Mayo goes on the bottom bun only. It acts as a grease barrier to keep the juices from destroying the structural integrity of the bottom bun.
Learned that one from Alton Brown.

I’m going to single handedly put this topic into the pit with my next statement:
Yes I do except I’m counting Miracle Whip as Mayonnaise for purposes of this topic.
Mustard on top, Miracle Whip on bottom. As a kid we used something called Big H Burger Sauce. Man I loved that stuff.
No. Mayo is a necessary evil on some sandwiches, but not a burger.
My preference would be guac. And I love mushrooms. And I would not so no to bacon.
But not mayo on a burger. It’s just wrong in so many ways…
Lord, no. I have to stifle a gag reflex if I have a bite of a burger with it.
If you are, “It’s doesn’t matter”, “Leery” or even “Hate” mayonnaise on a burger do not, I repeat DO NOT get the “Angus Deluxe” from Mcdonalds.
It is a Mayo sandwich with additions of Beef, Tomato, Lettuce, Pickle and Onion.
No where does it state that Mayo is slathered all over it…
It was gross…no ketchup or mustard anywhere, it was all MAYO.
That is definitely a burger that is heavy on the mayo. I like mayo on burgers and I have to scrape a lot of it off the bun when I get that burger.
Love me a burger with spicy mustard, veggies, and mayo! As big a fan as I am of Sriyonnaise, though, I don’t think it belongs on a burger. Plain mayo enhances the beef’s flavor, whereas Sriyonnaise waves its arms around and shouts, “Hey, lookit me! LOOKIT ME!”
I don’t take mayo on anything ever. The stuff frankly disgusts me. No offense to those who enjoy it, you’re welcome to take my share.
