He does (speaking from personal experience). “Oh we want fries with dinner tonight?”. Reaches into freezer …
I finished up a lot of uneaten crinkle-cut fries when my kids were little. Kids’ meals in restaurants always come with the crinkle-cut style fry; it’s like a law or something. Is it just me, or do crinkle-cut fries have a particular bland cardboard-like taste that no other fry has? It may have to do with the overall low quality of the type of frozen fries that crinkle-cuts typically are, but it seems like the same brand and quality of straight-cut frozen fry will taste marginally better.
The only thing I can think of that would cause the cut shape to affect the flavor would be the higher crispy surface area to fry, but I would think that would make the crinkle-cuts taste better, not worse.
A crinkle-cut fry killed my father. They should all go back where they came from.
Yes, more!
They could be worse:
I’m firmly in the tater tot group.
God. I’m hungry
This is why we get on so well.
Crinkle cut fries are totally unacceptable to me, mostly due to my association with the frozen ones you’d make at home and partly because they generally come out crunchy and I don’t like that. And since the fries are as crucial as the main entree, that eliminates the restaurants that serve them(I’m looking at you, Culvers). Same with waffle fries; they can both feck off.
I store all my potatoes together in a cool, dark place for long periods of time. But so far, no tater tots yet. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Try adding soft music and candles.
Thanks for the tip, will try that!
Some of them seem to be growing limbs. I think they’re trying to escape.
Lawful Evil and Neutral Evil are always – always – too greasy. I’ve never had any that were not. (Not a fan of the Chaotic Good, either.)
Me either. They’re nearly always mealy and surprisingly less potato-y than other cuts. I don’t like crinkle cut as well for all the reasons mentioned above.
When I order delivery I try to find alternatives to fries as a side, because they never arrive hot enough.
Since I try to avoid carbs, I substitute a salad for the fries.
That’s what I usually pick.
I learned about hotdish here and have made it twice. It has tater tots in it and is wonderfully comforting.
I am the exact same way. Never order fries for delivery.
Only one type of sort of crinkle-cut I like - Nathan’s. From the restaurant- I’ve never had the frozen ones sold in supermarkets.
The shape is one aspect. I don’t like crunchy fries. I prefer those that are paler, and only crispy for the first couple of minues. My ratings are:
- British chips
- American steak fries (à la Red Robin)
- Crinkle-cut, if not overcooked
- shoestring (à la McDonald’s), if not overcooked
- anything else
…
- those horrible pre-coated fries (à la Burger King)

Did not read the entire thread …
ISTM that most places the serve crinkle-cut undercook them so they’re still soggy. In that they are worse than other varieties. Cooked throroughly, they’re no different than thin-cut straight, steak, etc., style.
The fries I like least are the increasingly common ones where they seem almost breaded. There’s an underlying solid hunk of partly-crispy potato and a thin partial coating of fried crispy something. I think they’re coated in potato starch. Do NOT like at all.
Fries are already a fat and glycemic death bomb. Adding the starch (or whatever) coating makes them about as glycemic as pure sugar, and also provides an extra carrier for more fry grease. I can sure see why the USA typical 150lb overweight Wal*Mart shopper would love those. Not me.
