My morning method of selecting underwear is usally, “open drawer, grab whatever is clean”. However, during my dating days, if I had a date, I’d select one of my few pair of “dating boxers”. They were newer, nicer, colored boxers rather than my usual tighty-whitey… you know… just in case the date went really well.
I just saw a woman go by downstairs wearing a satin blouse and the lace pattern of her bra was visible against the satin. Intentional or would something seamless work better?
Anyway, the question came up in my brain, “Do you have set of rules by which you select your underwear?”
Not always, but sometimes. I’m female. Certain days of the month, I prefer NOT to wear my newest, nicest, whitest panties. And I often give some thought to which bra to wear based on how much support it supplies and how comfortable it is. Which is why I’ve got the particular bra on today that I do–it’s laundry day and this one is just obnoxious. It looks ok, but it annoys me.
Absolutely chosen, most of the time. There are the stained granny whites for that time of the month, the “date” underwear, as you mention, the “slimwear” for tight outfits, and then the whole issue of waistband height - jeans now come in such a variety of “waist” heights, I have to make sure my underwear isn’t too high for whatever pair of pants I’m wearing that day.
In the summer, I often avoid the whole issue by just not wearing any, to be honest. The hippie skirt wardrobe really makes them optional.
Bras are a whole 'nother dithering mess. I used to spend way too much time matching the bra to the outfit (high and round or low and minimized or divide and conquer or…) Now I just pretty much wear the same two bras all the time (which are a nice compromise: mostly high and round, with moderate divide and conquer properties, and a molded cup with no seams) which makes that decision much easier. Did your neighbor make a conscious choice? I’m not sure, but it’s possible. Bras are no longer meant to be entirely hidden and secret - there are plenty of trendy styles which include a peek at the shape, color or texture of the bra. She could have been going for one of those looks, or she might be entirely clueless of the effect.
There’s a REASON it takes us so long to get dressed. We’re really not trying to make you late, I promise!
Male. I take what’s on top of the pile, but I cycle the pile so that all underwear is worn equally - fresh laundry goes on the bottom of the pile. Except for the 2 emergency pairs in the back of the drawer which only get worn if there’s a delay in laundry processing. Whenever a pair gets to an unwearable state, it’s compared against the emergency pairs, and the worst pair gets thrown out, and a new pair comes out of the package on the shelf.
Thankfully for everyone, underwear is pretty much the only trivial thing I put this much effort into.
Absolutely. Except for me the thought process is, will wearing this without underwear be a bad thing? If the answer to that question is yes, then I grab a pair.
I have an order of preference, my looser fitting boxers over my tighter boxers, any boxers over briefs. Once I’m down to briefs I seriously need to do laundry.
I’m a straight guy but I try to wear underwear that matches my shirt and socks. For example I’m wearing a gray polo shirt, gray boxer briefs, and gray socks today. If I’m wearing a louder colored shirt (eg. red or yellow) and I don’t have a matching pair of socks or underwear I will try to wear a neutral color. I do, however, have many colors of underwear so I’m probably only wearing neutral colored socks. For some reason I can find underwear in almost any color, but that is not necessarily the case with socks.
I also wanted to mention that this really doesn’t take that long, but I often lay out my work clothes the evening before. If I’m just staying at home, then I stick to shorts and t-shirts. But even then the underwear usually match either my shirt or my shorts.
I tend not to own grubby or ripped underwear. (OK, I do, but I only wear it as a last resort.) Everything I wear is pretty nice, and they all have fun patterns.
I tend to select whatever matches my mood. If I have a date, I wear something that will amuse her as well. If I want her to eat me after dinner, I’ll wear chocolates. If I want her to eat me for breakfast, I’ll wear Tony the Tiger. If I want her to eat me on Martha’s Vineyard, I’ll wear Black Dog.
Yes, I have some I save for that time of the month, and I have others that shouldn’t be worn with a pair of low-rise jeans.
As for bras, I have the ones that fit and the ones that don’t fit quite as well. If I’m wearing light colored clothing, I pick the beige or white ones, and of course, black with black.
I usually wear my Christmas-themed undies and the least favorites first. That way, I get them out of the way and don’t end up “having” to wear them as laundry day approaches. I do have nicer ones or ones that are for close-fitting garments that I “save” for the right occasion (damn, I can never remember how to spell that…and I’m an excellent speller!)
You know, if you’d bother to put on some pants, you wouldn’t have to match your underwear to your shirts and socks.
I usually put thought into what underwear I put on. As the other ladies have mentioned, there are certain underpants for that time of the month. Mine are pretty much all cotton briefs/bikinis so usually my decision is made based on color, as in “Will these show through my pants?” So obviously if I’m wearing light-colored pants/shorts/skirt I’m going to wear nude or light-colored panties. Black/dark panties with black pants. If I’m wearing jeans, anything goes. I am kind of weird in that I have what I consider to be my “comfy panties.” These the ones I put on when I’m feeling snuggly and want to chill on the couch. These are almost always gray, which isn’t surprising because gray is a color I associate with comfort. And now you all know way too much about my underpants.
Ah yes, bras. Black with black, nude/tan with white, and white with everything else.
Well, thanks to a hysterectomy the end of February, I was able to toss all of my “that time of month” undies! Yay!
Otherwise, yes, I do consider it (although like a poster upthread, I lay my clothes out, undies included, the night before). If I’m wearing pants or a skirt that fit close to the body, I have a few pairs of panties that don’t show panty lines. With casual tops, I always wear my sports bras that are oh-so-comfy and I love them. But I have a few shirts that absolutely require my WonderBra.
And of course, I have specific undies for when I’m anticipating a romantic evening. . .
I did something really liberating a few months ago and threw out all the underwear I don’t like to wear, and bought a bunch of new underwear that I do.
Ever since I got the Diva Cup the time of the month has never been a problem.
I have never dated anyone who has ever expressed the remotest preference among different types of underwear I might wear.
All my underwear is low enough to go under my lowest-waist jeans.
So no, I don’t notice which pair of underwear I put on.
Bras … well, I do have one that makes the girls rather a lot more … er, pronounced, so I am particular about where I wear that one (and where I don’t). And there’s the whole colour-matching thing. But other than that I don’t care.
