I make my bed every morning. It takes about a minute, it looks nicer, and it makes it more pleasant to get back into, so why wouldn’t I?
And I’m sure someone will be quick to tell me how wrong I am, but for me it’s one of those things that indicates a person’s housekeeping ethos. If you can’t take a minute each day to make the bed, I’m not touching anything that came from your kitchen.
My bedroom is the size of a large walk-in closet, so making the bed is extremely difficult (it’s walled in on three sides). Given the fact that I rarely sleep in it, I don’t make it. When people come over, I close the door. I HATE MY BEDROOM. I HATE MY BED.
Even if I’m late I still make the bed but I only have a sheet, duvet and afghan to worry about. I think the fact that it’s so easy to make the bed is the reason I’d feel like I’d hit bottom if I failed to make it. Especially when life’s hectic, coming home to the bed that’s still messy from the night before makes me feel like I’ve descended into chaos.
Agreed. I’m also one of those people who can’t study when there’s a mess (too distracting), so if for some reason I didn’t have time to make it in the morning, I’ll do it before I hit the books.
Husband rips out the sheets at the bottom and always has the comforter all wonky and his pillows all over - so I make sure MY half has the sheets tucked in, straight, and the comforter nicely over everything - and my pillows pre-fluffed.
He wants to sleep like a barbarian what do I care?
I don’t make my bed. And my kitchen is clean - it’s the cleanest room in the house.
Honestly, no one sees my bedroom but me and my SO 90% of the time. Especially now that it’s upstairs…when people come to my house they usually hang out downstairs.
And I am also one who just has a fitted sheet and a comforter. I see no reason to go through all that mess with extra sheets and stuff, they are not comfortable. And if I tuck anything in at the foot of the bed I’d be untucking it every night because I have to sleep with my feet out of the blankets in all weather.
I’m just going to mess it up again in 15-16 hours. Every day. It makes no sense to me. But I have no animals that can roam and get into the bed, it’s just me and the SO.
That’s mostly why I make my bed. I don’t do a lot, just draw up the sheets, quilt, and duvet and arrange the pillow shams over my sleeping pillow. I wanna keep all the kitty dirt and fur outta my sheets. (and, as a bonus, it does make my bedroom look nicer)
I don’t make my bed until night time. If I make it in the morning, it’s inevitable that one of the kids will want to watch TV in my room or some such (EtherealFreakOfPinkness has a TV and DVD player in her room, but insists that my bed is more comfortable). If it’s the weekend, hubby’s up there on and off all day watching stuff he’s DVR’d during the week. So, if I make it in the morning, it’s unmade by some point in the afternoon. But I like getting into a made bed, so I make it in the evening.
I have a duvet, so yes - it’s just a case of throwing the corner back where it’s meant to go after I’ve got up. My wife has a way of making it look flat and even, but that’s a Feminine Mystery Skill I cannot fathom.
Wow, that’s a little extreme. Good thing I don’t let people into my bedroom when they come over.
Seriously, though, I “make” my bed by flinging the sheets and covers back up over the pillows. No fancy tucking and creasing. But my home is clean. Tidy, maybe not so much, but clean.
I make it most mornings. I don’t like having the sheets and blankets all over the place, so fixing it in the morning makes it more comfortable at nice. Also, my room is visible from the front entryway of the house, so if someone comes in and looks down the hall, I certainly don’t want them to see a messy bed.
It’s a recent addition to my repertoire, but yeah. It’s fast and easy (a matter of putting two pillows back in place and smoothing out the duvet, or sheet and blanket – there’s no spread or anything), and it makes the room look orderly, which is nice to come home to.
I have this problem with my husband. It’s about a million times faster to make a bed if you have 2 people doing it. When I can get him to help me (he’s good about doing stuff around the house, but is one of those people who thinks it’s pointless to make the bed), he doesn’t TUG on the sheets & spread to make them smooth. Drives me crazy…I have to tell him…PULL on it! If I don’t, the two sides look totally different.
Ha ha! Never though of that…and we DO live in an attached house. Dang. Oh well…they’ll just think we have much MUCH more exciting mornings than we typically do.
Always always made my bed first thing, including putting all the pillows in place that my husband hates. Try to do a fast vacuum too before I go downstairs. I have a little Dirt Devil power sweeper upstairs for the bedroom so I don’t have to lug big burtha up the steps.
Wow. Good thing you’re never one of my houseguests.
My room is utterly messy. It’s the one part of the house that I don’t mind being messy, because it’s mine. We keep the door closed and basically no one goes in there except my husband and I. The bedroom is where we keep all of the extra cords in the house, all of the dirty clothes, etc. The bed has been made once in the entire six-eight months I’ve lived here, and that was when we first moved in. Even now, when I change the sheets or wash the comforter, I just toss everything back on. It doesn’t really matter, because that’s the mess room.
The bathroom and kitchen? Spotless. I’m anal about those. I can’t stand having a dirty kitchen, it squicks me out to no end. I clean with bleach just to make sure. I’m that weird.
My mom is the same way. Probably learned behavior - anything that’s got tile or porcelain needs to be clean and sterile. Anything with carpet doesn’t matter quite as much. I just shampoo it every few months then.
