiots, Michael – you argue with EVERYBODY!”

Yes they can. Oh yes indeedio.

The Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken scene in True Romance followed by Patricia Arquette smashing hell out of the pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini.

i usually play the battlemech transformation sequence (“Arsenals unleashed”) sequence in The Iron Giant whenever the bloody frakking phone rings at work, it’s what goes on in my head every time the sodding thing rings, i hate phones…

i typically only watch Rose McGowan’s “Kitty” scenes in the thouroughly worthless waste of celluloid Monkeybone, hate the movie, hate Brendan Frasier, Rose’s Kitty scenes are the only things worth watching, were i to re-edit that film i’d cut everything except scenes involving Kitty

i jump straight to the “Area 52” sequence in “Looney Tunes, Back In Action”, just for the Marvin the Martian and Dalek scenes

i generally skip to the "this is pure SNOW scene in Better Off Dead

The finale in Pacino’s Scarface, starting around the time they show him dumping his face into the moutain of coke on his desk.

The Gutterballs sequence in The Big Lebowski, as well as the sequence where he’s chasing the flying carpet/being run over by the bowling ball.

In Once Upon a Time In Mexico, I’ll watch “Well traveled” story sequence, the “Pistolero” gunfight sequence, the hotel escape (gotta love a woman who swears in Spanish), and the entire Dia De Los Muertos segment starting from Sands paying Chicleta Boy to be his guide.

If I ever watch Desperado, it’s almost entirely for Buscemi’s “Biggest Fucking Mexican” sequence, though the entire movie is highly entertaining (proof that with enough style, substance is irrelevant :D)

For El Mariachi, it’s the bathtub mariachi song “I have been caught with my pants down! And soon there might be a castration!”

I’ll load up Star Wars Episode III for the opening battle sequence (oh lordy I LOVE that first shot with the fighters flying over the star cruiser, then revealing the space battle going on below).

I love watching the big battle from the end of the BSG miniseries “Prepare for Defensive Supression Barrage!”

I’ll load up episodes of Due South to watch particular action sequences (the bus depot fight in “The Deal” and the car chase in “Heaven and Earth”, in particular)

I’ll load up Serenity just for the very final fight sequences (those who have seen it know EXACTLY what I’m talking about)

In the movie Shock Treatment (the little-known sequel to Rocky Horror Picture Show) I’ll fire up “Dealing with an Ace”, “Naughty Night”, “Little Black Dress”, “Shock Treatment”, “Duel Duet”, and “Just Gotta Keep Going”. Needless to say, I basically skip the non-singy parts and a handful of the songs themselves.

In Batman Begins I’ll watch it basically for the scenes involving Ra’s Al Ghul.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ At Heaven’s Door: I’ll watch this basically for the convenience store fight and the fight ontop of the radio tower. I love the song that plays there.

Equilibrium: I’ll basically watch the last fight sequence “I pay it gladly.”

Firebirds: I like to watch the mock dogfight between Preston and Little, and then the whole battle sequence at the end.

Newsies: I like to watch the opening sequence and “King of New York”. Bill Pullman is such an underrated actor.

Reefer Madness The Musical: I like to watch this movie for “Reefer Madness”, “Listen to Jesus Jimmy”, the Brownie Song, “Sally Sunshine”, and the whole song and dance number at the end.

Sometimes I’ll fire up my Horatio Hornblower DVDs just for the battle sequences.

One of my high school buddies used his dad’s video editing equipment to re-cut Titanic into the nude scene, the guy falling off the back of the boat and hitting the propeller, and the frozen-stiff Jack falling off into the depths. It became three hours of nothing but that, and he liked it better that way.

I have re-watched several times the section of FOTR from the Chamber of Marzabul to Lorien. Also the Battle of Pelennor Field in ROTK.

Not scenes as such but I’ll often watch only The Hard Goodbye sections of Sin City.

As a region 2 customer I’m hoping for the extended DVD (to be released later in the year) here to have more Rourke action.

I have seen Ben Hur so many times I can sense when the chariot scene is on.Sometimes, I watch the the blood of Christ mix with the rain and cure Ben’s mother and sister if I need a manly cry.
The funniest Jerry Lewis is the last 5 minutes of Rockabye Baby when he is on tv playing with a rock and roll band
